  1. I read most, but not all, of the posts. My opinion (take it or leave it, everyone's independent choice), it's not about what you want; it's about what's good for the school and the betterment of the whole. As time passes, day by day, people will forget that Nebraska was even ever in the Big 12 until they look it up on Wikipedia in umpteen years (that's true, people forget legacy). The world does not revolve around what you want to happen because it will make you feel good for the finite time you have on this planet. There was a time when Ohio State wasn't in the B1G; there was a time when Michigan beat Ohio State terribly for many, many years in a row. It's never what's good for you, its what's good for your school and if you don't believe this place is ultimately better for your school, I disagree.
  2. I thought the same thing when I saw it, but one of my degen gambler friends corrected me. Its volume and only being slightly better than a coin flip to be considered a good sports gambler (essentially, 57% is killing it). See below (his text to me when I brought up the same issue): It’s vig and volume related. Risk $110 to win $100 standard Now do that 10000 times a year so risk $1,100,000 to win $1,000,000. If you win 50% of those still lose $50,000 Now do that 10000 times a year so risk $1,100,000 to win $1,000,000. If you win 55% of those win $55,000 Now do that 10000 times a year so risk $1,100,000 to win $1,000,000. If you win 60% of those win $160,000 Now win 55% risking $1,100 to win $1,000 every play and you clear $550,000 a year. Not bad for airing on your couch drinking beer Hitting 52.38% winnings is essentially your break-even point at 10% juice. So that shows the power of the vig. Always try to save and find a lower juice as it’s is worth a ton of “real” money Same scenarios from above but w 5% 50/50 win net -$25,000 (vs -50k) 55/45 win net $77,500 (vs 55k) 60/40 win net $180,000 (vs 160k) 55/45 win (1k per game) net $775,00 (vs 550k) Breakeven at 5% is 51.2%
  3. Wow. This interview must have occurred at a bar in O'hare after a few beers. That is brute honesty.
  4. I concur. Think about how some of the other trophies were originated. Many of them were silly student-created items to make the outcome a little more fun way back in the day. Broken Chair could be that same thing in 25-50 years (whatever timeframe). The origin story of the Illibuck and other trophies are weird and fun. Why kill off something like an obscure trophy?
  5. It's obviously tongue in cheek "journalism" if anything. The guy provides tons of disclaimers about the accuracy prior to presenting the data. They do it as a goof each year in the offseason for content (as college football fans want content in the offseason even though there is very little to discuss). It's not meant to actually drive the conversation on the issue (not that you were saying it was). I usually think of "junk journalism" as something someone prints to persuade the public when the information is clearly suspect. Here, they are just having some fun and it's clearly that.
  6. Not to be argumentative, but it does make sense when analyzed against what they were trying to do. When Nebraska came into the league, the B1G had another blue blood and they wanted as many of these blue blood against blue blood games they could get a year. Nebraska against tOSU, or Michigan, or PSU is good football and good tv. Remember, tOSU had to play Nebraska the same amount of times Nebraska had to play us. When the B1G brought Nebraska in, they fully thought they'd continue their blue blood ways. I am confident that the B1G did not schedule it this way to try to punish Nebraska, it was an attempt to get a good stock of games for the season (and yes, I realize the Nebraska that came in was not the same Nebraska from the 90's, but the B1G still viewed it as a blue blood--and still does).
  7. Common misconception, but there is no revenue to split in the old CIC/Big Ten Academic Whatever It's Called now. That is a different animal altogether (more about cost savings and shared resources e.g., academic courses, library resources, and overhead (maybe some research collaboration), etc.).
  8. guys; may i speak from the forefront a bit, if I may be so bold. You are about to make a windfall financially; you are in the most stable conference in the country because you were desired; the future is bright for you as an institution (on account of being part of B1G, and then some); and you are still a blue blood in football. Do some things need rearranging; of course. There will be a time in the future that OSU needs a pick me up from the rest of the league, today is not that day, but the day is coming. Be content that in this league, we work toward the betterment of each member. Always have, always will.
  9. I think one of the things to keep in mind is that Thad Matta had only one non 20 win season (which was this past season) the whole time he was at OSU. Meanwhile, McD has had 11 non 20 win seasons (don't quote me on those numbers; what I was told. hah). There is a reason people get up in arms. Hell, remember when Riley was announced coach at Nebraska; you guys were up in arms about bringing in a subpar coach.
  10. To add in from the same article. I know some believe that tOSU and Michigan get special treatment b/c what Nebraska dealt with Texas, but... "Alvarez points out that when the Big Ten initially split into divisions, he was unhappy with Wisconsin's placement, "but I accepted that, because it was best for our league." You never hear Ohio State or Michigan demand a bigger cut of TV revenue just because they are the league's two biggest TV draws. The Buckeyes' Smith says, "We don't want that. We want Pat Fitzgerald, who is one of the best coaches in this country, to have the resources to stay relevant." Smith says if Ohio State had asked for more TV money, "we would have fragmented the league." We know this is true because it is exactly what happened to the Big 12. Texas was not content being the Big 12's premier program. Texas wanted to effectively run the league, have its own independent TV channel (the Longhorn Network) and cut the largest piece of pie for itself. In doing that, Texas ignored the old business maxim: Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered." I'll just leave this here
  11. It is my opinion that this is how all good trophies in the BiG have been created. No, not by petition, but rather because students made it happen. All these old trophies (insert them all bucket, turtle, axe, etc. ) were not created by the schools or conference; they were created by students of two schools getting together and making up a trophy. I love it. You don't need a petition; just keep it going between student groups and it will become one. Edit: and why? because it's fun; that's what college football is supposed to be about
  12. If I recall correctly, other schools could have opted out if they wanted. Michigan did completely, PSU said it would occasionally host on a Friday after Thanksgiving, and OSU said it would host a home game if the Friday falls on fall break. From what I have read, Nebraska's administration could have said thanks, but no thanks too, but agreed to jump in. As for the other schools, it's likely good exposure. Edit: Michigan is the only school that said no. I have not read anywhere that the Big Ten said certain schools get to opt out and others don't; the schools participating agreed to do so (which is every school but Michigan). USA Today story about different schools making different choices for participation (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/bigten/2016/11/02/jim-delany-big-ten-football-conference-friday-games-tv-contract/93179790/). I understand you guys still have some bad taste in your mouth from the Big 12, but I don't recall the Big Ten ever carving out exceptions for certain schools in the past (may have happened, but I don't remember any).
  13. I'm obviously not a husker guy, but I don't think Urban is trying to do anything but win a game. It's the first half; you have to put a foot on the throat if you can early. TO would make sure he had the game away in the first half if he could too; do you guys forget the domination in offense those teams had in the mid 90s and how many points they scored in the first half of games? The Husker fans from those times know Urban is not doing anything but playing football; he has no intention of making Nebraska look bad.
  14. like i said, you'll have chances (reference to wilson punt fumbe)
  15. If you live in Cleveland, I think the word you're looking for is masochist, not pessimist. touche
