Pelini: You can't play just one guy

While plenty of discussions will no doubt be had by Husker fans about who should start at I-back after Roy Helu's dynamite performance, NU's head coach isn't all that worried about that topic.

"Who starts the game doesn't really matter to us," Bo Pelini said on Sunday. "All three of them have been productive. We feel good about the whole group. I really don't care, and the kids don't care who's out there on the first snap. It's about the guy who's hot, you got to go with. You go with the hot hand. And we got three capable guys. The bottom line is in this day and age you can't just play one guy all the time because they'll get worn out."

Helu put up 176 total yards against Kansas. Quentin Castille saw limited touches but had a good day when he got the ball, picking up 66 total yards and averaging a 11 yards a touch against KU.

Marlon Lucky threw for a touchdown against the Jayhawks, but was apparently bothered by a toe injury. He had 10 total yards on eight touches.

For those who think NU should settle on one guy, offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said Saturday he is just fine with how it is. During most of his coaching career, he's used several backs to get the job done.

He reminds of his time at Colorado. Chris Brown entered that game against Nebraska in 2001 as CU's third guy, but showed what fresh legs could do when he scored six touchdowns against the Huskers.

Most teams are going with multiple backs around the league, he said.

“We don’t have a script this is the way it’s going to be,” Watson said. “When you have three kids like we do, we can spread it out and go with the hot hand. There’s nothing wrong with having three guys that run the football. Trust me. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
