  1. Can't help but wonder if part of John Blake's recruitment of Reggie Smith included certain such enticements.
  2. 2nd. Oklahoma has the same style. Its very basic, but classic. Both modern teams are just going with a similar classic look. nobody "copied" anyone else. That said. We've won more trophies and more games- so its OURS! EDIT: actually this thread made me curious when we adopted the striped pants and the striped (on the side) sleeves. Pants-- as far as I can tell go back to '66. You can see it a little in this picture. http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/81453634/Sports-Illustrated Pictures from the previous year's bowl game show stripe-less pants: http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/75092011/Collegiate-Images Of course we dropped them in the late 90s. I dont' think they were re-added until after the 2002 uni disaster. The shoulder stripes, maybe '84: http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/71545574/Getty-Images-Sport
  3. Had to do a little Googling of old articles but this may clear some things up about where Cook may stand after his Oct. 2007 tirade: LINK On Callahan's firing: Flash forward back to 2010. I'm guessing these boosters are happier now... Obviously TO wouldn't be talking about yet another stadium expansion if they weren't. I'm kind of curious to know what he and other mega donors think of the Big 10 move.
  4. Well, it turns out you're not alone! On other Husker message boards there are similar threads to this one trying to translate the shirt... (a sure sign that it is still technically the offseason!) I thought the shirt was funny with the message it intended to have but apparently the reference to Iowa throws enough people off the trail that it requires an explaination.
  5. Well this is cleary a mistake. Its Longhorns, not cattle. and the Corn part indicates our mascot is a vegitable not a person who "husks" the corn. I can't believe they would let mistakes like that onto this shirt. Iowa's corn isn't even in Texas. (Just in case)
  6. I know, why is this concept so difficult for some? To have to repeatedly and slowly explain a t-shirt? a mistake? its not that technical. Iowa State apparently doesn't qualify as a "ex" who is still located in Iowa and Colorado "doesn't live in Texas"... wha? huh? who? omg. i give up.
  7. FWIW... Iowa would be correct - the list is referring to the states not the schools. Then it still doesn't make sense. Y'all are still going to playing games in Iowa. Seriously? I'll pile on, too. Just because you have a future partner who also happens to be in Iowa does not change the fact that you still have an ex who is in Iowa. Its really not that technical. Also, I must have missed the part of the shirt that says "we will never play in the states again". which would be the only statement that would allow your post to make sense.
  8. We knew he was going to end up with a bottom feeder team if he went high in the draft-- That's the point of the draft. But IMO Detroit is the best situation of the top 3 for Suh. The Rams are bad but I don't know if they've even hit bottom yet. Not sure which direction Tampa is going in but there were recent stories that Ruud had wanted out. Detroit has always been terrible but you get the feeling that maybe they are finally heading in the right direction. Hey, if the Saints can do it.. Plus, could Suh have a better mentor than Vanden Bosch? Not just a good NFL team leader but a fellow Blackshirt. Raiola is also a captain.
  9. Nope, sometime around 96 or 97 is when it started. For sure 97 because of the Missouri game. Why do you think Osborne went for 2 in the 84 Orange Bowl? iirc OT was officially introduced for the bowl games in 1995. I remember this because part of the hype for the Fiesta Bowl was that the game could go into OT (ha!). I definately remember Osborne being asked about it prior to the game and he said he thought it was a good idea and with his typical dry humor he added that he "wish they'd had it in '83" Edit: Found a few articles in Google Archive News: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=IYEUAAAAIBAJ&sjid=ZAMEAAAAIBAJ&pg=4299,5225295 Officially decided in May of 1995 that there would be OT in that season's bowl games- but not the regular season.
  10. I didn't see this posted yet. Its definately worth a read. "The Oklahoman conducted its second annual Big 12 media days player poll, and they gave their answers" There are some Really surprising answers in there. I thought there would be a lot more negativity towards Nebraska but frankly, not so much: NewsOK Players Poll A small sample: Colorado didn't come out so well, though. but a few of the players like their stadium.
  11. I disagree that :01 is motivation for Texas only. And I would point to your 2nd comment as the reason I disagree. :01 and "Finish" are part of the same point, the same end. it only takes a moment, :01 for Paul to drop those passes. just :01 for O'Hanlon to lose his focus and let the VTech WR slip past. etc, etc. The "1:16" they had on the practice clock in 1994 is EXACTLY what :01 is this year. they had 1:16 to FINISH that game, ie "Un-finished Business". but that wasn't motivation just for just FSU in case the two teams happened to meet up again in '94. it was for the entire season! so if one side of the bracelet is for Texas only, then it shouldn't be. :01 may have come from that game but its more of a simplified symbol of what went wrong vs ISU, VTech, TTech. Its the perfect representation that "Every 'second' counts". they should have that :01 in their heads vs Missou, A&M, OSU-- EVERYONE next season. Not just Texas. they're in trouble next season if part of their motivational hardware only references just one game and not all the games. i don't believe that is the case though, Bo won't allow that. BTW, i want a bracelet too.
