  1. Fair enough, but it's foolish to think you can predict with any certainty how a coach is going to do. You hire a person who you think is going to give you good odds of success, who's a good fit, etc. You give them their shot. If they make it, great! If they don't, on to the next one. But the reality is it's just a guessing game. Look at Pete Carroll. A washed up NFL coach that was the fourth or fifth choice? Turned into one of the best college football coaches of all time. The point is, even the people that do this for a living can't say with any certainty whether a coach is going to "do better" than his predecessor. All any university can say is that the current guy is not working and its time to give someone else a shot in hopes he can. Thus, rather than a comparative analysis which would be inherently speculative, the analysis should simply be, "Is the current guy getting it done?" If not, you move on. It really is that simple. Good thing you weren't in charge in '68. Or '78. Or '91.
  2. "Nah, nah, nah; I'm not listening." I actually responded to his point, I just refuse to be boxed into the issue as he framed it. You, on the other hand, have conspicuously shut up (and thankfully so) after I pointed out the objective shortcomings of your beloved. You mean where you pointed out how after the Callahan debacle of two losing seasons out of four, Bo has made it to 3 conference championships and hasn't missed a bowl game, winning 2? (And I'm not ignoring the fact that he has a worse record against ranked teams than unranked teams . . . just like every other coach.)
  3. He wants a perfect coach. And doesn't even know if one exists. It's like he has a 70 carat diamond but he wants to find a 100 carat diamond, so let's start digging!
  4. So you stick with a mediocre coach solely out of fear you might do worse? That, to me, is cowardice, plain and simple. Not to mention that you act as though Nebraska is going to be stuck with Pelini's replacement for the next 25 years, like it or not. If the next guy sucks too, we can move on again. That's the nature of the beast. Coaching hires are not like timeouts; we don't have a finite number. Take a look at UCLA. Bob Toledo was coach from 1996 to 2002. He went 49-32. He was replaced by another mediocre coach, Karl Dorrell, who coached from 2003 to 2007 and went 35-27 over that span. He was replaced by another mediocre coach in Rick Neuheisel, who coached from 2007 to 2011 and went 21-29. UCLA replaced Neuheisel with Jim Mora, whom all would agree has that program on the definite upswing. That's four (4!) coaches in a 15-year span before finally finding what appears to be a good coach. Nebraska can do the same if that's what it takes to find a winner. No, you have it wrong again. We stick with Pelini because he IS a winner. We already found one. You want to can him and take a wild chance at finding a better winner because of some unknown emotionally subjective reasons, while ignoring all of the obvious objective facts about the situation, as well as the history of the last 50 years of Nebraska football.
  5. That's what you got out of what I said? I was referencing the differences in opinions between the two different sides, the "haters" and the "sunshine pumpers". But that is the main difference. One hurts the team, one doesn't. But the decrease in performance by the team preceded (and, in fact, caused) the negativity. Thus, it's difficult to say the negativity is hurting the team's performance much if at all. Fan negativity had nothing to do with this: http://espn.go.com/n...ameId=323360275 More importantly, as a fan, I am concerned more with the team's long-term best interests than the short-term interests. I no longer fear a 4-loss season or a blowout on primetime TV. Callini have desensitized me to that. My nightmare is that Pelini is still the coach four years from now and we are in the exact same place: mediocre wins, blowout losses, and not a championship crumb to be found. In my opinion, I've seen enough in these 6 years to know that that's exactly what's going to happen if we retain Pelini. He's stubborn, arrogant, and has surrounded himself with inexperienced sycophant coordinators who are in over their heads. Meanwhile, he's alienated the fan base, the media (national and local), and the administration. Quite frankly, the only thing that can be said for him is that the players "love him" one of the most completely unremarkable demonstrations of Stockholm Syndrome I've ever seen, since virtually every player in college or professional sports has or would express the exact same sentiments about their respective coaches. In my opinion, I think anyone who disagrees is in denial or is so completely unaware of how far their own standards and expectations have fallen, that even an above average coach at Nebraska will come down on them like a cold bucket of water. By expressing my disappointment with Pelini, I hope that my voice will join with other voices who do not want to see us continue to wallow in mediocrity in perpetuity. I hope that those with the power to make the decision will hear our words, wake up, and make the change that needs to be made. Might this "hurt" the team in the short term? Perhaps. But if the difference between negativity "hurting" the program is a 9-3 season and an 8-4 season, I'll take that risk if it hastens the dawn of the day when we can close the lid on the Pelini experiment and move on with someone who actually has a chance of delivering on what he's promised. And you ignore the fact that the odds are much greater that we would get someone worse than Pelini and it would be detrimental to the program in the long term. But you obviously need to rationalize your desire to spew negativity, and no one can really stop you from doing it, so don't let me slow you down.
  6. No, from post #24 in this thread: Nothing wrong with constructive criticism, but there's really no reason for shrill, whiny, incessant, hateful negativity. And it's really not hard to tell the difference. I agree, there is plenty to criticize. Just take some care in how you word it. Be aware that the players/coaches/recruits might be reading it.
