CornHunka
A group of us are going to take a week and fish the Missouri River starting at Pierre SD and head south. I've fished many parts of the river from Pickstown up to Platte and I've fished above the dam in Oahe, but not much below. Anyone have any experience below the dam and Pierre and any recommendations on where we should stay (looking mostly at motels, we are looking to fish, not camp). Quote Link to comment
95huskers
My brother lives in Pierre and i go up there 4 times a year. I talked to him the other day and the fish have been biting well below the damn. Alot of times under the bridges has been good floating down in the current or from there all the way down to the first bend in the river. There is a place about 45 mins from Pierre that is really good to. North Bend Rec area. Not to many big fish but a lot of walleye and really nice size smallies. Right around 15-18 inches. There are many underwater "knolls" out there and usually can catch them in 8-12 feet of water around those. Those areas have been the best for me. But just ask the locals when you get there and they will know where people have been catching fish. you best bet for lodging is in Pierre. Plenty of motels there Quote Link to comment
husker_hurdler
I drove through Pierre for work on Tuesday, and saw a TON of boats out on river right below the dam. Most have been 60-80 boats in a part of the river the size of a football field. Suggestion: go and try the new resturant in town: Redrossa Quote Link to comment

T_O_Bull
Have always had good luck in Chamberlain and you don't have to go all the way to Pierre which is a place I liken to BF Egypt. T_O_B Quote Link to comment

95huskers
Hey 95, any report or pictures??? I fished up on Oahe lake Friday. We went out to Bush Landing and we caught our limit in no time. The fish are biting really well. The issue is they are all pretty skinny. We caught a ton of 13-16 inchers. we caught a couple 17-19 inchers. Saturday we went to West Bend or Big Bend recreational area and again about the same thing. a ton of little ones but we ended up catching out limit quickly and just upgrading all day. Sunday we went back up to Bush landing and had some good luck. Caught some northern and a few smallies. I had a monster smallie on and one of the guys was netting it knocked it off. The last day Monday, we went up the Cheyenne River and pulled plugs down the river. The wind was pretty fierce outta the west so that made it easier to go down river. We ended up catching our limit with much fatter fish. more of them were 16-19 inches and caught 3 over 22 inches. All of these fish were much healthier and fatter. The fishing was great and the beer went down smooth. the weather could have been better but it wasnt horrible. a little wind never hurts anything. Here is a pic of the 2 my buddy caught. His first time Walleye fishing: Quote Link to comment
beanman
My father-in-law keeps hounding me about going to Oahe and unfortunately I won't be able to do it for at least a month. Is it worth going to in late July or August or does the fishing slow down quite a bit from earlier in the year? Better to fish Oahe or south of Pierre? I have never fished that area so am totally clueless so any help would be appreciated. The only "river" fishing I've done for Walleye has been a big river system in Ontario so recommendations on bait and presentations would also be appreciated. Quote Link to comment
