  1. I believe Baker gets bashed (not just by the anti-Bo crowd either) a lot because he doesn’t put up Suh like stats. I also think people hold against him because he was a highly rated recruit. It is kind of like the people that held it against Marlon Lucky even though when his career was all said and done he had two 2nd Team All Big 12 selections, the most receptions ever by a RB at NU and is 4th on the All Time All Purpose Yardage list. Baker is a huge reason why Compton and David put up the tackle numbers they have. He eats up blocks and has every game the last two years. Compton’s on field leadership will be greatly missed next year. His play on the field can be replaced but the things he does that go unnoticed are the things we will miss the most.
  2. Compton has 30 unassisted tackles compared to 52 by Te’o. You also can’t just say “if you take out his interceptions” to try and make a point. He has 7 interceptions, which is good for 2nd in the nation. To put that into perspective, only 4 players in the history of Nebraska football have had 7 interceptions in a season. Josh Bullocks in 2003, Bill Kosch in 1970, Dana Stephenson in 1969 and Larry Wachholtz in 1966. The linebacker record is 5 by Tom Novak in 1948. I’m not saying Te’o should win the Heisman (because I would give it to Johnny Football) but comparing him to Compton is crazy. Suh should have won the Heisman and the fact that he didn’t is a complete joke.
  3. In Kirk Ferentz 14 seasons (including this season) Iowa has gone to 10 bowl games (2 BCS). He is 6-4 in bowl games with 4 Top 10 finishes (I’m pretty Hayden Fry only finished in the Top 10 once). While I don’t agree with what he makes a year, I don’t see how they are going to get anyone better. My brother in law is a huge Hawkeye fan and according to him Ferentz is exactly want they want. Us Husker fans will never understand that way of thinking.
  4. In my opinion Pelini should finish 3rd in the voting for Big Ten Coach of the Year. Yes he should be considered for it but he should not win it. Urban Meyer took a 6-7 team and turned them into an undefeated team that is the best in the conference should win it. What Bill O’Brien has done at PSU when that team had every reason to fall apart and they haven’t should have him finishing 2nd.
  5. didnt he play on an option oriented Georgia Tech team? Georgia Tech wasn’t running the option offense when Calvin Johnson was playing. Chan Gailey was their Head Coach at the time not Paul Johnson.
  6. There is no denying that Pelini has been willing to take a lot more in state walk on guys then Callahan was. I’m not going to argue that because the numbers don’t lie. I was just pointing out the numbers as far as signed in state scholarship recruits by each staff. Callahan in 4 years signed 15 and Pelini in 5 years has signed 16 (so far this year there is 1 more). This may also have to do with the lack of Big 12/Big 10 caliber in state players since 2004 but who knows. I only remember 4 kids from Millard (Shada, Olsen, Fisher, Tarpinian) going to Iowa, Robinson from Elkhorn going to Notre Dame and the kid at Oregon from Central in that time frame. I’m sure I’m missing some though.
  7. The "symbol" that is being talked about, is recruiting in-state talent. Callahan didn't offer scholarships to in-state kids, and would basically let someone else recruit them if they weren't willing to walk on. Anyone eligable to go to NU can be a walk on, but not just anyone can make the cut. Our tradition is to recruit the good kids in state, offer them scholarships and promote our walk on program. I pointed this out in another thread some time ago but I will say it again. In Callahan's four recruiting classses he averaged more signed scholarship in state players then Pelini has in his classes. I believe Callahan was just under 4 per year and Pelini was right around 3.5 per year. I think the whole Callahan didn't recruit in-state kids is overblown.
  8. I wonder if he is the only player in college football who was given a scholarship by the Athletic Director and not the Head Coach. I think it is funny in the beginning of the article it says that Callahan was recruiting him to walk on and then further down it says he is the “symbol” of a tradition Callahan had been neglecting. Callahan wasn’t neglecting this “symbol” if he was offering him a chance to walk on.
  9. First win in Iowa City in 20 years Iowa sinking to new depths of sucktitude. How much they payin Ferenz? Heck, I'll do the same job for $500k. They could save a million or so per year. lol I think he gets at least 4M for that crappy record he has. Highest paid state employee.
