  1. It was a good post. It explained in detail why Turner would be a good Coach, ESPECIALLY at Nebraska. I put my blinders away many years ago. I also live in a realistic world where my ENTIRE life does not revolve around the Cornhuskers. In saying that I love the Cornhuskers..win or lose but I also enjoy what I have. Turner Gill is the type of football Coach I want to lead my team. Pellini would also be a nice fit. I'd love to have them both back together which I don't really see happening. I also respect Dr. Tom enough to do whats right. I'll let him choose and respect his decision. If you call that blinders than IMO it show sthat your a new comer to Nebraska football and don't really understand what it means to be a Husker. Ask any former Husker athlete of the last 25 years ..Defensive or Offensive what Turner Gill means to them and this program. I'll bet you won't get many complaints about him becoming Head Coach. Besides some of us need blinders so we don't read all the BS spread from people who have their Eyes Wide Shut! Mouth wide open..and Brain in Neutral. IMO Nebraska is LUCKY to have at least 2 fine men wanting, willing and able to lead this team. I agree 100% with everything, EVERYTHING, you said here. Thanks for saying what I wish I could have said so succinctly.
  2. Well Snork, that makes you a dork. Tom Osborne is the greatest coach of all time in any sport. Period. To say or even think otherwise is blasphemy. And even if he completely failed in these tasks as an AD in the years ahead (which he won't), this is about Greatest COACH of all time, not AD.
  3. I love that one! Yeah that one is the pick of the litter . . . so far.
  4. After thousands and thousands of posts calling for these guys heads and WORSE, you're gonna bag on the idea of having fun with some signs. Come on Ayatollah Bill Callahan has a nice ring to it! Some levity around here right now is not a bad idea. Just what the doctor ordered.
  5. Just because there can never be enough, here's a couple more: Axe Bill Callahan After Bill Callahan (picture of a rainbow or something) Ayatollah Bill Callahan About to Boot Callahan Always Bad Callahan Callahan: A Bad Coach Geez, we could give every fan in the stadium a different sign.
  6. I am not worried about Rose. But it looks like now might be a chance to get rid of this buffoon. The timing just happens to coincide with the Callahan debacle. And with Tom at the helm, I am not really worried about the real worries. Thus, I can kick this Rose dog when he's down. Rosie, you need to limit yourself to baseball and otherwise stay off the radio waves.
  7. Uh no he doesn't but Rose has got to go.
  8. as mediocre as rose's. to call Rose's broadcasts mediocre is . . . well . . . definitely looking through rose colored glasses. Tom didn't make any commitments to keeping Rose around so Rose can definitely go NOW.
  9. Since at least the Ball State game I think we all knew it would come to this. We've been through a lot, a few more weeks isn't going to kill us. Keeping your word is damn important. It's the first and most important step to restoring the order. Yeah things are bad. But firing these coaches a couple weeks sooner is not going to make a big difference either way. It only would make Tom look bad in the coaching fraternity and say that his word means nothing. Then how does Tom convince new coaching and player recruits that his word means anything to them in these critical days ahead. Tom is taking the right and only acceptable approach. Tom has been around the block once or twice.
  10. Osborne is thinking long term about what is best for the program. How this season ends up or the next recruiting class fares are not our main problems now. Patience.
  11. I don't like Rose. I could add some adjectives of the negative sort but if I got started down that track I wouldn't be able to stop. I've been listening since Bremser and Rose it the worst of them all since. IMO even worse than Swain. Swain was boring but at least an even keel boring. There are many things I don't like about Rose but what I just can't stand is that when a big play or a critical play happens, as in when you most want to know what is going on, the guy starts yelling, which would be okay, if you could understand what he is saying. So then you're sitting there wondering what just happened. Was it Rose going all hyperbole over a 1 yard gain? Did it go for a touchdown? Was it an interception? a fumble? You just sit there waiting until Adrian recaps what happened once Rose has shut up. As far as Rose the man, maybe he is different off the air, but whether it be weekday mornings on KFAB or during the game, his arrogance and condescension toward others makes me want to puke. It wouldn't be so difficult to take if this guy wasn't such a loser. I probably shouldn't be so critical though. Other than passing through a room or store where his mouth is blaring, I stopped listening to his Husker broadcasts about three years ago. See no reason listening to a guy I can't stand and can't understand when the game play is on the line. Rose has got to go!
