"It's a problem to lock people up for 10 and 15 and 20 years for youthful mistakes," Paul said. He went on to point out that racial minorities are particularly unfairly treated by the system:

Wow! I have to admit I am a bit surprised by these comments but also have to agree. It seems as though people such as Nikko Jenkins end up getting multiple chances for really bad crimes and knowingly let him out when he is documented as a crazy, and then ends up Murdering multiple people for absolutely no reason. But, hey Jack down the street got busted with just over an ounce of Mary jane so why not lock him up for Ten.

Yep. It's an issue that would be a lot easier to address if demagoguing it with "soft on crime!" wasn't so simple and appealing.
