  1. junior4949 brought up Purify being over weight as a sign he is undisciplined and doesn't care. My point was that a lot of players let themsevles go in the offseason. So, either all these people don't care and are undisciplined, or being overweight is just something that happens to many regardless and thus doesn't signify anything. The latter seems a lot more reasonable to me.
  2. You want a pattern? Okay, how's this. Purify shows up to spring camp like 20 some pounds over weight. I read an article the other day that puts Nicks about 25 pounds over weight. By extension i guess he too is a lazy, unmotivated, undisciplined person too? Slausen is reportedly tipping the scales in excess as well. As i recall Bjax and Glenn have come in over weight as well. Possibly Lucky too. I don't see any merit to Purify's weight signaling anything. Football players in general seem to let themselves go a little in the offseason.
  3. yep, that is exactly what all these ass-holes say, after they crash and kill someone, "gee, i wasn't trying to hurt someone"...i just got a little drunk and it happened. until you lose someone close to you, it doesn't hit home. Question: why is it impossible to say that i don't think it would be a bad idea to help Mo without saying i don't have a problem with drunk driving? This problem seems to be a microcosm for a lot of other topics on the board now that i think about. I'm aware of the side of home your sitting on. I take drunk driving very seriously. I never said Mo shouldn't be punished for what he did. However, are you aware of the other side of the house? Should we just put the guy to death, since there's no way he can ever undo what he did that night? Personally, while i don't excuse driving drunk, i also don't think a person who makes this mistake becomes a waste of human being or without merit of further existence. What's wrong with saying that he screwed up, but i don't have a problem giving him another chance?
  4. i really don't see much in common between the DUI and the bar fight. Other than in order to be driving drunk, you have to drink first, and a common place to do that is at a bar. Call me crazy, but i'm not seeing a pattern other than alcohol. The intent with the bar fight was to hurt some guy, who from what i gathered had as much play in causing that incident as Mo did. Imo, this got blown way out of proportion. It was a non-issue then and still is now. The DUI on the other hand i take very seriously, but the intent is far different. He wasn't out trying to hurt anyone, it was merely his carelessness that put others at risk. I don't mean to minimize the seriousness, only to point out he wasn't trying to hurt anyone, just using very poor judgement. The two events are very different imo. If there's any relation to them it's alcohol. And if Mo has an alcohol problem i'd rather try and help him with it then kick him out on the streets.
  5. I've heard a rumor that Sean Callahan said Mo Purify was arrested on a DUI last night. Anyone heard anything about this?
  6. I can understand making the most of your recruiting experience, but this one seems to be enjoying it a little too much. I think he's serious about looking outside NE and i think he's seriously liking what he's seeing at OU. Plus with the rivals thing and other rumores, i gotta think where there's smoke, there's fire. Hoping for the best, but planning for the worst with this one.
  7. I've heard Florida has now come calling as well. Chuck'd, I don't doubt what you've heard, and i'm not saying you are wrong. I'm just passing along what i've heard. It's nothing personal, but i'm gonna be a little concerned about any committ that gets this much attention and wouldn't count any of them till they ink their LOI. We just seem to loose a lot of big time prospects at the last minute. But on that note, while it's a bit intimidating to be up against all these schools, this is also an excellent chance to show we can recruit up against the big boys.
  8. I'd argue the BE is better than the ACC going into this season.
  9. I've heard that in response to UT lossing two tackles, Mack is looking for replacement and may have contacted Bryce. Bryce might be looking to schedule a visit to Austin.
  10. http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1200&u_sid=2393594 LINCOLN - Nebraska receiver Maurice Purify has been authorized to participate in a pre-trial diversion program, which would make it unlikely that formal charges would be filed against him in Lancaster County court for his arrest nearly four weeks ago. Chief City Prosecutor John McQuinn said his office, after reviewing police reports, agreed to pre-trial diversion at the request of Purify's attorney, Jon Braaten. As of Wednesday, however, McQuinn said nothing has been arranged yet. Purify is scheduled for a June 7 appearance in Lancaster County court. "At the present time, we assume that he won't be going to court if he participates in pre-trial diversion," McQuinn said. "If something should happen and if he elects not to participate, then our office would probably reassign him a court date." It's unclear how pre-trial diversion might affect any team discipline handed down by Nebraska coach Bill Callahan. In a statement after Purify's arrest, Callahan said he was "very concerned about this current situation" but wouldn't comment further until the matter went through the legal process. Lincoln police charged Purify with two counts of assault, resisting arrest, trespassing and failure to comply after a May 5 incident at a downtown Lincoln bar. Purify allegedly threw a man over a table and hit him several times, and allegedly also struck the victim's girlfriend. Purify was the Huskers' second-leading receiver last season, catching 34 passes for 630 yards and seven touchdowns.
