  1. No worries. I'm in my early 40s, but these punks here act like I'm 100 years old or something. I guess when I was in my 20s, 40 seemed old, too. But they're still all punks. Ya know... when I first saw his post, I thought... "He's my age... he just ACTS crotchety once in a while." But you're like that crotchety but endearing uncle... and your efforts are definitely GREATLY appreciated, sir.
  2. I love the honesty. I don't know why, but I laughed out loud when I read this. I really don't. I fear if we lose Bo.....NEB may not find a better coach.....for not some time or maybe EVER. As fans, we gotta give Bo time. Patience Husker fans....patience. I didn't mean to come off sounding like a dick, just being honest. Power-I provided some facts that I will not deny, yet his post doesn't tell the whole story IMO. This. I mean, who has taken over a situation like Bo came into, and done as well? Very few. And certainly not with the specifics that Bo has had to go through. Bo was challenging for conference championships within two years of taking over. Had the conference switch not come when it did, I believe he may have even won one. But the way things were stacked against us in '10 going through the final season in the Big XII, and then to come in to a different conference, and I'm not sure any of us really knew how difficult the trek through our first season would be, and come through still with a 9 win season. I'm willing to give Bo the latitude he needs right now. We've had circumstances that neither Bob Devaney nor TO had to go through in their tenure, and Bo's still done what only 5 other coaches have ever done, take their first head coaching job, and coach their first four seasons to 9 wins or greater. Yeah, I think we all should be willing to cut him a lot more slack than we have. Championships or not, if he keeps winning 9 games a season, you don't fire the guy. No rational successful coach is going to come in for cutting a guy like that. And TO certainly won't cut him with a record like that. Don't know whether our next AD would, but I doubt it. We'll see what the next couple of years bring, but Bo is still building. As long as I see that, I have confidence that the winning and championships will come.
  3. Thanks! Greatly appreciated! Should be a good day and a good weekend, I think.
  4. Sadly, the question isn't about what would make better basketball, or even what we'd prefer as fans, at least not individually... it comes down to what will put more rear-ends in the seats, and ultimately, what will get us on TV and make a better ratings draw for TV. And to that end, I think the big-name school from a power five/six conference (BCS conference if you will) accomplishes that more than the high level mid-major or low-major. So while I'd love to see a talented Summit/Horizon or such team come in and play for the pure basketball portion of it, to draw the peripheral/occasional fan, you really have to have at least a few big name schools coming in to play against. And while some of the names may not be what we'd like to see, there are some basketball names/pedigrees there we haven't seen in quite this amount before. Teams like Valpo, Tulane, Kent St. All teams that at least have some type of basketball name. And I'd argue that Oregon isn't average. Their RPI from last year certainly wouldn't indicate that, and most grading of scheduling is done off of RPI #s, so having 3 top 100 RPI teams from last year won't hurt the non-con. Would help if we would win one or two, but even having them on your schedule helps. Will definitely be interesting. I think Miles will up the schedule as he goes, but this first year I think he was looking for a good balance of confidence boosters and challenges, and I think this provides him with that. Again, I think this team may surprise a few people in conference play. I'm not expecting a great showing, by any stretch, but I think we could still end up in seventh or eighth when all is said and done. Regardless, I won't be surprised or disappointed no matter how we do this year. i'll be happy for the wins, understand the losses, and know that we're building for the future.
  5. A couple other interesting tidbits about those numbers for attendance: 1. The top 6 single match numbers come from the '05 regional semis and final, '06 final four semis and final, and '08 final four semis and final that were held at Qwest/CLink. (The semis together were evidently sold as one session, I believe, and so the semis each show up with the same total, though you could actually say the top nine numbers come from those matches, with those double-ups.) 2. UNK has been a perennial contender for top attendance marks in DII, and has many of the top single match attendance records as well.
