Big12 opponent series 1: Kansas

Recommended Posts

:restore2 Hey, I give KU credit for beating NU this year... congrats and congrats on the bowl win....

BUT..... the time has not come when KU just "reloads" instead of "rebuilds".

My goodness, they haven't stockpiled a ton of talent . They may be better than your average KU team of the past, but they will definately will not be as strong on D as this year, and without Gordon, they also lose a top "go-to" guy on offense.

Welcome to Memorial Stadium KU.... and welcome to a start to another tremendoulsy long losing streak to the mighty Big Red. :restore2

All Big 12 DE John McCoy is back from Iraq and will be in spring drills and is already working out with the team.

Also All Big 12 safety Rodney Harris is back after taking a season off for family issues. He also will be in for spring drills.

Had a chance to check with some KU fans about whether in fact both those players are returning and indeed Mangino confirmed Monday night that both players would be part of spring camp.

As far as All Big12 for McCoy, that info is not accurate. He hasn't played for KU the last 2 seasons because he was deployed, so not sure where you got All Big12 from. He only has 1 year of eligibility remaining and also isn't completly in shape, so he has to get back into shape. We will get a better understanding of where he stands once KU conducts its spring game. In the meantime, i am not that worried about a guy who hasn't played in 2 years. When he last played in 2003, he only had 11 tackles and 1 sack.

As far as Free Safety Rodney Harris is concerned, he missed 2005 because he went back home for personal reasons, after playing in 2004 and having 62 tackles and 4 interceptions. Again, he has only 1 season of eligibility remaining and i am not sure he will be playing much this season because of the inexperience KU will have at the FS spot. KU will likely build for the future, so in my opinion, he will most likely come out as a backup to Raymond Brown while KU lets their Sophmore to be gain experience.

PART 2:

Kansas undoubtedly improved its offense in the last 5 games winning 4 of the last 5 against Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa St and Houston in the Fort Worth bowl, and the lone loss coming to 2005 National champs Texas in Austin 66-14. Kansas ran 391 passing plays, and 413 running plays showing it was balanced both running and passing the ball. Kansas runs different formations. They run a spread most of the time, a Power-I, a Split back and a Pro set.

Quarterback: Adam Barman: 3V

Kansas will lose Juco QB starter Jason Swanson who completed 55.3% of his pass (105 for 190) and threw for 1305 yards, 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. KU will also lose the services of 3 year off and on starter Brian Luke who completed 50.9 of his passes this year (87 for 170) for 885 yards, 6 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. KU will return Junior Adam Barman who has extensive playing time but saw a limited role this season as a QB throwing for 118 yards on 16 of 30 attempts (53.3%) 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception. All 3 QB's this season have each thrown more interceptions then touchdowns. Adam Barman who was the starter on offense in 2003 completed 53.8% of his passes (141 of 262), 11 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He is 214 for 377 (56.8%) for 2,110 yards, 15 touchdowns and 15 interceptions during his career at KU. Suffice to say, KU will have an experienced QB next season.

Running Back: John Cornish 2V

KU will lose 3 year starter Clark Green who rushed for 664 yards this season on 153 carries and 2 touchdowns. His role diminished somewhat towards the end of the season behind Junior John Cornish who rushed for 780 yards in 134 carries for 9 touchdowns. Cornish is similar to Cory Ross this year and presents a problem rushing and catching the ball as a back. He had 16 catches for 150 yards this season and 2 receiving touchdowns. Again, KU will have some experience at this position. Backing Cornish up will likely be delegated to Junior to be Brandon McAnderson who rushed for 102 yards on 22 carries and 1 touchdown. Backing them up will be the duties of Sophomores Gary Green and Tang Bacheyie

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends:

Kansas will lose 2 starters in the WR corp in starters Charles Gordon and Mark Simmons (98 catches for 944 yards combined) in addition to backup Greg Heaggans. Returning experience includes starting Sophomore Marcus Herford (7 catches for 64 yards) and Senior backup Brian Murph (33 for 368 yards). The other lone returning starter is Junior Marcus Henry (17 for 183) and his likely backup will be Jeff Foster (4 for 70 yards). KU will return some experience but will also lose some. If KU's WR's can continue to catch passes and open up holes for Cornish, the Jayhawks might have a successful season.

Offensive Line:

Kansas willl return it's entire offensive line, from starting Offensive tackles Jr. Ceaser Rodriquez (1V), Fr. Anthony Collins (RS) and offensive guards Senior Bob Whitaker (2V), and Fr. Ryan Cantrell (RS) in addition to center Jr. David Ocha (2V). KU however does lose a Senior in backup Matt Thompson. KU still has a young offensive line and they were pushed around alot last year and teams got pressure on the QB and had KU done a better job of protecting it's QB's, they would have won more games. That's something Mangino will surely address during the offseason and look for ways to improve his unit.

Special Teams: KU will return kickoff specialist Scott Webb, Punter Kyle Tucker but must find replacements for kickoff returns player Greg Heaggans and punt returns player Charles Gordon.

KU 2006 should be a better version offensively then they were in 2005 and with the experience they return on offense, they could become the first Kansas team to challange for the Big12 north this season.

IMO, KU is the sleeper team of the north. If their defense is as strong as last season and their offense continues to improve, they could win in Lincoln next season. AGAIN, JMO. ;)

One thing is for sure, their offense will have to carry their defense next season.- With only 3 starters returning and a new DC after the old one left, those reuturning starters in my opinion will get moved around. We should have a fairly decent idea of how KU's defense will look. I expect to see a few JUCO's from this year recruiting in the mix. I will update this thread once KU concludes its spring game.

I dunno, Mangino's got something going there in KU. That's why they are my "upset special" for 2006. No one gives them a chance against NU in Lincoln. ;)

IMO what he had going for ku is leaving this year...which was the good D players.

You are right. He's losing lots of D talent but they found an offense by season's end that was pretty darn good. They didn't beat Nu with just their D. If they looked good on paper, it wouldn't be an upset. We'll see what he can field. JMO :cheers

I think if he somehow pulls out a decent. winning season than he will prove to many to be a pretty darn good coach...that is one big task to do and I would be very impressed...only known offensive weapon for them that I know of right now is Cornish...

Disnt KU beat ISU also when ISU had a chance to go to the title game?

Yes, but you digress. ISU chokes when the north title is on the line. What does ISU/KU have to do with the 2006 NU/KU game?

More relevant is the fact that KU beat NU (badly) for the first time in 40 years (40-15?) and have cleared that mental hurdle. KU went undefeated at home for the first time in.... a long time! They finished strong and carry a lot of momentum into next season. They lose almost all their defensive starters but Mangino has them believing they can win. :)

They aren't your daddy's KU anymore. I think everyone is overlooking them.