  12. I can't really argue with you comparing coaches and determining who's better or worse. I just am not qualified. But I would just suggest that we had better take a wide look and not exclude groups from consideration. Whether they be: --former players and coaches --newer up and coming coaches --"proven" headcoaches --hell maybe even NFL coaches (actually this is one group that's tempting to exclude These are risky days for NU football. While I hope and have great confidence in Tom, one of the possible outcomes no matter who he hires in his best professional judgement, is that this thing could fail miserably again. These are risky days for NU. The university needs us as loyal fans more than ever. I am probably preaching to the choir but again we need to all stick together no matter what. Hopefully good times but we had better be prepared just in case.
  13. Any coach we hire is a risk. There is no way to totally eliminate it. Past performance is no guarantee.
  14. I trust T. O. know better than I to make a determination on Gill. But by the sentence above alone... we should have never hired Tom as head coach. Gill has more success and time now than Tom had when he was named head coach. Gill is in the running. Of course, it all depends on who else gets considered and how Tom sizes them up. But Gill should not be denied out of the box.
  15. If it were my decision, I would give a slight nod to Gill over Pelini. For those of you who say anybody but Gill, I flat out don't understand where you're coming from. Enlighten us as to why you say this. Something more than "I heard he was lazy in college" or "I just don't feel he's ready yet." And how about something more than "we don't want to limit the search to only former Husker coaches and players." The fact that no one seems to come up with a concrete reason for this "No consideration should be given to Gill" attitude is puzzling. Gill has demonstrated on every level he has coached at thus far that he is a great coach. The fact that he has a history at Nebraska doesn't negate his accomplishments and acumen. He deserves consideration if in fact he wants the job. In the end, we can all have confidence that Tom will make what he believes is the best decision for Nebraska. And his best decision, in all probability, will be much better than anything any of us can come up with. He won't play favorites nor deny viable candidates consideration.
  16. Maybe I am missing something but I have not seen anyone one who is supporting Gill to get his due consideration say that Osborne should limit himself to Gill. What I have heard is that Gill deserves to be among those considered. Like many others on the board here, I don't pretend to know how to best select a head coach. I trust that to Osborne. But I do think Gill has very positive attributes that put him in the running. And if after T.O. considered everything and everyone, I would not be surprised at all if T. O. would choose Gill. Finally, I have been reading for many days all these posts from folks on this board and others saying point blank, end of discussion (or so it seemed to me) that Gill should not be considered. I have been just dumbfounded that the overwhelming majority of those vocalizing were "No Way" Gill. So thank you to everyone who has presented a pro Gill viewpoint here in this thread to go along with the other viewpoints. I have had a great amount of respect for Gill since his playing days more as a man of character than a coach. In my original comments, I was referring to his character and his teaching of character when I said he understand NU tradition. IMO, that is Tom's greatest legacy to this program. It does my soul good to see there are others who place both of these men in high regard as well. I have confidence that Gill would surprise, apparently quite a few people, with better than expected performance as a Nebraska head coach. Is he the best candidate available? I don't know. But he should be placed among those considered.
  17. a couple points in response to points made above. Sam Keller: He really impresses me with his maturity and character during the post-game press conferences. He's a gamer and a leader. I just feel sorry for him coming to Nebraska at this time. The reason Sam Keller has not impressed people as much as we expected is that he has the same coaching staff bringing him down as do the rest of the players. Callahan and crew have demonstrated an uncanny ability to make players underachieve. They overcoach and mess these talents up. Where Keller has excelled, albeit against lesser teams this year, is during two minute drills where he can just play without interference from the coach's stupid play calling. This offense take Keller out of rhythm and I think it saps his confidence. Joe Ganz: Callahan may be doing him a favor by not playing him. This means less exposure to Callahan messing Ganz up. Ganz may still be salvageable to the new coaches next year. Osborne taking too long/being culpable/not a single man miracle worker: Tom is taking a long term view of the program. He is not claiming to be able to fix this thing overnight. It may be necessary to not only sacrifice the rest of this year but maybe next year too in order to create a long term sustainable long term path to success. And like others I have faith that Tom knows far more about collegiate athletic programs than the rest of us on this board combined. Infallible? No. Knowlegable enough to get the job done and ignore the ignorant masses? Hell yes!