  6. It will be interesting next year. Because Nebraska should continue to sell out after the move, if the predictions of the athletic department are right, and the capacity should end up at a tic under 7K, I think is the estimate. That would likely Nebraska over Hawaii on average attendance if Hawaii averages about what they have the last five years. If Hawaii can get back to over a 7K average that they have had previously, from like '02 to '06, then Hawaii would likely still remain at the top of the average. Nebraska will have a tough time hitting the total attendance mark because of the # of games Hawaii has. Last year they had 23, this year it looks like they're slated for 19. Nebraska had 16 last year, we're slated for 15 at the Coliseum this year, though I'm not sure whether the annual game that's been rotating between the BOB and Qwest/Clink is counted in those totals or not. If it is, that will give us a boost. Regardless, will be interesting and nice for Husker fans to see those numbers become a great deal more competitive next year. Will also be interesting to see the WAC take a tumble in attendance rankings, and the Big Sky all of a sudden shoot up because of their move to the Big Sky this year. Will really skew the conference attendance numbers. For those interested, the numbers for last season and records for past years are found here: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/w_volleyball_RB/2012/Attendance.pdf
  7. Couple things: 1. I did a quick rundown on the final RPI for each team last year. Did not look for Midland (not DI, I don't believe, and it's exh. anyway) and did not find one for UNO (likely not given one by the NCAA due to their Year One transitional status: Southern 279 Valpo 100 Tulane 251 Kent St. 114 Wake Forest 182 USC 265 Creighton 23 Oregon 52 Jacksonville St. 225 Central Mich. 280 UTEP 146/Ark PB 302 Nicholls St. 299 Nebraska was 147 last year. Knowing all that, I'd think we could have a decent chance to win all but 2 of those games. I think Creighton and Oregon obviously are the two toughest, and will likely be losses. Creighton/Nebraska seems to be a dogfight most years, so I wouldn't want to necessarily predict it, but with what they have back, it'd take an enormous coaching effort to do it. Not that Miles isn't up to it, but very tough. With those lines from last year, it looks like we've got a decent opportunity with just about everyone else on the schedule. No guarantees, and certainly some growing pains, but as Miles said, a nice schedule to test and grow with. 2. I think, depending on how the season has gone up to that point, we have a chance to shock people. If Miles can get them playing well together, and make a nice run somewhere in the B1G season or even win a game or two in the tournie, it would set up very nicely going into next year. Yes, I know, drinking a lot of koolaid to get there, but always nice to think about what could happen.
  8. Well... couple things on the soccer front: Evidently the women were picked to finish tenth in the conference this year. Sad, but probably not surprising with where our performance has been the last few years. Considering Walker has been our one and only coach since the team was created, it might be a little tough to try and oust him at this point, but I think at some point, if the underperforming continues, you have to start thinking about a change. Lots of optimism for this year and the future, with who Coach Walker has brought in, but we have to start to see some performance on the field. The home opener will be at Abbott Sports Complex, where the ladies used to play before they renovated Ed Weir for soccer. Evidently there is still construction going on, and the new surface hasn't taken like they expected it to, with the above-average temperatures and so little rainfall. Couple articles expounding on this. The first from the Journal-Star, found here: http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/nu-sports-notes-husker-soccer-th-in-b-g-poll/article_62168b04-7073-548c-9cdd-fded512e9f90.html The second, from huskers.com, found here: http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=205588430 This weekend should start to give us a glimpse of where we might be. Oklahoma away on Friday, and the above-referenced home opener on Sunday. Might try to hit the game on Sunday.
  9. Added earlier today to the listing in the recruiting thread. Welcome to Huskerland, Grant.
  10. Husker Women won 2-0 on Friday. Goals by sophomore Sandra Areman and freshman Caroline Flynn. While SDSU isn't the cream of the crop, they were a 160 RPI last year, so not bottom of the barrel either. 12-6-2 on the season last year. Nice exhibition game to get the kinks out. And Ms. Flynn is indeed one of the five Toro club soccer players coming in this year. Nice to see them making an impact already! Can't wait to get out and see them in action soon. First home game next Sunday, August 19.
  11. Wow... that men's BMX final must've been something. The American went in as the top qualifier, and ended up clear behind the pack. Must've been a wreck of some type, only thing I can think of.
  12. Bikes are vehicles. Why it would even be a question that they should be operated on the roadway (or bike paths) is something I'm still trying to figure out in this thread. Want more security for bicycles in downtown? Talk to local government, talk to the police, etc., and have them help. But riding your bike on the sidewalks, whether or not they're filled with people isn't the answer, and legally in downtown isn't an option.
