  1. Totally agree. As someone said, the D can't be any worse and our O should improve.
  2. you guys are shaking my memory - another very good OL from our recent history. As someone mentioned, not having won anything significant as a team since 1999 can cause a person to forget about some real good individual players.
  3. That's my father's cousin. So technically my cousin as well, but his playing days were beyond my days, so I didn't feel it would be great for me to mention him, as I never witnessed him play. Stories from my father and grandfather, he was an absolute stud. Hall of Fame for here and the Vikings, I would only imagine so. I didn't realize he was a Husker. I only remember him as a Viking and a great one too.
  4. Great list. My short term (year 2000 and forward) must be suffering. Richie, the PF penalty, Incognito had a short fuse and mean streak - which made him a pretty good OL in my opinion. I can live wt some of his PF - he was normally coming to someone's aid or blowing some defender out of his shoes - passion. It is those drive ending 5 yard offside penalties that drive me nuts.
  5. is it me or do you ask this in each of these threads you've started? I think it is you. First time I asked this question. It was an honest ?? Can you think of a post-Solich OL that should be on this list? I cannot and I don't have an answer. The positive answer is that our style of offence has changed and we are more balanced run to pass - thus less of a chance of a Outland winner. The negative answer is that we haven't recruited and develope OL like we use to. From the DT thread....thought so ...so I guess you are forgetful Good catch!! I am forgetful. I'll try not to come across as cynical. Maybe it is my age - always dreaming for the 'good old days' when we had many team and individual awards. I need to keep looking forward.
  6. Add to that: once a 'pipeline' is established it feeds itself. In the "OLD DAYS" many of our linemen had the luxury of redshirting a year. By the time they were Seniors the line was like a machine. Can you imagine no sacks allowed for an entire year & very limited penalties - 1995. On the flip side, once the pipeline is broken, it takes years to get it working again. I think we are getting closer. Consistency at coaching helps - If Bo can keep the same group of coaches together we should see better results. After BC's firing, we had a lot of revolving doors wt our new coaching staff. Hopefully, our "on the job coaching training" will start to pay off - if these assistant coaches show loyalty and stay in the program long term.

The reason these guys are considered the "greatest" especially Tyler Moore, is because championships weren't won. Good observation. Would you place them on this list?

  9. I would agree that a top 35 'servicable D' should get us over the top to a 11-1 or 12-0 season. However, the top 35 performance is a huge stretch IMHO. Perhaps more raw talent then this years team - but no to little experience/development of the replacement guys. I'll reserve sipping any kool-aid until after UCLA and until we play someone significant in conference. Someone mentioned that tOSU won't be 12-0 due to Myers' abuse of Braxton Miller - running him too much. Just flip the coin: do we expose TM too much? What happens if he goes down - does that destroy our chances or will the team be strong enough at WR & RB to go on if TM sits out. Will Armstrong or Straton be able to step into that role like Brook B did in 1994 and allow the machine to keep on rolling?? I can flip the coin on which way to be bold at this point: 1. The young D turns out to be very servicable - we finish 11-2 (L CCG and BCS Bowl). Bo still can't win the big one and leaves on his own and is "promoted" to Head Coach of a SEC School. (This will be seen as promotion as he is moving from the Big 10 to the SEC like Wisky's coach did this year). Associate AD and former standout TE, Jamie Williams, influences the AD to hire Scott Frost as NU's next coach - after leading Oregon's O to the national championship game win. Tom Rathman is hired as NU OC, Jason Peter & Grant Winstrom are hired as our CO-DC. 2. The young D turns out to be a big project - we finish 8-5 ( L UCLA, UM, NW, PSU, Bowl Game - we aren't in the CCG) Bo is encouraged to leave for a DC coaching position in the NFL. Where he excels because he has the talent to run his system. Associate AD and former standout TE, Jamie Williams, influences the AD to hire Scott Frost as NU's next coach - after leading Oregon's O to the national championship game win. 10. Who is the greatest NU O lineman? First place is pretty evident - an important award is named after him - Remmington. Who else should be consdered and where would you rank them. Which team(s) had the best overall OL in NUs history? 1982 &1983 and 1995 IMHO Besides Dominic Raiola, I cannot think of one OL from the 2000's that should be on this list. Is that because: 1. Style of offense has changed - we've passed much more than in previous decades - thus less of an emphasis on run blocking & pancakes 2. Poor recruiting This is my list Dave Remmington Dean Steinkuhler Will Shields Zach Wiegert Aaron Taylor Bob Brown Brenden Stai Dominic Raiola Jake Young Got to love this: <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.c...player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> and this <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.c...player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  11. Sayers was asked to walk on, not offered a schol by Devaney. Thats what I was told and read about it. GBR!!! Sayers was going to Kansas before Devaney got to Nebraska. In the spring of 1962 when Devaney got to NU, Nebraska wasn't all that good. Kansas was actually pretty good at the time. That is why he went to Kansas. Sayers was one of my all time favorite Pro guys - yes I'm that old. If not for his knee injuries, I think it would have been and may still be his running record everyone (Smith, Sanders) would be aiming at. Sanders is the only guy close to his moves IMHO. If I remeber right Sayers had a longer stride but they both could stop on a dime and change directions. More than a few jocks were left on the field trying to tackle both of these guys.
  12. Sayers, Sanders, Smith - Suffering Succotash I wonder how many NC we would have won wt those guys. Sanders would have been on the team with Steve Taylor, etc. There would not have been any sooner magic by Keith Jackson then.
  13. I completely disagree that Martin's illegal hit as being up in the same range as Bell's. Martin leaves his feet, hits the player above the shoulder pads. Illegal. He has came a lot further and matured since. Bells hit was legal in every which way you look at it. I'll have to agree wt you there - one was legal the other not.
