  1. Just thinking about Brett Maher's great year and that reminded me of Aaron Green's situation. Maher is a great example for anyone sitting behind a better player. It sucks to ride the bench, but you have to earn your way on the field. Who knew when Alex Henery was demolishing kicking records and otherwise looking awesomtastic the last couple of years that we had Maher, who so far looks like Henery's clone out there, sitting behind him? Green may be the next Great Husker Running Back... but he's still an underclassmen. And there is no shame in losing reps to a guy like Burkhead. So hopefully Aaron and any other guy looking for meaningful snaps looks no further than Maher for an example of how to handle the situation. Wait your turn, work hard, and when it's your turn, give 'em hell.
  2. Mostly I was just having fun reposting the bona fides of 1995 Nebraska. That never gets old.
  3. 1995 Nebraska begs to differ. To expand on that, 1995 Nebraska beat: Final AP ranks: #2 Florida #5 Colorado #7 Kansas State #9 Kansas Average Margin of Victory: 31 points. Combined record of these four opponents: 42-7 (42-4 minus losses to Nebraska)
  4. That's exactly what it sounds like, and it's not fooling anyone. JoePa knew which way the wind was blowing LONG ago. Well before he did this with the house.
  5. But did the Rhodes review board make the right choice? I get that he can apply next year, but I think they would want to work with the guy.
  6. Is anyone else having problems understanding what I'm saying in this thread?
  7. I assume you directed that at me. Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't want TO "fired" in 92 but I sure was fed up as hell watching that crappy offense get stone walled against Miami to the tune of 0-22 among others. Tell me you were happy with that. Whatever........TO was DAMN lucky to get a great group of talented players assembled in 1994 and 1995 but don't sit here and tell me 20 years later that you saw that coming! Hog wash. Sounds like you are the perfect revisionist. And please don't build strawman arguments and put words in my mouth: I'm NOT "looking at Pelini in a vacuum". Don't know what exactly you mean by that. All I'm saying is that we need progress from year to year. If we go 8-4, is that progress? If we go 9-3 with a crap.com bowl. Is that progress? Sorry, 1 extra win against DirectionalKentuckyU does not equal progress. There's a reason every one and their dog picked NU with at the very least make the B1GC. Sounds like you're using your revisionist talents to make this potential 8-4/9-3 performance sound good. Sorry - not working with me. Now who's putting words in whose mouth? Where in the world did you come up with that? Everyone reading this thread gets that you don't know what I mean about viewing Pelini in a vacuum. That's your problem - you don't get it. That's why I'm trying to tell you what you should be focusing on. All you want to do is look very narrowly at the record, or at your personal ambiguous version of "progress," and that's foolish. Is 8-4 progress? Depends on the context. Putting that record in the context of this season, what we were (sober assessment, not some pie-in-the-sky dream scenario) and where we end up, paints a very different picture than simply looking at the W/L column and griping about it.
  8. McMurphyCBS Brett McMurphy Penn State official Twitter site @penn_state says "There have been no discussions about the Joe Paterno statue"
  9. Unfortunately "both sides" is considered the Democrat Party and the Republican Party. Yeah they own our political system through the money they command from corporate donors, but they are herdly the only two sides that need to be considered. In fact they seem to be the same side that usually and conveniently seem to compromise in around the same place. Depends on what you mean by "considered." Since they are currently in power, and make the decisions, they jointly shoulder the lion's share of the blame. Other discussions can be had about third parties, the culpability of the electorate, etc, but those are cumbersome arguments that don't solve the immediate problem, which these parties have the opportunity to do.
  10. So you advocated firing Osborne in 1992, yes? Your arguments fall apart when put in context. All you want is Pelini out, without any thought of the ramifications of the decision. You're looking at Pelini in a vacuum, without taking into account any extraneous factors.
  11. How many top ten teams did they beat in those regular seasons? Hint... the number looks like a doughnut. Sagarin's 1997 SOS has Nebraska at #42 and Michigan at #36. So their schedule was, according to Sag, slightly tougher. However, his final ranking put us #1 and Michigan #4, behind Florida St. and Florida. The ratings for the top five were: 1. Nebraska - 104.99 (13-0) 2. Florida State - 101.96 (11-1) 3. Florida - 99.76 (10-2) 4. Michigan - 98.2 (12-0) 5. Tennessee - 97.37 (11-2)
  12. I am in my 40s. I can clearly remember seasons as far back as the 1970s. I don't care if you're a "big Bo fan" or not, firing a coach going 8-4 in the circumstances of this season, after back-to-back ten-win seasons, is moronic. I would ensure another Callahan-esque hire, because this program would be toxic to any coach after we fired a 9-3 coach and an 8-4 coach in a period of eight years. I didn't say I was 'satisfied' with 8-4, or that anyone should be happy with it. Read my post again. I said that would be zero reason to fire Pelini.