  12. Interesting article HERE. Suh's agent says the "more $ than Bradford" rumor is BS. I think/hope he made enough of an impression with teammates that they know he wants to be there and they understand how these things work. But this will look really bad if he misses more than a week. IMO even a short holdout won't help the reputation of his agents. They already looked like jerks from the Crabtree thing but now, they have a holdout from a guy who promised he'd be in camp on time...
  13. That is the difference between Nebraska vs Colorado "rivalry" and the Texas vs Nebraska "rivalry". We aren't trying to convince Texas that they should consider Nebraska as its #1 or even #2 rival. Sure we don't like them and this year there's a Husker obsession with Oct. 16 that we probably haven't seen since the OU games in the 70s/80s. we see all the threads on Texas the last couple weeks (I think we're all guilty), even after the expansion brew-ha. I can't help but think of all the "netbuffs is obsessed with us-- how pathetic" shots. Now we're doing that a little with UT. Though I'd imagine a Husker message board from the 70s would have been the same thing with OU. but we also get that the Texas game has always been much bigger to us than the Nebraska game is to them. The Buffs on the other hand always insisted that we look at the matchup the same way they did. Colorado, no matter how bad they sucked in a given year, always played Nebraska much tougher than they should have. The fact that we kept up with Texas and nearly beat them in 2007 reminded me of the way CU always played us even during their worst years. Those were close games but were still one-sided results and that doesn't make either matchup a "rivalry". To be honest, I would love to do to UT what CU did to us in 2001. But one win like that would hardly make up for all those close losses. and we sure as he!! wouldn't stoop so low as to put a reg.season Texas score on a ring should we earn one. actually just the thought of us ever doing something like that makes me a little ill. 2nd. Can you imagine what Pelini could do if he had the recruit pickings that Texas has? Mack Brown is a nice guy and a good coach. But he is hardly one of the best considering the tools he gets every year compared to the comparitive lack of results.
  14. I'm guessing that's exactly what they wanted. I disagree. There were too many reports that Texas wanted to keep the conference together. The Big 10/Pac 10/SEC weren't going to work out the way they wanted so the next best option was the Big 12-- with 12 teams. But the Nebraska/Big 10 ball was already rolling. What did the leaks out of Texas do? It heightened the situation to a point where it seemed like every hour there was a new rumor/situation. Things were put into hyperdrive. Delany kept saying the process would take "12-18 months". how could that possibly be squeezed into barely a couple weeks?? I think Texas thought (realistically) that Nebraska and the Big 10 couldn't possibly come to an agreement that quickly. But they did.
  15. As I've said before. If the time clock was open to replay review at the end of the 2009 Championship game then why wasn't that option available at halftime of the CU game in 2005? Obviously the game situations were very different. but the specifics were similar. Stadium clock running down. Incomplete pass (spiked ball in '05). was there time left for a FG try? 2005 maybe. but its not open for replay. 2009 maybe. Where's the replay booth?
  16. It may also be a factor that starting 2011 or '12, Texas and the rest of the Big 12(-2) will have more conference games on the schedule. Maybe the re-alignment means they would be overscheduled for 2015. It sucks for Minnesota but its also likely two fewer losses for the Gophers.