  14. My top 5 would be JR Henery Groce Newcombe Brown & Brown (ok I cheat - but I think Josh and Chris were equally good) As someone mentioned before, I'd like to see Jamal Turner more in the role of returner. He and AA could be a great tantum. They both see the field well and have moves that can light up the stadium.
  15. I was at the Okla State game. It was replayed a few times and the OSU crowd was fit to be tied. Eric Martin's hit is up there with the Kenny Bell block this year (not special teams but a good clean block). Eric was a great gunner on ST.
  16. For Kicker/pumter Henery is hands down. He proved that a punter could be a defensive weapon. I dare say he won some games due to his ability to punt us out of trouble and pin teams at the 3 yard line. It was unbelievable at times to see how he could get the ball to go out of bounds below the 5 yard line. As a FG Kicker - we were always within range. Both of these skill sets gave the coaching staff an added luxury - a good placed punt can sure pump up the D.
  17. This may be more challenging then best QB, RB or DE/DT. Who are our all time top 5 best special teams players - Kicker, Punter (K), Punt return, Kick off returns ®. Who is # 1? (Johnny Rogers IMHO) Some of these guys played Def or OFF besides their special team duties. Some great names come to mind: Johnny the Jet Rogers R Bobby Newcombe R DeJuan Groce R Kris Brown K Josh Brown K Alex Henery K Jesse Kosch K Tyronne Hughes R Irving Fryar R Sam Koch K Darin Erstad K Kyle Lawson K Ameer Abdullah R Niles Paul R Nate Swift R Brett Maher K Dan Hadenfeldt K Eric Hagg R Dana Brinson R Cortney Grixby R Josh Davis R
  18. Tackling and taking bad angles to get to the RB in the 1st place. Pretty risky - safety miss the tackle - there is no race - RB walks in for TD.
  19. I'm captivated. I have so much research to do. Girlfriend is on her way in town, I should have cleaned the apartment. Nothing is getting done. Can't be bothered. Is your girlfriend real??
  20. You sure bring up a big question & great observation. I too always remember us having strong rush ends who KNEW how to contain. Think back the the Wisky CCG - no containment - how many times did they run the jet sweep wt our ends never in place to stop it. One of my years in HS football I played DE - the 1st thing the coaches always stressed was containment. I may be wrong, but it appears that Bo may have place more emphasis on DT - due to his success at LSU wt Dorsey and then again at NU wt Suh. We thought Crick would be the next great D guy and then Stein. Both fell below expectations and the play of our ends was not strong enough to make up the shortcomings. This isn't a knock on Crick or Stein - both are/will be NFL guys but they could not overcome the other weaknesses in the line and at Middle line backer as a Suh or Dorsey could - both could dominate a game by themselves. I'd like to see how our sack #s have trended since Solich. If I understand Bo's philosophy, the DL is there to contain the OL allowing the LB and corners to stop the run and to blitz & sack. So, does the lack of great rush ends go down to scheme or because of an inability to recruit those kinds of players plus a dominate DT?? Recruiting or scheme?
  21. Going back to the original stats that were posted: Fake stories about girl friends David 0 Te'o 1 Media hype stories David 0 Te'o 2 (Grandma & girl friend) Playing for media darling ND David 0 Te'o 1 Reason to get Heisman David 0 Te'o 4
  22. In our discussion about TM would it be fair to summarize: 1. He's a top 10 QB if he never wins a CC or NC - maybe between 6-8 2. He is a top 5 if he wins a CC - behind Frazier (should be self evident), Gill (3 CC & #1 in "Favorite Son" catagory), Frost (1 CC & NC), Crouch (1 CC & Heisman) - your order may be different. 3. He's a top 3 if he wins the NC (behind Frazier and Gill)
  23. Dutton was pretty good. Should have been on the list. The fact that he helped to destroy texas in the bowl game is a big vote for him. Plus he's from my home state of SD. http://www.huskers.c...l?ATCLID=923949 Drafted in 1st Round by the Baltimore Colts (5th Overall) · 1973 Europe NCAA-Armed Forces Trip · 1973 First-Team All-American (AFC-Kodak, AP, UPI, Football News, Time Magazine, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News, Walter Camp Foundation) · 1973 First-Team All-Big 8 (AP, UPI) · 1973 Nebraska Defensive Player-of-the-Game (UCLA, Iowa State) 1973 (Senior) Earned All-America and All-Big 8 honors in ’73. Biggest of the all the Blackshirts, Dutton finished fourth on the team in tackles with 63 total tackles, 31 unassisted and 32 assisted tackles. Dutton started off the season on a high note as he was named Nebraska Defensive Player-of-the-Game against UCLA in a season opening 40-13 win. In the game UCLA was held to 20 net passing yards. Dutton and the rest of the Blackshirts came up big against Kansas on October 20th as the Huskers skimmed by in a 10-9 win, in the game Kansas was held to only 180 total yards, 90 yards each in the air and on the ground. Dutton was once again Nebraska Defensive Player-of-the-Game against Iowa State as the defense held the Cyclones to only 33-yards in the air in a 31-7 win. In the 1974 Cotton Bowl against Texas Dutton and the Blackshirts held the Longhorns to one field goal and 196 total yards. An even bigger accomplishment was the fact that All-American fullback Roosevelt Leaks of Texas was held to only 48 yards rushing on the day. Nebraska went on to win the game 19-3, this was Nebraska's fifth straight bowl win dating back to a December 20, 1969 win over Georgia in the Sun Bowl, 45-6.
