Statistics are statistics and they say what they say. They're either gathered and interpreted correctly or they aren't. And you might want to re-read the topic before you reply to my post and talk about pissing and moaning about cops. I've done neither of those things. It's that gathering and interpretation that is being questioned. Statistics need context as well. In socioeconomic issues statistics can't be used as an end all be all. There are far, far too many variables influencing them. I think they can be used for a guide, but still need to be looked at with an open mind. Agree with the bolded. I think people often question them out of hand if they disagree with the results, not because they think the interpretation or sampling methods are wrong.

You must live in a shell, there are thousands upon thousands of people that hate the police, want us dead now because they think we are "racist pigs that are only here to violate rights" I have a right to an opinion on the matter as well. My profession is being attacked unfairly and you think I'm just going to stand by and not speak up about that? The point isn't that changing the demographics of the police force would inherently result in less shootings. The point is that if the demographics are appropriate for an area, then the people within that area are more likely to trust the police, and less likely to look at a police shooting as whites versus black. Another point: a change of what would be statistically relevant? 100? 50? I should hope there aren't that many unjust police shootings. Finally, it was said that to predict police shootings, look at the black population. Aside from the crazy racial stuff there, maybe the better thing to look at would be income. Sure Cicero, Illinois has more crime than Schaumburg. Look at the income disparity. Middle class people are less likely to commit a non banking related crime. I'm willing to bet he already took income inequality into account. I could only find the abstract but I found something else of his where he did. (It would be hard to get published anywhere credible if he hadn't since that's an obvious thing to look at). Amazing! I feel like this study would support the claim that an all-white city of 250,000 would have fewer police shootings than an all-black of 100,000. Aside from that, there's nothing that will prevent the black population from increasing. So, conclusions offered by the study don't do anything to provide us with any information that could produce a tangible, applicable resolutions to this problem. The conclusion is that increasing diversity in the police force is not a resolution. It's beneficial to know what won't help. Not all research gives the results we want.

It did. By 2 votes. If 42 had voted against Nebraska instead of 44, we'd still be in it. And when people talk about agricultural research not being counted, and UNMC not being counted, those aren't just lame excuses. They are very valid.

Nebraska doesn't need to beat MSU or Wisconsin or Ohio State in order for the Big Ten to be good. Big Ten teams just need to beat their out of conference opponents.
