  1. That's partly due to filling up early. In that situation, you can only lose players and never gain them. Creates a situation where the only change that can happen is negative. And when you are talking about 27-30 kids, it's really hard not to have any changes at all.
  2. i've heard a similar rumor. If this turns out to be true, then i think the staff does have some blame in this if they didn't make our situation clear to him. On the other hand, if it were explained that we have a significant problem at DB and need a lot of bodies because of it, then it's all on him. Either way, he comes off as being scarred of competition. I don't think we are missing out on much.
  3. I don't see Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, and Pete Carrol losing kids at the last minute... those are also consistent BCS teams in this decade and each has one a NC. there's a lot more going on in this equation than just the coaches. Plus those schools do "lose" guys. they are just able to replace them much easier.
  4. There's something odd about losing top DB prospects the last three years now, but how can you honestly put this on anyone other than Ross. He told us he was coming, and led us to believe that up until the morning of signing day... This whole thing speaks to his character, not the ability of the coaching staff imo.
  5. "Wow" factor? Are you kidding me? We took Dillard out of their backyard. We ripped a hot JuCo QB from them when they had no QB's for the coming year and we had an almost given as a starter in Sam Keller. Oklahomo is fresh off of several BCS games and we haven't had one in forever (5 years?) Oklahomo is closer to Texas which is where he is from. I cannot believe you just said our coaching doesn't have that "WOW" factor..........UNBELIEVABLE. Are you a closet Stoops fan? I cannot believe you just posted that...I'm speachless, I think I'm gonna go puke now. Yeah thats it a closet Stoops fan! The "WOW" factor I was gearing towards is how coaches WIN kids over!! Not too mention the possibility of being a potential first year starter. If you wanna talk about BCS crap then explain why teams like Pittsburgh or South Carolina are AHEAD yeah that's right I said AHEAD of us in the recruiting game???? Can't use the excuse of BCS games there! Not too mention that both of those schools landed recruits out of Florida, which the last time I checked were NOT close to either of these two states! Also, explain "Oklahomo is fresh off of several BCS games and we haven't had one in forever (5 years?) ". Last time I checked we played 2 BCS teams last year. (USC and OU) I am however assuming that you meant BCS Bowl games. Rivals has our class ranked 10th (after Lewis is removed) and we certainly were not the 10th best team this past season. Imo, Lewis (as well as David Ross, Lucky, etc.) never even considers us unless our coaches have some "WOW" factor. It's not wise to formulate a general opinion off one incident. Should do so off the class as a whole, and this is still a pretty good class.
  6. Keller, Ganz, Lee, Witt, and who else? Beau? well, what do you want him to say... a former Heisman hopeful, a bum knee, a true frosh and two paper weights?
  7. i guess it's open to interpretation, so here is mine: I don't see it as a take off on the "it's not wether you win or lose, but how you play the game". That's really about sportsmanship, which this doesn't say to me. This is more about the thrill of the hunt. Now that i'm past my playing days (bball) the thing i miss most is not walking of the court after a win, but rather the act of competing against another player and team for a game and seeing how you stack up. I don't miss hitting a shot over a defener, i miss trying to set him up for a play and then executing it... and then him coming back and trying to do the same to me on the other end. I don't miss the times we knew we were gonna win late in the 4th quarter, i miss the times it was close and the suprises of what was coming on the next play. One of the best memories i have is playing a pickup game some years latter and having to guard this guy who was shooting lights out... it was me and him back and forth for most of the game... couldn't afford to sleep on him for a second or he'd drain a shot inside the half court line... Of course we won, the fondest memories are the wins. But it isn't winning that i remeber, it was how competitive that was and how hard i had to work for us to win that game, and the lucky bounces that went our way. The fact i was up to the challenge that night is what was so great. It's not about winning (or losing), it's not about scoring points or getting interviewed in the town paper. It's the competition that i miss most. And in that sense i like the quote.