  11. http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1921 From: Russ, Bellevue Published Tuesday, May 29, 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom, I love your column, even though I do not always agree with you. You always seem to make a valid point, and you are not afraid to admit when you are wrong. I have to say the interview you did with Steve Pederson was one of your best. You asked very pointed questions that needed to be answered by him, and I appreciated how he answered them. My question is, did you do the interview to get answers for sports fans or did you do the interview to maybe heal some wounds between the two of you? Either way, I applaud you both for doing a great job of asking and answering what most fans wanted to know. I hope both of you continue to do what you do best and I hope you two can become better friends now that you both understand each other better. Russ: I'm glad you asked that question. There's something I've wanted to get off my chest. Might as well do it here. I was taught a way to do things, in journalism school at Missouri, and by a couple of Hall of Famers, Tracy Ringolsby (Rocky Mountain News, baseball writer who made Cooperstown) and Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, pro football writer inducted in Canton), along the way. There are a few simple rules. One of them is if you are going to criticize someone, get their side of the story first. Then, you can still rip them if you still disagree. Now, we can't always do this because of deadlines and breaking news. But this is a preferable way to do business, for a couple reasons. One, it's fair. Two, you avoid giving your subject the loophole of saying, "You never talked to me, here's the real story" and having a hole in your story/column. Three, the subjects appreciate the chance to give their side and it helps you in future conservations, relationships, etc. Not everyone does it this way. There are plenty of columnists who will rip a coach, player and never talk to them. It's a columnists' right and prerogative. But it's not how I was taught. I didn't do that with Steve Pederson when I wrote the "fortress" column. I wish I would have talked to Pederson ahead of time and gotten the "security" angle. I still don't like the security guard. I still think Pederson had been hiding. It wouldn't have altered how I felt or what I wrote. But it would have made for a more rounded, more complete column. That it was less is my regret. Pederson and I met a few weeks ago (I called the meeting) at a coffee shop in the Haymarket area of Lincoln. We sat outside by the sidewalk and talked for an hour about this very topic (you should have seen some of the strange looks we got!). We had had a good working relationship over the years. I don't agree with everything he does. But it's my job to talk to the newsmakers in our sports world. And it's Pederson's job to talk to us. He hadn't done that a lot, either. So it was good for both of us to air things out and move on with a better relationship. Why not call him? I'll be honest. It was lazy. And, I can't lie to you: it's easy for me to get caught up in the talk radio/chat room world we live in, where quick hits on players and coaches and A.D.'s are done in driveby fashion. I got caught up in that. I am trying to get away from the talk radio and chat room world. There's nothing wrong with those things. They're very addictive. But now I'm done. I guarantee you, my family appreciates it! Well, except for this forum. Keep the questions coming.
  12. I don't see all this recruiting magic everyone is trumpeting. Cally's first class was a last minute glue and paste job. His first true class wasn't till the following year which included players like Lucky, who were only sophs last year. It's a bit unfair to judge a kid as a soph or frosh, they need time to develop. This season, as that first true class becomes upperclassmen, i think we'll begin seeing the effects. Next season it should really start to pay off.
  13. The top four teams -- Louisville, West Virginia, Rutgers and USF -- stack up with any league outside of the SEC. .... If we were in the BE in place of any one of these teams, this statement would read exactly the same way with us in place of the swapped out team. Does anyone doubt this? I tend to believe Mizzou would as well. But since were in the Big 12 north, we're only "a top 20" instead of a "BCS level team". I don't understand why the Pac10 and Big10 get so much love either. What have the other teams done outside of USC? Who did Wisky play last year? Who did MU play? I'll give it to the SEC as being the most difficult, but after that it's wide open imo. I can't understand anyone putting the BE ahead of us... or any conference besides the ACC for that matter.
  14. jauken, I've though about going, but had heard Wake put a hold on ticket sales to slow down Husker fans from eating them up. Only selling season tickets or something like that. Where did you get your tickets? And if you don't mind me asking, how much did they cost you?
  15. Thank you. As far as I'm concerned, he's proven himself guilty of poor judgement, and that alone justifies an immediate indefinite suspension. out of curiosity, what would be the point in suspending him now? it's the summer. you're saying he doesn't have to go to work outs? he doesn't have to go to conditioning? imo, it's not much punishment to take these thigns away from him. i don't see the point.
  16. Well who ever said it needed to put a sock in it (Grix said it too). I don't care if it was to defend the secondary's rep. Its not NU like and a nanny/nanny boo-boo like reponse that makes me wonder if you are NU material or not IMO. I can think of 1000 responses better than well it was good enough to win 9 games. if i'm remembering correctly, the conext of Elmo's response was far from boo hoo. and they have given many responses before this one... i think he just got fed up at answering the same question. But for the players sake, this may not have been such a bad move. Wether you think Grixby is terrible or doing the best he can while out of position, the truth is their wasn't many other options. They had to keep this unit's confidence up somehow. i hope that this isn't the same line they used in spring camp or are using for the summer.
  17. is it really fair to call this premedidated? From what it sounds like, Purify was in the same bar as this guy later in the night by coincidence. Unless he walked up to the guy with the intent to start a fight, i don't think this is premeditated. This isn't to excuse what happened, either way Mo should've diffused the situation by leaving or ignoring the guy.
