Hi All,

Here is my WF trip report..

Started on Thur night 10 pm from nashville..pulled into a quality inn east in knoxville for a 2am stop... got going around 9 am on friday heading for asheville NC.. Pulled into one of the most awesome hotels in asheville.. Homewood Suites.. it was awesome room but ill get back to that.. Went to Biltmore hotel with my gf and saw 4 NU fans in the Organ room.. we chatted briefly and headed on with my tour. Winery on the property was awesome and i just cant comment on how HUGE the place is.... pisgah national forest use to be owned by the vanderbilts and they said mr. vanderbilt wanted property for as FAR as his eye can see.. which was around 900,000 acres .. sold about 895,000 acres to government to make that forest...fyi

Now, onto game day.

Left asheville at 6:30 am for the 2.5 hour road trip to winston-salem...the cops were OUT IN FORCE...saw at least 5 state troopers but i was moderate in my speeding and so they didn't mess with me... Saw SOOO many abandoned cars on the side of the road..didn't know what that was about (I-40 east). Scenery was AWESOME...saw the purples mountain majesty around daybreak and the winding roads on the mountains were challenging at that time of the morn.

saw only 1 Nebraska car on the way to the game...started to get nervous that maybe we wouldn't "show out" during this game.. Pulled into W-S at 9 am and there was no traffic.. i mean i thought i was in the wrong place!!! We pulled to the front of the stadium and my GF said is that the stadium, its so small, not like lincoln! We found parking in the senior center and saw all of our Nebraska brothers and sisters tailgaiting near the auditorium. Saw the Nebraska alumni get together at Ernie Shore field.

So i buzzed my new Nebraska friend that i met while selling my extra wake tickets on here in the blue lot.. Thanks Jamie D for meeting us and being so friendly.. Met one of his buddies back from Iraq/Afghanistan and thanked him so much for his service... On the way down the main parking lot drag and older Wake Forest Fan jumped out at us and said , THANK YOU FOR COMING!!!!! Hope you dont beat us too bad.. I assured him that we were glad to be here and game was gonna be close...

Tried to hook up with another WF friend i met on here.. Jason C but couldn't get him.. So we wondered thru the red lot and caught the huskers coming off the team bus.. Cheered for them as they went into the stadium.

Ok, at this time its Warm.. Ok, i lied its HOT..but we found the football center and decided to sit down and people watch.. Saw the WF football team file into there locker room.. WF players were on the small side...

Sat for a couple hours in the AC till 11:30.. then made our way up to section 9 row YYY seats 23 and 24..... There was a TON of red in the stadium... I would say at least 10 to 15 thousand...

We sat across from the band and was happy to hear Dear ole Nebraska U a couple of times... Game was hard!!!!! I mean Keller was staring down receivers and i commented that he is gonna get picked doing that...and so be it...it happened..

Cant give enough credit to WF mis-direction offense.. it was very hard to stop..they were quick, motivated by their fan base and just tough-nose guys..they didn't give us anything...we had to take that win.

Ok, the officials were well.....bad... For both sides... the first pass interference call called on NU in late 4th quarter..the offical, at least 40 yards away and other side of the field and behind the play called it... he wasn't the person to make the call and looked like a bad call... The interception.. It looked like Eisenhart caught the ball and the replays were at BEST inconclusive but the ACC official in reviewers box gave them the ball. Thats right..it was a HODGE podge of officals, NOT just big-12.. the ACC was the tower reviewing plays... The last pass interference call.. ball was uncatchable so even if grixby gave him some loving at the end.. i think a no-call was fair.

During the game WF ran out of ICE and Water.... GF commented that they were not used to thse huge crowds and maybe were not prepared for the day.. I think it was kind of a perfect storm.. HOT.. about 96..a HUGE thirsty cornfed crowd and the first game of the season...

After the game... 99.9% of the WF fans were the best .. I mean they stopped us and thanked us for coming, said good game... Couldn't have been more nice! Only 1 bad apple in our section who was more than spirited..he was obnoxious but with 95% of our section husker fans, he didn't get much of a foothold.