  8. This is what stands out the most (to me anyway). Zac Taylor- a JUCO qb, worked out well for us. Harrison Beck- wash out. josh freeman- benedict arnold Patrick Witt- go get em buddy, Zac Lee- injured Juco recruit, wont know how he pans out because he hasnt stepped onto the field yet. Joe Ganz, Jordan Adams, Beau Davis- never see the field as for all the other players, we havent really seen how a lot of the high school guys Callahan have developed because its too early to tell yet, and in all fairness, you shouldnt really judge if a player is a bust or a success if they havent used up all their eligibility. Players can go from six feet under on the depth chart to a starter in a year (Cory Ross is just one example) so who knows what is going to happen. yes, until cally takes a talented high school qb and makes something out of him, this part of our recrutiing will always be suspect......year 4 coming up and no results yet..... No results... Didn't our QB just get named Big 12 POY by the coaches and writers... Really? No results at all? Why is Freeman on there? BC never coached him, he was never even a player at NU. Don't even know if that kid is gonna be a failure, but if he is it won't be because of this staff. Seems like some posters are pouring on the haterade.
  9. lol... ain't that the truth. I have a hard time thinking this was some conspiracy from the begining to end up at USC. 'SC's kicker didn't have his accident till after Congdon asked to leave. This is more like coincidence than anything else. He may have been unhappy with kicking in Lincoln (i wasn't all that thrilled about him doing it either), so he used his unlce's situation as a nice way to step aside. Now an opportunity comes along at USC where he can be close to his family, so he takes it. There's no big story here imo. the only thing close is that he mislead the fans a little with his Uncle's situation, but i don't really care that much.
  10. Has anyone heard of this kid out of NE? There's a rumor on the ESPN boards that his grey shirting. Here is the rivals link, for those that have access: http://nebraska.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=60791
  11. my take on the guy is IF he was as good as Stuart......he WOULDN'T have had to split playing time...he still isn't playing like a 5 star guy.....not that he is bad, he just isn't THAT good.... Not quite the whole story though. Lucky was a true soph and Bjax a (redshirt?) junior - one who played himself into the NFL this season at that. Does this speak ill of Bjax that he had to split carries with Lucky? Not to me in the slightest. I think it means Lucky is not that far behind Bjax, and Bjax was pretty good. It may be that Lucky turns out to be overrated, but he may also deliver on his ranking. His development from frosh to soph season was huge. How can we say he won't continue to improve and be great his last two seasons?
  12. i think some people confuse being overhyped with being a bust when they talk about Lucky. That's my guess anyway.
  13. Crabtree was on 1620 yesterday talking about the drop. While Crabtree said he argued for Paul for some reason those above him seem to think Paul has reached his maximum skill level. Yet they don't seem to be taking into account in college he can still get stronger and faster with the help of Nebraska's strength trainers. i'm not all that familiar with how these recruiting services do their things, but it's always seemed to me that defining a players "ceiling" is the most ambiguous and most opinionated part of the analysis. It seems to be used more as justification for ratings, rather than reasons for determining the rating. Like in this situation. Suddenly Paul's "ceiling" got so much smaller over the course of this season?
  14. i'm mixed on this issue. i hear what both sides are saying. Most of the arguments favoring paying athletes only pertain to the football programs at major universities, which is a fraction of NCAA athletes. However, their are kids that are being exploited. the NCAA and universities are raking it in by the bucket load on cfb, while many of these kids are known to have next to no chance at earning a degree. Maybe paying the kids isn't right, but the way things are now isn't right either. The source of the problem imo is at the professional level, not the collegiate level. The NBA and NFL treat college like their minor leagues. But the NCAA can't pass any rules about how they conduct business. And with the money coming in, they aren't inclined to change the status quo any how.
