** 2023 Game 2 "Expert" Picks: Nebraska at Colorado
Packerhuskerfan replied to Saunders's topic in Husker Football
We've been favored a lot in the Riley and Frost era and still managed to lose a good chunk of them. Until we start winning consistently, I just assume Nebraska is going to lose against a Power 5 team. One gets less gut punch that way if they lose and more thankful if they win. There is a lot riding on this game as a 0-2 start will be hard to bounce back from and make a bowl game. There is little margin for error the rest of the season with a 0-2 start. -
He is definitely here at the beginning of year 4 unless there is a major controversy. Even if the first 3 seasons Nebraska didn't make a bowl game, he still would get at least most of the 4th season before getting canned if he failed again.

Is this Saturday the last chance to prove we aren't a joke?
Packerhuskerfan replied to BoSolich's topic in Husker Football
If we don't win this, I don't think we get to 6 wins because the margin of error would be too slim. I do think the recruiting for the rest of year could be helped or hurt greatly by this Saturday's result. Obviously, it isn't the end of Nebraska or Rhule. Rhule will get at least 4 seasons to prove himself. It isn't going to get any easier with the top PAC-12 teams joining next season. -
Casey Thompson with a big game today:
-
Nebraska pretty much just needed to not turn the ball over in the final 5 minutes and they'd have won the game. They proceeded to turn the ball over twice and dropped an easy interception. It is amazing how they keep finding ways to lose.
-
Yeah, our defense has been good enough in recent years to not be the weak link in most of the games, but doing just that won't win you the games in the same way say Iowa's defense does. They make the big game changing plays multiple times a game. That is the difference between a losing record and a bowl team.
-
They missed our TD before the half and just didn't think there was enough evidence to overturn as well. It is what it is. If we had 1 or 2 less turnovers or the defense doesn't drop that last INT opportunity the Cornhuskers win the game anyways. The refs could help, but Nebraska is still its own worst enemy.
-
Sims is the same turnover machine he was at Georgia Tech. There is no fixing this at this stage. At best, you get a Tommy Armstrong turnover type that makes a few big plays and maybe get to 6 wins. Most likely, they get another 4 win season.

I think Thompson hits that wide open receiver on that deep first down throw. I also don't think he throws the pick in the endzone and late it the game. All that was needed from Thompson was to get him to run a little more. I'd rather teach Thompson to run some more than to have to teach Sims to pass. The Nebraska D looked good overall, but they dropped an easy INT late in the game that might have sealed it. Minnesota didn't drop their easy opportunities.

We are still horrible at time management and time out usage. Sims is bad. I would be surprised if we could have s winning record with that type of QB play. He was grossly inacurrate, stares down receivers, and doesn't go through progressions. They should not have ran Thompson out of town.
-
Should have kept Casey.
-
Nebraska is cursed and undisciplined.
-
Poor playcalling. Needed to eat clock.
-
Heck, get a FG and put us up 2 scores and that might be enough.
-
That's a we don't trust the QB to throw it away play.
-
I guess Rhule doesn't call anything if he has enough time to give interviews and then they have a false start.
-
10 was open.
-
Fox's rules guy seemed to think it was a TD. I thought there was enough to overturn it, but I'm not surprised it wasn't.
-
Poor clock management with 2 TOs there near the end. I'm not sure why they didn't promise Casey Thompson the starting job. Sims can't pass, but you can teach Thompson to run more.
-
I feel like Thompson is a way better QB than Sims, so I hope he stays one more year. They just need to get Thompson more comfortable with running a bit more when nothing is there.
-
I'd rather Thompson and Rioala not feel threatened. I hope this doesn't cause Thompson to transfer or Rioala not to come here. Sims seems like a project.
-
As long as we win, I guess it doesn't matter, but I get the feeling our freshman class and transfer class for 2023 are not going to be ranked very high at all.
