The Hurricanes lost to Northeastern, 78-77, on Quincy Ford’s jumper at the buzzer in their last contest. Despite the loss and the drop from 15th to 21st in the AP poll, the Hurricanes have been impressive early on, posting all five of their wins by double figures. Miami is a balanced club with four players averaging double figures, led by senior Sheldon McClellan’s 17.5 ppg. In all, six Hurricanes average at least 8.8 points per game as Miami averages 89.3 points per game. Senior Tonye Jeriri anchors the inside, hauling in 10.3 rebounds per game and blocking 1.5 shots per outing. Miami returns their top four scorers from a team that went 25-13 and reached the NIT finals in 2014-15.

All five wins have been by double figures, while Tuesday’s 15-point win was its smallest of the season. Cincinnati is coached by Mick Cronin, who is in his 10th year at the school after serving as head coach at Murray State. The Bearcats have made the last five NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2012. The Bearcats return all five starters and nine letterwinners from a team that went 23-11 and reached the third round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament. UC is a balanced attack, as two players are in double figures while nine players average at least seven points per game. Senior Farad Cobb leads UC at 13.6 points per game and is hitting 57 percent from 3-point range. The Bearcats’ strength is on the defensive end, as UC is second nationally in steals, third in turnover margin, seventh in blocked shots and eighth in field goal percentage defense. Cincinnati leads the all-time series, 4-1, and Friday’s matchup marks the third straight year the teams have met. Last season, Nebraska won 56-55 in double overtime at Pinnacle Bank Arena, as Shavon Shields and Terran Petteway had 13 points each. Tai Webster scored all nine of his points in the final 10 minutes of regulation and in the two overtimes. Tony Caupain led Cincinnati with 13 points, but the Bearcats shot 32 percent from the field. In 2013, Cincinnati posted a 74-59 home win behind a 21-point effort from All-American Sean Kilpatrick. The Huskers and Bearcats have met once on a neutral court, a 84-73 Bearcats win in the semifinals of the 1996 San Juan Shootout. Nebraska is 11-16 all-time against the schools in the American Athletic Conference. The Golden Lions have played a challenging schedule, taking on Oklahoma State, Michigan State and Cincinnati in their last three games and will play 17 games before playing their first home game of the 2015-16 season. UAPB, under the direction of eighth-year coach George Ivory, returns three starters from a team that went 13-19 last year. The Golden Lions opened with a win at Seattle before falling at Oklahoma State, 86-74 to begin a three-game losing streak. Senior JoVaughn Love is the team’s leading scorer, as he averages team highs in both scoring (11.8) and rebounding (6.4). He had 15 points and nine rebounds in their win over Seattle and 21 points against Oklahoma State.

Mike Hawkins led four Lions in double figures with 13 points, including 3-of-4 from long range in Tuesday’s win. Nebraska will be the third power conference team the Lions have faced, as Southeastern Louisiana lost to TCU and Texas A&M in its first two games. The Lions were picked seventh in the Southland Conference preseason poll. Second-year coach Jay Ladner brings back six letterwinners, including a pair of starters, from a team that went 9-23 in 2014-15. Senior Zay Jackson leads Southeastern Louisiana with 13.3 points and 5.0 assists per game. As a junior, Jackson averaged 15.4 points and 4.6 assists per game to earn honorable-mention All-Southland honors. Jackson backed up current NBA performer Isaiah Canaan as a freshman at Murray State. Series history: Nebraska won the only previous meeting, 77-59, on Jan. 5, 2010. In that game, Brandon Richardson had 15 points, while Ryan Anderson added 14 for the Huskers. Delaware State went 18-18, reached the title game of the MEAC Tournament and played in the CBI in 2014-15. The Hornets had to replace four starters from that team, including Kendall Gray, who was the MEAC Player of the Year, and Amere May, who led the MEAC in scoring at 21.2 points per game. Second-year coach Keith Walker returns seven letterwinners and just one starter. DeAndre Haywood is the team’s most experienced player, as he started 19 games and averaged 6.3 points per game in 2014-15. With a young team, the Hornets played 13 players in the 62-56 loss to Delaware in the season opener and were led by Devin Morgan’s 10 points. Against Penn on Tuesday, Haywood came off the bench and led DSU with 13 points and five rebounds, while Morgan finished with 12 points and four assists. Nebraska leads the all-time series, 3-0, although the teams have not met since the Huskers’ 68-39 victory on Dec. 8, 2003.

The Wildcats have reached the NCAA Tournament in nine of the past 10 years and have won the Big East regular season conference title in each of the past two years. The Wildcats went 33-3 last year before getting upset by North Carolina State in the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. This year, Villanova is picked to win the Big East and returns a pair of starters in 2015-16. The returnees are highlighted by Big East Co-Player of the Year Ryan Arcidiacono, who averaged 10.1 points and 3.5 assists per game last year. Senior forward Daniel Ochefu gives Villanova an inside presence, as he averaged 9.2 points and 8.5 rebounds a game last year and had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the Wildcats’ opener. Tuesday’s matchup with the Huskers marks the first time Villanova has hosted a Big Ten team since March of 1989. Villanova leads the all-time series, 2-0, while Tuesday’s meeting is the first between the two teams on the contiguous 48 states. The Wildcats victory in 1987 (70-53) took place at the Maui Classic, while the 1998 win (75-60) took place at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Ala. Nebraska is 32-36 all-time against current Big East members.

Junior guard Isaac Williams is the program’s top returnee, as he averaged 9.8 points per game last year including a team-high 43 3-pointers. He had 20 points in the team’s exhibition game against Stillman. Senior forward Latrell Love averaged 5.9 points per game and 2.1 rebounds per game while making 13 starts, while Delta Devils will be counting on a host of new faces. MVSU’s game with Nebraska begins a long road trip, as the Delta Devils will not play a home game until Jan. 4. The team has 13 road games, including matchups with Air Force, BYU, Northwestern and Hawaii before beginning SWAC play in January.

The Wolves went 23-9 last season, including a 15-7 record in the Northern Sun Conference, and reached an NCAA Regional for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign. Under head coach Paul Sather, Northern State has won 20 or more games in two of the past three seasons, posting a 62-31 mark in those seasons after his teams combined for a 25-27 record in his first two years at the school. Prior to taking the Northern State job, Sather spent five years at Black Hills State. He played collegiately at Northern State, helping the school to a pair of runner-up finishes in 1993 and 1994 when Tim Miles served as an assistant at the school. The Wolves return a pair of starters from last year in guards Skye Warwick and DJ Pollard. Warwick averaged 10.9 points per game as a junior and is an excellent outside shooter, hitting 46 percent from beyond the arc. Pollard made 20 starts and averaged 9.8 points per game. In addition, junior Darin Peterka averaged 9.5 points per game as a sophomore and was among the team leaders with 74 assists.