Met several parents of players after the game... Met Ben Martin's mother and father... I believe Ben is a 3rd string RFR Defensive Tackle... Saw Patrick Witts Grandpa and talked to him... Saw Quentin Castille uncle/aunt i believe.. Met the team bus after the game and hung out in that crowd..got some awesome pictures.

Talked and shook hands with Ricky Thernase...told him to kick USC tail.. he said that there was no doubt they were ready for them.. Saw Marlon Lucky.. stood right next to Buddy Wyatt Dline coach and shook hands with Quentin Castille, DJ Jones... It was a husker fan dream... never got this close at a home game...

Drive back to asheville was tough as dehydration was setting in and it was a good ride though cause we won.... i would have been hot and miserable if we lost.. but i was hot, miserable and a winner though :)

Homewood suites in Asheville is awesome to stay in if you get the chance...HUGE rooms, great breakfast...highly recommend!!!!!!

Any questions, feel free to buzz me.. i do have pics if u want them to be posted

What a terrific story, thanks for sharing! It is almost better when there are 'issues', as it makes for a very nice spin. Glad you had fun, very nice that the fans were great, and yes, would be sweet to see the pics!

Thanks, jauken!

Yea. I read that the crew was a mix of Big 12, ACC and Mountain West or something like that. I am not sure what experiment they were trying to put together, but I don't think it worked.

I have heard other Husker fan's that were there commenting on how NU's ends were getting held quite a bit. I realize that you can call holding on every play if you really want to, but it was kind of ridiculous at times.

Thanks for the writeup!

Deacon here. First, jauken - I'm sorry I missed you. I look forward to catching up on my next trip to Lincoln.

It was a great college football gameday. Very exciting for us to have Nebraska in town. Again, I salute WF and Nebraska for making this happen. Not many of the traditional powers would travel to Winston to play in a 32,000-seat stadium (ND has rebuffed us for decades now), but NU did it, and we appreciate it.

I enjoyed meeting a number of Husker fans on Friday and Saturday.

The crowd was great. Very spirited and excited, especially when all of us were wilting in 90-degree glaring heat. I wish it had been a night game! As Jauken said, it was "perfect storm" of having a big crowd, construction going on, and the heat . . .that made for a circus. The concession stuff was terrible, without question. We're used to that size crowd (we averaged 32,500 last year, just below what we had on Saturday), but it was just a mismanagement situation. Sorry to all those whose game experience was affected by that stuff.

Congrats to the Huskers for a hard-fought win. We've very disappointed here, but also know that we lost to a good team and that we still have an opportunity to have a great season.

Go Huskers the rest of the way! And join us again in Winston-Salem anytime you can.

Deac/jason.. You guys were WONDERFUL hosts... i took great pleasure in emailing the Wake Forest president and alumni via the contact webpage and telling them how awesome we got treated by your students and fans... I must have had 50 people tell me good game or welcome to the campus...

If you get a chance Jason, please pass on this sentiment from Husker Nation that we are greatful for how we were treated!!

Awesome close game... you guys proved whyyou were the ACC champions and have nothing to be ashamed of.. Only thing i would question is your temperature :) It HAD to be 95 :) the temp after the game was 92 on campus :) GAWD IM STILL DEHYDRATED :)

Stay in touch!!!!! if you ever need anything..let us know!!!!

REALLY sorry I missed these two events. Never even thought about trying to hunt down the bus before the game, and after - well all we had on our minds was to get back to our own cooler where we had plenty of water and Tylenol for the onrushing heat headache. Would have loved to say hi to Ty and give a message to him for his dad, who I hung with in 1987 when he was in preseason Oiler camp.

On the other hand, we were opposite you and had the pleasure of getting somewhat personal UP! signals from the team during the game, and had them all right in front of us with the band after, this time THEY were applauding US for being SO DAMN LOUD! Choked me up a little....
