  1. They are much more than just players on the sidelines. "With a travel squand of 60, we averaged about 23 walk-ons per year on the travel squad" - Tom Osborne in the book The Nebraska Way by Jonathan Crowl In the March 2008 Huskers Illustrated Magazine there is a small article that lists All Conference Walk-ons from when Tom Osborne was head coach. It lists 26 first team All Conference players, some more than one year. Also listed are 4 players as being All American But maybe what is most important of walk-ons to the Husker program is their work ethic, pride, spirit, and determination. One of the players in this photo started as a walkon.
  2. I like the one where Crouch lays out that Iowa DB, and still has the ability to stay on his feet and score.
  3. This will probably depend somewhat on your age. Coach -Since I am getting to be an old man, I would go with Devaney over T.O, in a close call. People seem to only remember Tom and his last 5 years, and not remember his first 20 with no NCs, the label as the guy who couldn't win the big game etc. Besides that he almost got fired in the 70s and many people would have liked to have run him out of town when he went to Boulder to see about the CU job. Of course NU fans started a petition to get Devaney fired as well. Player - Again being older there is only one choice - Johnny the Jet Rodgers, imo the most exciting college football player ever. Play - The Jets punt return vs OU in 71 or maybe Tagge streching over the goal in the Orange Bowl to get NU its first NC.
  4. Sorry if this has already been posted. http://www.tulsaworld.com/sports/article.a...2_2__ByGue35833
  5. Had a discussion the other day with someone who has the misconception that Nebraska players have used lots of steroids over the years. I told him I didn't think there were very many if any that have ever tested positive. Does anyone know if some players have?? The NCAA banned steroids in 1984, testing prior to bowl games in 1986 and year round in 1990. I am sure NU has random tests of their own as well.
  6. Sorry if this has been posted before. I just came across this article about B.P. and it has this photo from a past car ad. Guy really does look like Bo. Photo is down the page a ways. http://www.sundaymorningqb.com/story/2008/1/31/23018/1001
  7. Don't have it in front of me right now, but I belive Devaney said "If you don't believe in yourself, who the hell else will?" Don't know if that will help?
  8. Good coaching can make a world of difference. Bob Devaney came to Nebraska in 1962, took over what had become one of the worst football programs in the country. NU had not had a winning season in 8 years and only won 3 games the year before. He immediately won 9 games in his first season and since freshmen were ineligible he would not of had a single player that he recruited playing that year. The next year he won the first of 4 straight conference championships.
  9. Schedule has been set for program wrapping up spring ball. Should have at least some highlights. Site also has lots of past shows etc. http://netdb.unl.edu/bigredwrapup/
  10. Maybe this has already been posted. But you can watch Big Red Wrapup online. Should at least show some plays. Also have past programs. Don't have date set yet. http://netdb.unl.edu/bigredwrapup/ When you live out of state every little bit helps.
  11. You can try going to the site https://www.donotcall.gov/ and make sure your number is still registered. If you still get calls there is a link there to turn them in. You need there phone # or name to do so.
  12. this link might be of help, think its fairly up to date, hope you enjoy your trip http://www.darthhusker.com/guide.htm
  13. I don't think there is anything wrong with the option, provided you have the right players, coaching and play calling. You can't be predictable on first - second down, and then throw on 3rd and long. I don't remember the exact year, it was in one of the Orange Bowl games vs Miami in the late 80 or early 90s. Bill Walsh was doing commentary for the network. He said Nebraskas offense was outdated and did not work anymore (don't remember the exact words) Shortly after that NU went 60-3 in a 5 year period with 3 NCs, running that same offense and probably running even more. It all depends on the play calling, players, and coaching. I don't think the option will come back full time, (not that it ever was) but I think it could be a good thing to do it at least a little bit. One thing I do like about the option is that when you hold on to the ball for long drives that take 5-10 minutes off the clock it keeps the other teams offense on the sideline and cooling their heels.