  18. No Way he would come to NU..at least i dont think so but who am i to say Not only Meyer --- but no way any established coach at any school that has sniffed the top 25 the past few years would even remotely consider NU. NU is, I am afraid to say, not a major program anymore and is a fishbowl that most any coach would avoid. It is not a top 25 coaching job. So, do not expect a major coach to come here. the only hope to attract anyone that is proven is to have a disproportionate amount of $ thrown their way. Sort of like Alabama did. Yeah, Nebraska isn't a top 25 school anymore...kinda like Miami, Notre Dame and Florida State aren't top 25 programs anymore....Or back in the 90's when USC and Oklahoma (before Carroll and Stoops) weren't top 25 programs. Please, Nebraska is clearly a top 25 program and will be again assuming that TO brings in the right HC (and definitely not be Turner Gill). Why not Turner Gill? What has he done to be automatically disqualified by so many on these boards? The man should definitely be interviewed. Not because he happened to play here but for the reasons below. First, look at what he has done at Buffalo. He inherited facilities and talent on what has been argued by ,many to be the worst program in D1 and immediately had those guys overachieving. He has those guys believing in themselves, the program and definitely in the coaching staff. Compare that to Callahan who takes five star recruits and gets them to underachieve. So on this first test, Turner is much more like Osborne and Devaney than Callahan and I suspect better than what a lot of other coaches could do at Buffalo. As such he has more head coaching experience than Bo. And yes, I think Bo should be interviewed too. My point is that saying Gill doesn't have enough experience is not valid. If it is, then Bo should not be interviewed either. Next Gill does have a lot of years in coaching. The man is 45 years old. Some have said maybe in a few years after he has more years of experience. Well how much more does he need and if you wait too long he'll only have a few years before retirement to give. He was a good position coach while he was here and coaching Crouch, Frost, and Tommie too (I think) certainly can't damage his credibility can it? He has Texas connections for recruiting. That must count for something. He was given administrative duties while here as well I believe as assistant head coach with Frank. Or some title like that anyway. Finally, if he does pass the muster in all the other areas that Tom Osborne would require, then his experience as a former coach and player at one of college footballs most prestigious instituations SHOULD be considered. He is charismatic to his players and given his Nebraska player bloodlines, the state could rally around him like few others if he passes the interview requirements. It would be foolish to write this talent off just because he played at NU. Yes we don't want to pull another John Blake like Oklahoma did. But Turner Gill is 45 with a lot more experience and more of a track record than Blake had at age 34 when he was hired. All I am saying is give Gill a chance too. I have followed him closely since he started at Buffalo. Given what he has had to work with there, he has been very impressive in every aspect of the Head Coaching job. He has inspired the players, his coaching staff and the Buffalo community by demonstrating charisma and also character that reminds me of the man I bet he learned some of it from: Tom Osborne. Some of you are very adamant about not wanting Gill. If it is fear of commiting another Blake. That is valid but it doesn't automatically disqualify Gill from consideration. Further, just because Blake didn't work out at Oklahoma doesn't mean that a former coach/player here will never work. If that is the case Bob Devaney should have never hired Tom Osborne. And Tom should have been a complete failure as Blake was at Oklahoma. If Gill wants an interview, he definitely deserve a real and serious interview. And I would not be surprised that under a full and comprehensive review, Gill may be the best man for the job. In my opinion it is between Gill and Pelini. If it is a tie, Gill gets my tiebreaker vote (if I had one) due to character, experience and yes, a history and understanding of Nebraska football tradition.
