  1. It's almost hard to believe people are still taking the Heisman seriously. What a joke it is. Nine out of ten times it simply goes to the best QB or RB on a top five team. In fact, they should change their official explanation from "most outstanding player in collegiate football" to "best quarterback or running back on a top five team". It would actually be a great a award if it actually was given to the most outstanding player. They should have a small committee of maybe a dozen or so people, who actually watch the sport religiously and follow film of all positions (people like Phil Steele), to pick the truly most outstanding season. That would be an award worth following.
  2. Honestly I don't really see the point in not scheduling at least two decent BCS teams every year, if not more. As much as I'd love to believe otherwise, I don't see Nebraska as a national title contender anytime soon. One of the main reasons to avoid playing solid teams is for national title contenders to avoid a costly OOC upset that would hurt their chance of finishing first or second come December. Since Nebraska's big goal in the next several years will be winning the Big 12, they can afford to go 2-2 in out of conference games. Plus, the respect gained and the excitement (for the fans) of playing better teams is, IMO, worth it in the long run, even if it means an occasional tough loss. I'm not asking to play the USCs and the Floridas of the world all the time, but at least some respectable BCS schools, or the cream of the non-BCS teams (Boise State, Utah, etc.) would be nice. Although I know many big schools have a higher creampuff ratio than us, I still find our schedules in the near future unacceptable. To me, teams like ULL, Idaho, Wyoming and Western Kentucky have no business filling more than a single slot on the schedule in any given season. In reality, those types of teams usually fill 3 of the 4 non-conference spots. That's ridiculous to me. That means we could go 3-5 in Big 12 play and still get to a bowl game. How many people would feel good about going to a bowl game with three conference wins and three wins against teams like Idaho? Like I said, I don't mind one warm-up game a season. After that, I wanna see some respectable teams. Teams like Wisconsin, Northwestern, Boise State, Auburn, Iowa, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Boston College, North Carolina, etc. All this said, I will give credit for some of the teams scheduled several years down the road. 2012-2016 all currently have two respectable teams. So the future does look better in this regard.
  3. Also, can't wait for this... it's gonna be a great season. (Although, why is the VT facemask white?)
  4. It wouldn't surprise me to see the same thing as last year happen in the Big 12 South, only with Oklahoma State replacing Texas Tech. I can see all three teams going 11-1 and splitting their head-to-head games. It's hard to imagine any of the North teams beating any of those three, although upsets usually do end up happening at one point or another.
  5. I'm going to play spoiler here: By virtue of "reverse engineering" his preseason Top 40 on his website, I can say a few days early that Steele ranks Nebraska 22nd in his preseason predictions. He also thinks the Huskers will be in the Big 12 Championship Game despite some of the shortcomings. In any event, gotta just hope he's right with his big 12 predictions two years in a row! Here's the Nebraska page: http://www.philsteele.com/online/2009Top40/22NEBRASKA.pdf
  6. Let's play guess the top nine... 10. Ole Miss (already announced) 9. Virginia Tech -1 8. Ohio State 7. Alabama 6. Penn State 5. Oklahoma State +4 4. USC 3. Texas 2. Oklahoma 1. Florida
  7. No, I think it has more to do with the fact that Steele generally has the most accurate preseason rankings. Athlon actually does pretty well too, second only to Steele over the past decade.
  8. The article doesn't even have a picture of the vehicle? Weak.
  9. He has been ordered to wear his football helmet everywhere he goes from now on. This is to avoid any potential head injuries from all the fans throwing stones.
  10. Sounds boring... why don't you play online?
  11. Actually they're "giant rubber balls", not footballs.
  12. Yup. We won 7-0 in 1988. The teams combined for 3 completions and 61 yards passing...
  13. Well, close enough. It was 8! Unbelievable. I mean, I know a lot of the Big 8 teams didn't pass much back then... but 8, in 3 games?!? It was the 80s, not the 20s...
  14. Without looking it up, give me your best guess: From '87 through '89 (three games), how many combined completions did Colorado have against us? Is it September yet?
  15. If it weren't for meaningless drivel, there wouldn't be much to do between now and September.
  16. I just don't believe that anyone within the program (Bo, TO, etc.) would have made the decision to keep this private without making sure it was perfectly legal to do so. That would just be really really dumb. And so I stand by my original three predictions: 1. Nothing will happen to the University or the football program 2. Nothing will happen to Cody Glenn (aside from maybe a private slap on the wrist) 3. We will never know for certain what actually happened
  17. A ot don't want to admit it but this does affect Husker Football. I'm sorry but if everything comes out every party including University is not gonna walk away clean from this situation. I doubt its gonna be anything serious like resignations or probation but its gonna be a pretty big credibility hit. If the statutory rape story is true, what did the University do improperly?
  18. Cody Glenn hasn't been a Husker for approximately 170 days. Why on earth are these hundreds of topics devoted to this not in the former huskers forum? The guy obviously is embarrassed to talk about whatever it is that happened and would prefer to let it go. So he made a dumb mistake and lied about it, thinking maybe he'd get away with it. Nothing is going to happen. Maybe he gets a slap on the wrist from the Redskins, but other than, that... why is this still being discussed? Nothing bad is going to happen to the University or Cody and we will never know what actually happened (for certain). Now could we talk about Husker Football now?
  19. So what are the chances Joey's still around to compete in the preseason games? That would be fun to watch. EDIT: After reading Ballz's post, I think I can answer my own question with: somewhere around 0.3%
  20. Jen and Fro, I think you might be overemphasizing the importance of player development. The fact is, a whole lot of whether someone has NFL type talent is determined the day he's conceived (aka genetics). That's not to say hard work, determination, film study, weight training, etc. doesn't factor in, but the biggest thing is if the kid has the physical tools. Callahan probably wasn't a very good player developer, but I don't think that makes a whole lot of difference on whether his kids are drafted in the NFL. Look at the kids that are made into great college players who accomplish big things during their college careers, but never really get much of a look in the pros (Graham Harrell might be a good example). Mike Leach seems to be pretty good at player development, but that didn't seem to do much to help Harrell in the NFL draft. On the other hand, you have the case of Josh Freeman, who had an absolutely horrible coach in charge of him (Prince) and most would agree did not have a great college career. And yet he goes in the first round! My point being, four to five years in college football generally does not make or break whether the player is talented enough to get a serious chance in the NFL. So the fact that Callahan's players are not getting drafted is more of a sign that he isn't a good talent scout/recruiter than a sign that he isn't a good player developer.
  21. Maybe TO is a closet Muslim (and therefore has no morals)... hmmm...
  22. So whoever reported him to Tampa Bay was just completely effing with us?
