Two Nebraska football players told the Journal Star that a team meeting has been scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday.

All current players, including this year’s seniors, received text messages on Monday afternoon from football AD Tim Cassidy inviting them to attend.

The players spoke on the condition of anonymity. They said there was no indication as to what the meeting was about.

This comes on a day when another private airplane from Nebraska found an Atlanta runway, adding to the speculation surrounding the search for the Huskers’ next head football coach.

This time, it was the plane of Howard Hawks, University of Nebraska regent and substantial donor to the athletic program. It left Omaha’s Eppley Airfield this morning, landing in Atlanta just before noon.

A plane owned by the NU Foundation left Lincoln for Omaha earlier Monday, arriving 20 minutes prior to the departure of Hawks’ plane.

On Sunday, Nebraska interim athletic director Tom Osborne and chancellor Harvey Perlman took a private plane from Lincoln to Baton Rouge, La., and then apparently on to Atlanta in pursuit of a football coach.

Why Atlanta?

It’s the site of Parker Executive Search. The Journal Star learned on Saturday that the search firm was assisting Osborne in the coaching search.

Louisiana State defensive coordinator Bo Pelini has already interviewed for the job, two sources told the Journal Star, and it’s believed Turner Gill has, too.

On Sunday, Osborne contacted Buffalo athletic director Warde Manuel asking for permission to interview Gill, the second-year Bulls’ head coach.

A source says Osborne plans on interviewing four coaches on the trip.

So, the big question: There’s Gill, Pelini. Who might be the other two?

Jim Grobe, 55-year-old Wake Forest coach, is receiving plenty of buzz as someone interim athletic director Tom Osborne might take a look at.

The Journal Star left a phone message with Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman. The call was returned by the school’s assistant athletic director for media relations, Steve Shutt.

No comment, he said. No denial, either.

“Our policy is not to comment on personal matters,” Shutt said. “We’re just doing what’s in the best interest of program.”

Wake Forest’s assistant athletic director for football, Bill Faircloth, said Grobe was not in the office Monday morning. But Faircloth said that’s not unusual on a Monday with no game the following Saturday.

Grobe was scheduled to be at a 5 p.m. coaches meeting in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Faircloth said he’s not surprised that teams would come after Grobe.

“Nebraska’s a heckuva job, but you had better win a lot of games to keep ’em (the fans) happy,” Faircloth said.

Grobe, who last year guided the Demon Deacons to the ACC championship, just signed a 10-year contract extension with Wake Forest in February.

Other names that have been tossed about as potential replacements for the fired Bill Callahan include Boise State’s Chris Petersen, Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly and Texas Christian’s Gary Patterson.

Petersen told the Idaho Statesman on Monday he has not recently been contacted about any job opportunities, but he would listen.

“It would just probably depend on the situation,” Petersen told the Statesmen. “The only reason I say that is you never say never.”

According to the Statesmen, Petersen just got a raise that makes the last four years of his contract worth a guaranteed $935,000 a year.

Kelly, meanwhile, had an end-of-the season interview with Cincinnati’s athletic director Mike Thomas scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Kelby Siler, associate athletic director for communications at Cincinnati, said Kelly was not into discussing job rumors.

“He doesn’t want to talk about it,” Siler said.

A source said Patterson was on the recruiting trail Monday.

Patterson does have a connection with Parker Executive Search. Minnesota last season used the search firm when trying to hire a football coach.

Patterson was reportedly the Gophers’ No. 1 choice. He turned the job down.

And when might Osborne’s and Perlman’s little expedition be over?

A secretary at Perlman’s office answered the phone just before 2 p.m. on Monday.

“I haven’t been told where he is today,” she said. “He’s out of the office for the day.”

She said she didn’t expect him back in the office Monday.

There is a thread about this is both forums. Considering the possible scope of the meeting and the reason it is being talked about is directly related to the coaching search, I am going to close this thread and link the other.:

Continue the discussion there.

As the description says, the Rumorville forum is for much more than rumors.