  14. Link to good article on selecting the best CFB team ever. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/6...st_college.html
  15. we went from the recognized worst program in the nation to the pinnacle of it with the principles and systems instilled by LHCBS. The total housecleaning of everything that was a part of that system still irks me to this day. And to see it all replaced with less effective, but more grandiose pompousness is sad I liked what Barry Switzer said about them a few years ago. "you all had a nice run" They did, hope they enjoyed it, they probably won't see it again for awhile.
  16. This probably has been posted before but I just found it. Great defense. The 3rd time they show the play is in slowmo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeqRBjwTEjA...feature=related
  17. This site has tons of info on Lincoln including motels http://www.darthhusker.com/guide.htm
  18. If you haven't seen this, its pretty funny. Some of you might remember Jerry Murtaugh, if you're to young you should also enjoy. Hope its not a sin to post a link to another fan site. http://www.huskerpedia.com/7/
  19. And people say Solich couldn't recruit, and Callahan was great at it. hmmmm
  20. Gayle Sayers first year in college was 1961. Devaney did not come to NU until 1962. Sayers was offered by Nebraska but picked Kansas instead (NU was not a very good program at the time). One of the reasons he gave was that Kansas had a better track program. Sayers was recruited by NU head coach Bill Jennings and had he got him to commit to NU, maybe he would not have been fired and then there probably would not have been a Devaney and then later Osborne.. You never know. To bad Sayers was not a couple years younger, Devaney probably would of got him, just like he did Johnny R. who wanted to go to USC. NU was 3-0 in Sayers 3 games vs Nebraska when he was at KU, Kansas had won 5 straight vs the Huskers prior to that. Other big misses - Barry Sanders, NU probably could have got him but already had a couple rbs in class and passed on him. Also tried to recruit Marshal Faulk as a db and he wanted to run the ball.
  21. DTs Rich Glover - Two time All American, won both the Outland and Lombardi trophies, placed 3rd in Heisman voting. Bob Devaney called him the greatest defensive player he ever saw. If you want to see one of the best defensive games ever by a Husker watch the 71 game vs Oklahoma. He had 22 tackles vs OUs All American center. Named first team DT on Sports Illustrated all century team. Jason Peter - All American, runnerup for Outland won by team mate Aaron Taylor DEs Willie Harper - Two time All American Grant Wistrom - Lombardi winner, two time All American LBs Jerry Murtaugh - Just plain mean. All American, held NUs career tackle record for over 30 years. (Murtaugh played when bowl game stats did not count and freshmen were ineligible. Broderick Thomas - Two time All American, finalist for both Lombardi and Butkis awards. Trev Alverts - Butkis winner, All American, Football News national defensive player of year Safties Mike Minter - All Conference, 4 year letterwinner. Mike Brown - All American, Jim Thorpe and Bronco Nagurski canidate. CBs Tyrone Williams - Two time first team all conference, 3 year starter. Ralph Brown - All American, 3 time first team all conference, 3 time Jim Thorpe canidate. 4 year starter.
  22. You might find this link helpfull. Darth Husker guide to Lincoln
  23. The offense could/should be pretty good, and the defense can't help but improve. I see no reason with a llittle luck to win at least 9 games and challenge for the Big 12 North. Bob Devaney took over a team that had been 3-6-1 and his first year went 9-2. Good coaching makes a world of difference.
  24. Best 1. Johhnny the Jet returning punt for td vs OU in 71 2. T.O.s first NC and the celebration at 72 and Dodge. 3. Destroying Bama in the Orange bowl after the 71 season. Worst 1. The last 4 years. 2. Orange Bowl loss after the 83 season. 3. All the close losses to OU during the 70s and 80s (I know thats not a single thing)
  25. With a new coach starting next fall, I thought it might be a good idea for the first game to do the same thing as the opening game in 2003. Invite all former players back and have them to the parade around the field like they did then?? Maybe some suggestions to the athletic dept. would get them going on that.
