I'm just a girl

well, the thing is, statistical rankings don't mean a whole lot. Its all about Wins/Losses, and who they are against. If you go undefeated in the big12 and have the lowest offensive numbers in the conference it won't make a difference, you will be a top 5 team.

As far as polls go, BCS is for all the marbles. AP is just an "opinion poll" by the press, the BCS determines the big bowl games.

so if we had the option to be #1 in the BCS and #4 in the AP, or #1 in the AP and #4 in the BCS, we would want the #1 in BCS.

OK so according to ESPN we are ranked 3rd in scoring, 3rd in rushing and 4th in passing in the Big 12

Here is my question

How are we not ranked in top 25 in BCS or AP and which of those 2 really matter??

seeing that you used stats, here is a "statsy" sort of point of view. For starters, like most sports, football is about more than just offense. Defense plays a big role in things.

Statistics are generally hard to go off of alone, but particularly so in college. The amount of teams and coaches adds to the wealth of strategy and often creates some quirky situations. As with Boise St this year, it's not uncommon to find a team ranked statistically very high, but in reality it is just a team from a mid major conference that outclasses it's competition and doesn't really belong with the other teams ranked around it. Another example could be Texas Tech, whose offensive philosophy leads to huge offensive numbers against weak opponents but rather poor performances against moderately capable teams. On average Tech looks strong, but the stats are really a tale of two extremes.

But, just for sh#ts and giggles, lets use those stats. Based on those numbers, we average a 3.7 in our conference. with 6 major BCS conferences and assuming they are more or less equal, that ball parks us somewhere around 22. So we are a borderline top 25 team (at least offensively speaking). Some weeks we will be in, some weeks we will be out.

You can look at it in terms of how the pollsters do. To them, NU hasn't been great in recent years and this year we havn't beaten anybody of much importance. Again, to them we are probably a borderline top 25 team based on our record, and with a recent loss to an unranked OSU team still fresh in their minds we are being left out for the time being.

For example, if you have a REALLY bad team that keeps turning the ball over on their own 5 yard line, they're going to be holding their opponents to very few yards ;) You'd have a wicked good D if all that you looked out was yards allowed :)

We will get back to the Top 25 by beating aTm this weekend. That will definately help us get back up there maybe to 25th or 24th spot because I believe aTm is only like 23rd or something to that affect. Beating sCUm won't really help us at all, but losing to them would send us crashing down............Polls don't really mean anything if you aren't in the hunt for the National Title.
