  1. The status updates were already going well beyond noting things that were happening.  So several of them have been hidden and we're back to political talk needs to stay in the P&R Forum.

To be fair a few of those topics weren't exactly news, it was just bait-y articles that I saw passed around reddit's political subs all day that day and the loaded question belonged in P&R anyways.  I missed anything after I posted but I'll imagine it was entertaining and that I did my part I guess.

  2. Are hospitals getting a federal payment for each Covid-19 death?

This seems to me like the myth that only scientists funded by big oil should be believed on climate change because government funded scientists have an incentive to be alarmist and some sort of bias, when the opposite is true.  Or that vaccines are dangerous and cause autism and the medical professionals have an incentive to push them because they get more money.

We have states that have stopped releasing covid death information and excess deaths that aren't really accounted for from previous averages.  So at best its probably under-reported.  Then someone misinterprets payments to hospitals treating the pandemic and wants to make it look like they are all committing fraud and trying to screw us over.

This American distrust of educated professionals but blindly latching onto some nutcase conspiracy theory is idiotic.  I wish more people that see things like this would stop and think "wait a minute, that doesn't sound believable, and really sounds like it's been framed to anger me." Then seek actual sources (like nuanced is doing in this status update) , instead of just getting outraged and spreading misinformation.  Everything in life is more nuanced than this "everyone has an agenda and is trying to screw me over" worldview that people that blindly buy into stuff like this seem to have.

Here's something to think about though, if every covid death paid hospitals 17k (which it didn't) that's still ~1.4 billion dollars with the current death toll.  The president turned half a trillion dollars in covid funds into his own piggy bank having basically no oversight or visibility into where our tax dollars go there, that's 400x the amount of money we are talking about for ALL covid deaths thus far.  That's where outrage should be directed because we all have a right to see where our taxes go.

By working to not overwhelm hospitals, morgues, crematoriums by flattening the curve, we are spreading out the disease over a longer time.

The alternative is > 1.5% of the infected, which would be somewhere around 70% of the population before herd immunity would kick in, dying along with whatever number of people die from not being able to get treated in hospitals for other health problems or emergencies because we've overrun all medical facilities and staff with coronavirus.  That's 3,433,500 dead just from the virus if they died at the rate they are now, while we still have ventilators and protective equipment left.  We wouldn't have enough for long, so you could expect that ratio of death to infected to rise significantly.

Do you think life just goes back to normal if we kill off more than 5 civil war's worth of Americans in the next couple months?

Worrying about not having football this fall seems a bit childish.

  4. Thinking about a Youtube TV account. Anybody tried it?

You still see commercials in the cable TV streams.  Sometimes you'll see a "we're at a commercial break" when local cable companies would be running local or regional ads.

I wasn't saying there's a streaming service to get rid of them, just that I don't watch any cable TV or streams of cable TV.  When I watch TV now it's OTA, mostly PBS or local news and even that's maybe a couple times a week.

it was fine, they offer a free trial so you can give it a try before you decide.  I found it to be lots of sports channels and lots of news channels and not much else.  Also I cut the cord years ago and seeing commercials again really reminded me why I hate TV so I canceled it before I was charged.

The service itself was fine, streams were good and high quality.  I am still considering subbing for football season depending on how busy my schedule is looking in the fall.

The chancellor keeps sticking his nose into the football program, so yes, if we have to clean house again we need to start there so HP can't keep f'ing it up. If he would do the right thing and stay out of it we'd be better off. Should we have to get rid of his guys, we're going to have to get rid of him too.

Nope. Next time the house needs to be cleaned from the regents that go along with this crap on through the chancellor's office and down.
