I played at the NAIA level in South Dakota. Doane seems like a joke. I had a new coach come in my sophomore year that played for NW Missouri State and he was crazy. The things he did and said were out of this world. No one walked out b/c we wanted to learn and play the game at a high level. These kids need to suck it up and deal with new coaches. When you are playing college football, you are not to be babied and coddled. You are an adult, playing a competitive game. Now I know that Doane is not D-1, but it is college football. I look at it as, D-III with scholarships. My team played Sioux Falls and they were very tough. They are very hard to compete with since they get the majority of kids that either don't get offered scholarships by SDSU, USD, or Augustana or they get the kids who try to play there and can't and are studs at the NAIA level. USF has SOOOO much money they don't know what to do with it. It just seems as if Doane is not behind their program.
There are some very good teams in that conference. The schools that left my school's old conference (SDIC) and formed the GPAC put schools like Doane and Concordia in a lot of trouble.
I honestly feel sorry for Tommie for the simple fact that he was probably hired b/c of what he did for Nebraska. People had such high expectations for him to come in and start winning games. From the sound of it, he had players there that took it as playing intramurals. Don't get me wrong, berading a kid for not catching on to something is not the best choice, but I am sure he was extremely frustrated with the lack of talent he had on that team. It will take time to build the team that he wants. Just b/c he is not taking Nebraska kids does not mean he is a bad person or does not care about Nebraska. Every school in the nation looks at Texas, Florida, and California for recruits. You would be crazy not to. The people at Doane just need to get use to change and deal with it. Let the people who have the titles run the program, it is not a high school program and the people of the community don't need to know every decision that is being made and for what reason it was made.
IMHO it does not matter if you are playing at powerhouse D-1 school or you are at a community college. You are still playing college football. The expectations are higher and you have to meet them. If you are not able to do that then don't blame it on the coach. Take a good look at yourself in the mirror and ask if you gave it your all everyday.