  15. Landon, starting isn't the only way to contribute to a team. I expect these guys to have an impact on the field next year, but to say that they will step in and be imediately far and away better than the players we have is to ignore everything besides athleticism in these cases. Plus, you need to accept that a lot of the guys you keep blasting aren't terrible, more that they are average or descent. I'm not a big fan of Ruud myself, but he was on the all conference two deep. Though he drives me crazy at times, he certainly isn't terrible.
  16. Coach should start the players that make the best team. Are there obviously better players on the bench at each of these positions? wouldn't mind sitting Jones either, but best case scenario is that Bowman comes back and Grixby moves over and he sees less snaps. Thenarse himself has said he is not ready, and that he is getting beat repeatedly in practice. Who are the recievers that are gonna take all the snaps away from those recievers? What lb is gonna be able to replace everything that Ruud brings to the team? I'm all for putting better players on the field, but your being a little overboard wtih saying all these guys should sit or else it means the staff sucks. And you're way off with Grixby. The guy has pretty good coverage and rarely is he beaten on a play. The real problem is that where as he should be covering teams #2 recievers, injuries and lack of depth forced him to be covering teams #1 guys week after week. Unfortunately, he is too small to be able to take those guys on. Him starting, in and of itself is not a bad thing.
  17. He's also instate. That may play a role in it. I've heard he is grey shirting. How does this work? Is he guaranteed a scholly next year, and if so which class does it count towards?
  18. The three lineman we've taken in this class total about 952 lbs (give or take). Thats nearly half a ton. Doesn't mean anything on it's own, but it's fun being able to talk about our line situations in tonnage
  19. as long as he demands the same level from himself as he does from others, i don't think it will be a problem.
  20. Are we looking at Amie as a TE? Looks like he'd make a good WR prospect, but at TE he looks rather small to me.
  21. '07 schedule looks like it could be a tough one. But USC is likely to loose Jarrett, and possibly more. Several times this season Jarrett looked to be carrying 'SC. There a lot of questions out there for next year, and we aren't the only team with things to answer. I say lets get through spring ball and into pre season camp before we start worry about any apocalypse.
  22. i believe sacks count as negative rushing yards, so be careful with just using total game stats. Here is a link to the play by play for the game. may take some time to sort through, but it should give you what you want. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?c...ameId=270010158 one downside is that it doesn't identify screen plays, which some people count as runs.
  23. Most coaches call plays based on how the game is going, the idea of scripting is just to establish a few things from the begining and maybe settle the players into the game. i'm awfully skeptical that anyone could predict that deep into a game, and to my knowledge no one does this. i think this would be micro managing too much, but others might feel different. I assume the scripted series is also practiced so one couldn't implement more than a couple; i.e., the openner and one for the end of a game where the team is behind for example. Yeah, you are probably right. Would be very time consuming for the staff to create several package scripts week to week, and wouldn't be a very efficient use of time to practice several of these sets where many may not even end up being used. Probably better to practice all the plays and then run them as the game unfolds.
  24. I understand Weiss going for it a little bit more. LSU has a pretty good O and ND's defense is the teams weak point. Can understand Weiss trying to keep his D off the field. On the other hand, Auburn's offense isn't anything special this year and our defense is pretty good. For this reason, i don't agree with BC going for the fake. But i can respect both as gutsy calls.
  25. His numbers may be comparable to those of other BCS qbs, but i wonder if this is possibly misleading. For one i can think of the Hawaii qb, and i'm guessing his numbers are comparable. only reason i know about Hawaii is b/c of the press he has gotten, makes me wonder how many other "comparable" numbers are out there. Individual numbers never tell the whole story either. Just for example, Troy Smith was mostly successful b/c of what he did running the football in addition to his throwing. Quite a few of these guys may have sat a lot during the season as well, which would kinda skew things. Sure pick a QB that had a record breaking NCAA season like Brennan did at Hawaii. that was sort of my point. Being in a BCS isn't the gold standard for being a QB. That shows how good a team is, not how good the QB is/was.