  13. greggdoyelcbs Gregg Doyel I have 2 students telling me they were told by PSU profs that Joe Pa statue will go down. Is that "news"? No. It's me, relating what I heard greggdoyelcbs Gregg Doyel Last update: PSU professors have told students it's a done deal: Paterno statue going down over Thanksgiving
  14. Ryan Budget...ring a bell? The Joe Paterno "I did the minimum legal requirement" budget? Yeah, I am familiar with that lone, half-hearted attempt at a budget. What the Republicans should be doing is, sleeves rolled up, working their asses off to formulate a budget that both sides can agree on, and if that one doesn't work, write another one, and another one, and another one. Failure to do this, by both sides, is criminal.
  15. Exactly. I doubt anybody posting in this thread really believes the fringe BS that comes out of Fox or MSNBC (or whoever the anti-Fox is). But if that's all you hear, day after day, you're going to regurgitate it without fail. You have nothing else on which to fall back.
  16. I don't get news from any specific source. I most definitely do NOT get news from any of the three major networks, from CNN, from Fox, from MSNBC or any of the more left- or right-wing papers. I focus mostly on Reuters, the AP, and other generic print. Getting your news from a broad range of sources is a better way to ensure you're not getting brainwashed by the agenda of whatever side your preferred source leans toward. It's not perfect, but it's a far sight better than watching only one or two sources. And frankly, I couldn't stomach watching these channels. They're all obviously spinning the news, either pro-Democrat or pro-Republican. Pro-liberal or pro-conservative. It's obvious and stupid and mind-numbing.
  17. Myopic. And sad. And for the record, MSNBC (or whomever the left-wing jackdaw is) is full of derp, too.
  18. I don't know if you thought I was doing this, but for the record I was not. Just pointing out how similar the two teams are.
  19. Did you? All I see is a bunch of people on the jock of the Occupy movement, spewing derp from Fox News and failing to even remotely try to see the point of "the other side." All this partisan bickering is foolish and contributes to the mess we're in today. Open your eyes to the disaster you're helping perpetuate. Stop supporting these parties and stop watching these right- and left-wing news outlets. I don't care if you're a pot or a kettle in this. You're all ruining my country.
  20. Yes, the SEC has been doing this for years, and I think it's a good strategy. I would not be against the Big Ten adopting a scheduling policy like this.
  21. Heh.....I'm also too lazy to look up current sos but Michigan's sos can't be anywhere close to ours. According to Sagarin, we've played the #36 SOS and Michigan has played the #39 SOS. Here's an article talking about how similar the two teams look. Major NCAA stat categories are on the right, and they are nearly identical, with Michigan's #7 ranking in Scoring Defense the major outlier. Playing Michigan is going to be like looking in the mirror.
  22. There is zero reason to fire Pelini after a season that can be no worse than 8-4, especially when it comes on the heels of back-to-back 10-win seasons. It's bizarre that people are even mentioning this.
  23. The D Line was supposed to be the strength of the team, and we were supposed to have All-Americans at all three levels of defense. With Camstache, Crick and Steinkuhler returning intact and Ankrah/Martin taking over at the other DE being largely perceived as addition by subtraction of Pierre Allen, we were all geared up to have a fantastic D Line with quality depth at every position. Add to that Lavonte David coming off a record-setting year and the return of Compton and Fisher, who were both "potential" guys, we were assuming LB would be decent, if not good. Add to that Lockdown Dennard on one side and Ciante Evans, who had shown flashes of brilliance on the other, the prevailing wisdom would be that we would be superlative on one side (Dennard's) and pretty good on the other (Evans'). At Safety we were pretty up in the air, but again the prevailing wisdom was that the other levels of solid play would protect the safeties from exposure, and they would grow into their roles. Instead of all this, we got a porous D Line that contributes to our #117 (out of 120 teams) ranking in Tackles for Loss and the #66 Rushing Defense. Every single team we've played has rushed the ball on us, and most have passed with comfort as well. The debacle of withholding the Blackshirts for more than half the season didn't help this situation, either. There was plenty of potential with this defense. But with a few exceptions, it hasn't come to fruition. With Bo being a "defensive genius," this is pretty hard to stomach for most.
