  1. ... is arrogance. I know people may think he's nice and all the other great adjectives used to describe him (all of which are probably true), but if you look back since the beginning of his tenure, that arrogance has always been present. a few: The arrogance to think he could come here with some of the staff he came with, even with their past failures, instead of going for people who could really help out. the arrogance to think that they didn't need to manage the clock against teams (seen it against byu, usa, and now illinois) the arrogance to think that they don't need to help out the pass defense "because they want the db's to learn" the arrogance to think that they could just call pass plays as they did today instead of going with the run in the kind of weather they found themselves in the arrogance to think they don't need to rotate o-linemen the arrogance to think they don't need to seriously consider some of the concerns of the fan base (they know what they are). many more, but i'll stop there. basically, humility is lacking among the members of the staff. and it is costing them games.
  2. How about having the center, two guards, two tackles, and one or two tight ends plus a fullback take care of the pass blocking and use a running back mainly to run? Let's not over think the basic premise here. The RB is the first and only player to stop the first defender who gets through. You see the value of a blocking RB on virtually every pass play in college and pros. That's not even counting them running interference for rushing QBs and jet sweeps. Good coaches scout for good blocking RBs. That's how a lot of Nebraska backs earned NFL careers. An RB who can't pass block is a serious liability, a danger to getting your QB blindsided. An RB who blows more than one blocking assignment will be riding the bench on most teams. An RB who thinks he shouldn't have to block doesn't make the team. That IS the basic premise. My guess is that Wilbon just has to grow up a little, in all the predictable ways. ameer abdullah's scouting report says he's poor at pass protection. but he was drafted in the second round before many other backs. again, there's a reason most nfl teams have designated "passing down backs". the backs that play on other non-passing downs aren't in there for their exceptional pass blocking skills.
  3. unfortunately, this really reminds me of the old marlon lucky vs. brandon jackson argument. #freewilbon
  4. Eh, 11 or 92 is hitting him at the line. But if Cotton? on the edge holds his block Kondolo/Gates probably keep driving out and there's a nice lane he could hit. at that point, if he tried to cutback, yes. but he could have hit that hole hard to begin with and he would have had 7 yards before anyone touched him.
  5. yep. there is a reason why many football teams at college and pro levels have one back designated specifically for 3rd downs and other "passing downs". the running backs that play on other "non-passing downs" aren't exactly in there for their stellar pass protection skills.
  6. If you put Wilbon in for one play, when the entire defense knows it's a run... I gaurantee that we will no longer see threads about "where is Wilbon". They will all be replaced by "WTF is Riley doing???? Round hole! Square Peg!! rabble, rablble, rableee , arerabble..." everyone knew what nebraska was going to do on offense 80% of the time they lined up from 1968 to 2003. yet those teams racked up millions of yards. lets not get it twisted. having a good running offense is predicated on being able to pick up more than 2 yards precisely when the defense knows you are running the ball. Use Wilbon, who allegedly can't block, because the Huskers ran an option offense over 20 years ago. I'm sold. haha i don't even know where to start with this. if this is what you picked out from what i said, then it just isn't worth my time to continue with you. smh.

  8. i don't know... i know he's the coach, but if pass protection and pass catching are really the only issues, then for someone of mikale's talent, you have to find ways of using him where he won't be needed for pass pro. even if it is one down a series, and the entire defense knows he will be handed the ball. the reason is talent management and substitutions. it would not be good to see quality linemen and rbs leave because of the current playing policy. it also affects recruiting. this isn't the nfl.
  9. after watching this game today, to me its clear that its a position coaching issue. i don't necessarily think banker is at fault, although he does have to make some adjustments. watching the secondary, its not so much that they got beat, but how poor their confidence was on technique was on covering, tackling, and ball skills. you don't just get bad on all those things just like that something is definitely going on with the coaching. maybe the players just aren't buying what coach stewart is selling.
  10. the only one who needs to settle down here is you...no one here is letting "everyone know the issues". i watch football, and the original question was one intended to help understand the coaching and play. so you calm down. no one is calling for heads in this thread. Soo..you really are "that guy". By calling a guy "Elmassian" you are basically asking for his head b/c we all know Elmassian should have been fired given his track record over 4 years here. Its been 3 games in a completely different scheme. And also, i dont think all the DBs have played that bad. Kalu, Cockrell, and Davies have had their troubles, but DRex, Rose, and Jones i think have played pretty well. Why come out of lurking now and point to things that maybe arent quite up to snuff yet? no... and no. the fact that i said "he seems like mike riley's elmassian" doesn't mean i am asking for brian stewart's head. you're really grasping at straws here. i'm not a lurker. i really don't feel the need to say anything if i have nothing to say. i really like this staff, especially compared to the last one.
  11. by the way, watching the giants game today, thursday, are giants playing quarters on defense? it kinda looked similar.