  18. Virginia Tech isn't consistently good... when did that happen?
  19. I don't mind those qoutes as much as I mind Cos and defensive players saying we waz good enough to win 9 games. I don't believe it was Coz that said that. I think it was Elmo. And i don't think he was saying that because nine is a lofty goal. But if you heard all the criticism the secondary got, you'd think we'd of won about three games. In truth, how many games did the defense or secondary cost us? Only one i can think of is OSU. I think that is the point that Elmo was trying to make: no it wasn't that good, but is it really as bad as every makes it seem? My read was that he finally got fed up with the constant criticism and bit back at the reporter... that was just my take. It could be i'm wrong.
  20. From KC star: Top QB recruit Gabbert hasn’t said yes to Mizzou yet By MIKE DeARMOND The Kansas City Star COLUMBIA | Blaine Gabbert, poised to be the No. 1-ranked player in the state of Missouri and among the top three quarterbacks in the nation’s 2008 recruiting class, isn’t yet ready to say he’ll be a Missouri Tiger. “I really couldn’t tell you an exact time or a date,” the 6-5 senior-to-be out of Ballwin’s Parkway West High, told The Star on Saturday about when he may commit to a school. According to Rivals.com, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Alabama are at the top of Gabbert’s list. A lot of MU fans were hoping Gabbert would say he would be a Tiger on Saturday at Mizzou’s annual Black & Gold Spring Game. He just grinned and kept any decision to himself. “I’ll know when I’m ready,” Gabbert said. College coaches all over the country — Kansas and Kansas State have also shown interest — have wooed Gabbert, a prime dual-threat quarterback. Last season as a junior he hit 119 of 231 passes for 1,523 yards and 20 touchdowns, with seven interceptions. He also ran 59 times for 458 yards, 7.8 yards per carry, and for eight touchdowns. Last Saturday, following Gabbert’s attendance at Nebraska’s spring game, the Internet erupted in speculation that Gabbert would be a Cornhusker. On Saturday, it was the same on Web sites about Missouri. “Rumors fly up every day, and you’ve just got to take it,” Gabbert said. “You’ve just got to try to make it fun.” _____________________________________________________________________________________ i put this up because it relates to a rumor i heard on another board. The poster is pretty well respected, but again this is just rumor so take it for what it's worth. Supposedly, the MU coaches were very worried by the fact that Gabbert didn't committ at their spring game. Word is that while he is a dual threat QB, he's looking towards the pros and wants in an offense that will best prepare him for that. Gabbert is a little tentative about MU for this reason, and may be waiting to see how their season goes. Unless he likes what he sees, the decision will be between NU and Alabama.
  21. a poster on another board had a pretty good take on the debate about NU vs MU for the division. Overall, we should be stronger than we were last year. Meanwhile, MU for all apperances comes back about the same (no major upgrades on O and a lot of losses to an unspectacular D). There's only one thing that really changes in their favor from last year to this year: that the game is in Columbia. This isn't to say that MU can't do it. if you look at are records from last year, we were 6-2 while they were 4-4. if you flip the meeting between us, then we are both 5-3 with them holding the tie breaker. Given our struggles at Mizzou, it's not outrageous to say they can do it. But i first look at who is the better team, and based on the above, i'd say that is us.
  22. whoa! i beg to differ! listen to the kids that look at NU and they talk about growing up watching this team dominate and the tradition of great running backs and linemen. you think these kids aren't impressed before they get to high school? wrong, the whole thing starts well before then and they do look up to the legendary players and coaches from the past. We seem to be in on and landing a good amount of the kids that grew up watching us, i'm not concerned about them. Do you think that ex-players on the field would help us land guys at another tier like Clausen? i don't. I've never heard any recruit say that this was a factor in their decision for not picking us. And i don't see recruiting as underperforming right now either. i don't believe BC is above criticism, but recruiting isn't an area where it's deserved imo. i don't see the merit in second guessing the staff over this decision based on recruiting. Sugalean brings up another issue with this, but again i'm not that worried. i have experience with this of sorts, and in my experience ex players on the bench or sidelines doesn't help much if at all and may even hurt at times. Mostly i wasn't aware they were present, but the times i was it was more a distraction that anything. Others, of course, might have a different experience. But, I doubt either way it made a huge difference to the outcome of the game or season. i'll say my piece on this one more time and be done with it. it's not a make or break issue one way or another. i can see pros and cons and neither makes that big a difference imo. if BC thinks it's not worth it or is not a good idea, then i'm fine with that decision. if he were to change his mind, i'd be fine with that too. The issue just isn't important enough to care about, imo.
  23. On the subject of Ex players on the sidelines, it's a non issue imo. Maybe it would help with recruiting, but i don't think it's a major benefit. In all honesty, how many current recruits (outside of NE) would know of many of our ex players? A coaching staff should have the right to make certain decisions on how to run their team, and i'm fine leaving this one up to them. Seems to me it doesn't make much of a difference one way or another anyhow.
  24. only one Int - that may actually be a step forward...