  17. I wonder why Nebraska voted for (and benefited from) unequal revenue shares from the Big 12? That happened like 15 years ago. It's IRRELEVANT. Actually, I believe it is relevant. When the Big 12 was formed, the strength of the conference was held in the North primarily by Nebraska; Colorado; and KState. Over the years, the North power has diminished while the South teams have gotten better and hold the upper hand with the exception of A&M. Consequently, two of the three original powers are now headed off to other conferences. The problem with staying in the Big 12 as it currently stands is even if we become a national contender we're still in the weak North. By being a one man show up in the North, we stand a far less chance of TV revenue when playing other North schools than teams in the South playing each other. Financially, it did make sense for us to move to the Big 10 even though I cringe at the thought of it. However, I completely understand how other teams fanbases get the impression that we simply took our ball and went home. There were administrative officials from Nebraska quoted as saying way back then that they didn't feel it was fair that a team be penalized by having to share their revenue with lesser schools. The money was very different back then as well. Most conferences split a pie that is three times the revenue they earned in 1995. When you have an unequal distribution of revenue, those inequalities become more and more exaggerated the higher the dollar amounts you're talking about. If Nebraska made 2-3 million per year more than Iowa State in 1995, the impact is far less than making 6-9 million more per year today. The economics of the league as formed in 1995 didn't mean that the rich schools would vastly outstrip the less rich. It meant that they would be rewarded based on the work they've done, but everyone would be in the same revenue neighborhood. Today that's all changed. TV contracts in the hundreds of millions of dollars make those inequalities far greater, and make the danger of a top-heavy conference even more realistic. The Big 12 simply cannot support itself as a conference of lords and serfs. These minor rumblings are just the start, and Nebraska was smart enough to realize where this was heading, and move to a more stable situation. The fact that it's a more equal revenue-sharing conference is just icing. 2nd. This is exactly what I've been trying to argue with some people. The fact that the Forgotten Five had to bribe the wealthiest schools only emphasizes the lords/serfs analogy. Good for OU and UT for turning down that offer, if true. One wonders if they recognized what a bad PR move that would be or just that it would not help if they wanted to keep a remotely healthy conference relationship with the Five. I am surprised that A&M is taking that money though. Not necessarily out of some moral issue but its not like those exit fees are going to be an annual source of funds. then where is the money going to come from after CU and NU have paid? A&M should have left when they had a golden chance to do so. You can't get blood from a turnip. Making ultimatums like this and getting bribes from your lesser neighbors... the money they want simply won't be there for long.
  18. very true. all the focus is on Texas Texas Texas but as we saw with the ISU game last year, take no game for granted. Frankly I'm more worried about a conference upset at the hands of KU, KSU, A&M, lil' OSU. Heck, even Colorado (i'm still scarred by the 1990s games where they would suck all season but play us to a death match). Oh, and I will also be looking at every seemingly bad call by the refs with a conspiratorial eye.
  19. You mean like when they did a replay to check the time left on clock at the end of the half against CU in 2005? oh wait... nevermind. that wa a very similar situation in terms of the time supposedly running out after an incomplete pass (spiked ball). but apparently replay couldn't be applied in that situation.
  20. Interesting. Thanks for posting! I think i like Merriman now. KVB is a better influence than Haynesworth that's for sure! I liked the crawling celebration Polk used to do. It always seemed like he was so excited after a big play that he didn't bother getting up on his feet before celebrating. Anyone know what Polk is doing now? Last I knew he was cut by the Cowboys.
  21. Nice! Jay Moore just signed with the Cowboys but one would assume that if he doesn't make the cut in August/September he'll probably head back to UFL..? I'm kinda surprised Dan Bullocks is still looking for an NFL team. So lets see: Green, T.Green, Kenny Wilson, Lucky and Pork Chop. Five Huskers RBs in the UFL (for now)? BTW Bo Ruud was just recently released by the Florida Tuskers. Interesting that he signed down there but maybe he wanted to be close to his brother? The report said that he was "retiring" so I don't think we'll see him with the Nighthawks.
  22. I had tried to search "Husker Legacy Statue" in google but just keeping it simple with "Husker Statue" came up with better results. A couple favorites: http://nebraskaframed.com/Framed-Huskers.html And this guy took some great pics and prettied 'em up too: Flickr
  23. Which statue? Not this one: That's the one. It was definately vs Kansas State '95 that was the inspiration. The opposing player was KSU RB Mike Lawrence. I'd made a little video of the play for a friend but I guess this thread is reason enough to just put it up on YouTube. Interestingly they didn't even give it a replay on the ABC broadcast! Video I threw in a low quality scan i had of a photograph that had appeared in the LJS at the time. maybe the same photograph referenced on Huskers.com? FWIW, this is the Sports Illustrated that was out after the CU game in 1994. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/edb/reader.html?magID=SI&issueDate=19941107&mode=reader_vault (GREAT site BTW, play around with old SI's) Ooooh, maybe the 1996 game vs CU? I was at that game- even in the middle of July it makes me cold just thinking about it! IIRC it was a day game as opposed to night but either way the sun was no where to be found.
  24. two years onward... bump. Are there any watch sites on the Western Slope? There are plenty of Husker fans in GJunction, it would be worth getting together and possibly have a local bar to show the games. Please IM me if there are any Junction Husker fans that might be interested in getting something together for this upcoming season.