  13. The biggest change in this defense for the worse is for cornerbacks. Everyone else is playing more down hill and being asked to do less thinking. The CB are being asked to do less thinking, but a lot more physically. They are being asked to be true cover corners without much help. Davie has played poorly there is no question about that, but there job description has changed completely and they have played some Pretty good WR and QB's to date. BYU had very tall good hands decent speed WR and 2 good QB's S. Alabama had that one good receiver who was a transfer from Alabama and that QB could really throw the deep fade. Miami Kaaya and his WR are the most talented group they will see this year. Rob Zatechka on his pod cast that said was the most physically talented team he has seen in a long time. We won't see QB/WR talent like this until the MSU game, and they aren't as talented as Miami. S. Miss will throw the rock around some also, but I think we will see some better execution. The secondary will get better with more reps, it will just take some time. I would rather give up 300 yards a game passing than 200 a game rushing. ok. i'll bookmark this for after the game on saturday. i might just do a play by play breakdown of pass plays during that game.
  14. lol its actually a sincere question. not trying to compare staffs or anything. just want to be confident in the coaching the dbs are getting, as i am in the rest of the team.
  15. so this is something that has been on my mind since the first game. it really seems to me like brian stewart is really struggling as a secondaries coach, and as i've mentioned before, if there is any coach on this staff that i feel will cost us games, its coach stewart. the play is just not good enough, and i don't think you can really explain away the dropoff in coverage between last year's secondary and this year's secondary simply by scheme. even if the scheme is different, there is an attitude, a swagger and a play style that they need to have that is just not there with them this year. for those in the know, how is the coaching in that area viewed among the coaches and/or players? so far, it seems like he is mike riley's elmassian.
  16. there's a league i'm commisioner for, and i'm trying to fill up the league. its a standard league, 12 teams, .5 ppr. if you are interested, just join at the link below: https://goo.gl/GgjzMF by the way, draft is today at 8pm central.
  17. I see us at 12-2 for the season. mark it.
  18. Agree with most of what you said. I tend to disagree with the bold. The new scheme puts the CBs on an island so they are going to get beat sometimes (hail mary notwithstanding). I think the talent is a tad overrated due to the scheme Bo ran. Those guys usually had help over top. Of course that made us more vulnerable to the run. i agree about the new scheme. there's just little nuances and tell tale signs that they need better coaching. even though they were outmatched size wise, there's just certain things that a db in some of their positions should not do. examples are the way they played the hail mary (goes without saying), the way they played those receivers after the catch, multiple times. i wish i could put together a highlight reel.
  19. for me, Positives: everything that has been mentioned. coaching staff is generally good, except one. - finally, we seem to have a qb that can throw and is being coached well. - receivers are really good. team overall is well coached and prepared. negatives: - our dbs coach is just not very good. from what i saw today, the coaching at that position is lacking. not the talent. - jamal turner had one too many mistakes. they may have to reconsider his position on the depth chart. - luke gifford really struggled out there. i'm not bashing players; i'm just saying who didn't play very well. rose-ivey needs to be back asap - oline needs to step up. they have everything they need to be great.
  20. based on the game today, this is pretty accurate.
  21. Not really. If they're interested in an increase or decrease, then a paired test makes sense. If it's not paired you might see that someone's smoking 3 cigarettes a day at 29 years old and it seems small, but maybe when they were 18 they were only smoking 1 a day. You have no reference. They can also use this same type of study to find out which types of people change or forget their original answers so they can improve how they do surveys. I'm guessing part of the reason they do it this way is because people who answer a question at age 29 about their smoking habits at age 18 are likely to remember things wrong. So it's probably better to do it this way. well, for every study conducted on people, there will always exist at least one way to dismiss the findings whether correct or semi-correct. this here won't be different. but that doesn't defeat the general premise. the fact that the initial apparent evidence based on what appears in front of us daily will point to one thing does not mean that that thing will be true. more often than not, it isn't. especially when it comes to stereotypes and race/ethnicity. specifically for weed and other drugs, it shouldn't be a hidden fact that the highest percentage of end-users of weed and other drugs is not black people. it just so happens that black people get in trouble far more for it than others. lol i'd say this thread has officially been derailed.
  22. well, you just did. if you don't know what you are talking about, usually its best just not to say anything. why say stuff like this and possibly stir up strife, especially when its just not true? i didn't even have to search longer than 10 seconds before i found this: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/03/150311124741.htm Thanks for showing me I am wrong and have biases based on stereotypes. i'm not sure if you are joking or not. in either case, the truth is everyone has biases and stereotypes in their minds. those biases and stereotypes aren't necessarily a problem for the subject of your judgment. they become a problem when you either act or make an argument using those stereotypes as your basis. that's the problem here, and people need to be able to differentiate between those two.

  24. Funny you should say that... Now if only we could get the coaches to have the same standard for all positions on the team...
  25. perhaps my research wasn't extensive. but my whole argument is not founded on that argument of blowout losses. regardless of how they compare, bo's team issues are still quite glaring and fundamental, and it will require fundamental changes in mentality and/or personnel to fix them. hopefully not personnel. I suppose we'll see at the end of this season. Oh, and watching paint dry has a greater uncertainty than the performance of bo's teams against top 25 BCS teams. so go right ahead. it's probably more fun anyway.