  7. I agree with this. If we're going to discuss the impact positivity and negativity have on the team, the impact of negativity FAR outweighs the impact of positivity. I agree that negativity, directed at the players or at the coaches, has far more impact than positivity. But, I have a serious question; Are we to treat posting here on HB as if everything/anything we post is intended directly at players and coaches? I understand that tweeting a player or otherwise directly contacting them with negative comments is crossing the line. I would never do that. But, should offering a critical opinion on HB be considered taboo as well? I've not had much good to say about the decision to retain Bo for another year or about the threats that some players would leave if Bo did. Some other posters have taken great offense to my comments. I guess I've always felt this was a proper venue to air concerns and opinions of this nature and that it was not intended for or directed at the players/coaches themselves. Wouldn't they need to go out of their way trying to find comments on HB to become upset with? Who does that responsibility and culpability fall on? Does the poster that called me an idiot because of it owe me an apology, or was I wrong to assume my opinions here should not be consumed directly by the players/coaches? It's a public forum. You shouldn't say that stuff if there's even a possibility of them reading it.
  8. Husker Football --More Than Winning Husker Fandom -- More Than Whining
  9. That's what you got out of what I said? I was referencing the differences in opinions between the two different sides, the "haters" and the "sunshine pumpers". But that is the main difference. One hurts the team, one doesn't.
  10. It's hard to deny this fact. I have said that I am questioning my fan status, but I keep coming back here to talk about it. And it's still a major topic of conversation with my friends, co-workers and family. Stands to reason that if I didn't care about or wasn't interested in the Huskers... I would re-direct those energies elsewhere. Not pointing the finger at anyone in particular, but I say if someone really is a true fan, then any cancerous hateful propaganda coming out of their mouth SHOULD be directed elsewhere, like somewhere that potential recruits and/or current players won't be exposed to it. It's damaging to the team. Nothing wrong with constructive criticism, but there's really no reason for shrill, whiny, incessant, hateful negativity. And it's really not hard to tell the difference. Much like the other side of the argument feels about shrill, whiney, incessant, unbridled hopefull positivity! Sorry couldn't resist. Just like you feel the "anti" side goes too far over the top, that side feels that the "pro" side is doing the head in the sand move. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground. This is 100% my opinion with absolutely nothing to back it up, but I'm sure every major college football program in the country has the exact same issues with the social media situation. I would think for every recruit swayed one way by it, another swings back the other way. I bet the Alamba message boards are spinning out of control today. So you think positivity hurts the team???

  12. You sir, are a good fan and I applaud your attitude.
  13. We did that 10 years ago. It was in all the newspapers.
  14. And, proving the point . . . You're not a Husker fan. You root for them to lose. You were happy they lost Friday and you were happy about Bo's meltdown, because you thought it would mean he would be fired. You're a disgusting and dishonest POS.
  15. Allow me to explain. Most people have 20/20 hindsight and can see the havoc wreaked on the program by firing a 9 win coach, since they've seen it happen before. They've also seen the kind of success that the program has had in the past with coaching continuity. Retaining Bo is best for the program. Firing Bo might be worse for the program than the last time we fired a 9 win coach. So if you're honest about your loyalty, you need to switch sides in this debate ASAP.
  16. Seriously? Beating a 6-5 Penn State team in overtime, that has losses to Indiana, & Minny is all it took to change your mind? Every issue that has plagued this team for 3 seasons was right there, front and center trying to lose us a game we should have dominated. We're a 3 inch wide extra point attempt away from a loss and yet you're on the Bo-wagon because there's another W in the column? Come on man, quit flip flopping. The damn special teams play is enough for me to want Bo out. I've never, at any level, seen punt coverage like that. Why do we even bother to put more than 3-4 guys out on the field? What the hell...that is a glaring beacon of light into Bo's HC ability. How can he watch that week in and week out and not step up and make a change? That's an HC duty, but he's either got his head in the sand, or just doesn't care. That's one glimpse so obvious even the casual fan can see the deficiency. But I can guarantee you the same deficiencies exists in other aspects of the game as well, most of us just aren't smart enough to see it so we go on thinking things are great. But opposing coaches see it. So you're upset with another win. Somehow I expected that.
  17. It sounds like you might be unfamiliar with what the federal exchange does. I know what it does. And it's not conjecture that $600 million has too many zeroes. I work with a team of people that maintains a huge volume website that ties into lots of other databases. (I actually work with one of the larger databases.) Uh huh. I'm still pretty new here, but I get the feeling you're a lib and you think I'm a con. I don't go for those labels. I'm conservative on some things, lib on others. I'm not even anti-Obamacare. But $600 million for a website is highway robbery. Defend Obamacare all you want. But stop defending this expenditure. It damages your credibility and hurts your chance of success with more worthwhile crusades.
  18. $600 million is enough to pay 3,000 programmers $200,000 each. Anyone who thinks $600 million is a fair price to pay to develop a website probably shouldn't be throwing around terms like "ignorance".
  19. More conjecture? Again... compelling. It sounds like you might be unfamiliar with what the federal exchange does. I know what it does. And it's not conjecture that $600 million has too many zeroes. I work with a team of people that maintains a huge volume website that ties into lots of other databases. (I actually work with one of the larger databases.)
  20. Do you really think it should cost $600 million to develop a website?
  21. That's funny, the Huskers have five national championships, and ALL of them came after we stuck with a coach for 9 or more years. And none of them came from a coach who hadn't won a conference championship in their first 6 years. 2 Big 8 co-championships for TO versus 3 division championships for Bo. Isn't a tie for 1st in the Big 8 about the same as a division championship in a 12 team conference?