  13. They're no flashier, or offensive, than have the hyper-promotional stuff that gets handed to professional athletes who have just won a championship, or even winners of the BCS Championship or March Madness. Tacky? Absolutely. But not worth the tweets that were included in that yahoo article or the article itself. Much ado about nothing, or at least very little, as it were.
  14. London2012.com showing Burroughs in the Gold Medal match. Must have won his semi, then.
  15. Awesome article. Great tidbits in there, from what is essentially an outsider's perspective. Great to hear confirmation on what we've been speculating on Cross. Glad I got to meet him and get his autograph the other day. That chance may not come along again, unless I'm willing to stand in what is typically a huge RB line. Can't wait to see the show tonight.
  16. GSG - Yep. The numbers they showed for the last event, he and Hardee were close, way too close to make that up. Nice to have Gold and Silver both! And wow... Jamaicans sweeping the 200m.
  17. Men should take 1-2 in the Decathalon, I believe. Finishing up with the 1500 right now.
  18. Agreed, Comish. I didn't really understand Doc's reasoning either, unless it was just a basic 'perception' that we should be playing tougher opponents. I think any time you can develop local rivalries, it helps everyone. I certainly believe that's the case with Nebraska and Creighton. Helps foster competitiveness on both sides.
  19. Hope this is okay with the mods to start this for the year. Thought I'd kick it off, since the ladies kick it off up in South Dakota on Friday with an exhibition against South Dakota State. Can't wait to see the ladies in action. As I stated in the thread regarding the schedule, there are five freshmen coming in from a nationally competitive club team in Omaha, and hopefully that will provide some cohesiveness right off the bat. Should be interesting to see how the women compete this year. While we lost our prolific scorer, sometimes that can be a good thing, because if you have one player that's so strong, you can begin to rely on that individual too much. I think we'll see pretty early on how well this team can work together. GBR!
  20. More info about the tournament that Nebraska was putting on. Evidently, four host sites, and four of the seven participating teams will play in a bracket style tournie the last weekend. Interesting concept, and it looks and smells like it has a big Miles influence in here. Could be wrong, maybe not giving Boehm enough credit, but this was a pretty ambitious project, from the looks of it. Can't wait to see it unfold. Should be a good test for the team to see where it's at in terms of capabilities. Also be nice to see Nebraska and Nebraska-Omaha play for the first time, and see how the respective programs stack up. Hopefully, this becomes an annual event. Maybe try to build to a higher level of team as you go along. Link here: http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=205571521
  21. I'll say it! "This year will be our year!" Edited for: :koolaid2: :koolaid2: :koolaid2: :koolaid2: :koolaid2:
  22. I know people find it amusing that the Board rules are enforced to this degree. But the plain and simple truth is... the last thing the Board needs is to get sued, or worse yet, shut down a place we all like to frequent, simply because a few fairly simple rules weren't followed. (And yes... the money it might take for damages in a suit could conceivably shut the doors. I'm in no way 'in the know' here, but the dollars such suits can bring can be very taxing, and for a group that puts a great place out here for us to share our ideas, for free... it's crazy to think that we wouldn't take it upon ourselves to make sure we follow the simple rules.) FWIW, yes, I am an attorney, and yes, I have seen places/businesses have to shut down for less. (Yes, less than not citing sources on a message board.)
  23. Found it interesting that two of the three guys mentioned under trash talking were the guys that were involved in 'dustups' on Twitter over the offseason.
  24. I think the sanctions should be made worse because they're appealing them. I totally agree. I also think they should get the death penalty if they lose the appeal. Agree. Either accept it and move on..............or risk worse by dragging it out. (Death penalty PLUS previously agreed to sanctions) how do you appeal a decision you accepted? i know it is different factions of the same group, but still. And that's the problem I have with the way everything has been worded by the media outlets. It's not really the 'Board of Trustees' appealing. It's only certain members, if I read it right. And I'm not sure that, even if the NCAA decided it was appealable, that just a few members of the Board can make that decision on their own. I think those members wouldn't have the standing, so to speak, to be able to do so unless a vote of the full body was taken on the matter. That's why I'm willing to give the rest the benefit of the doubt, because a few members blowing smoke shouldn't be cause to say the whole Board is doing this.
