Detroit, MI -- Detroiter Calvin E. Fluckes Jr., 21, is accused of trying to pass a fake check for $848 at a Wal-Mart with 80 cops in the store.

The best place to commit a crime probably isn't in front of 80 uniformed police officers.

But Chesterfield Township police say a Detroit man did exactly that Tuesday when he tried to pass a counterfeit check for $848 at the Wal-Mart near Hall and Gratiot.

"He has to be an idiot," Lt. David G. Marker said Wednesday. "I can't even imagine what he was thinking."

According to police, Calvin E. Fluckes Jr., 21, pulled into the store's parking lot next to 40 marked squad cars. Apparently unfazed by the cops who filled the aisles and checkout lines for a charity event, Fluckes tried to pay for merchandise with a poorly photocopied check, police said.

The cashier called over a manager, who alerted police.

"He was immediately apprehended," Marker said.

If convicted, Fluckes would face up to 14 years in prison. He was arraigned Wednesday on one count of uttering and publishing in 42-2 District Court in Mt. Clemens. He is being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond.
