NORMAN, Okla. - A numbers lesson from Big 12 women's basketball.

* Zero is greater than any number if it appears in your loss column on Feb. 24.

* 54 combined points for two players on your team is a good thing.

* When you're trying to pull the upset on your home court, you need to shoot better than 58.3 percent (14-of-24) percent from the free throw line and 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from 3-point range.

* Outscoring your opponent 18-1 on their home court over the final three and a half minutes usually assures a victory.

Those are some of the ways in which we can count how third-ranked Nebraska ran away from No. 11 Oklahoma Wednesday night. The Cornhuskers clinched the Big 12 Conference regular-season women's title with a 80-64 victory over the Sooners.

"It's amazing and unreal to think about," Nebraska's Kelsey Griffin said when asked about the conference crown. "As hard as we worked, we deserved it. I'm gonna celebrate with an ice-cold Diet Coke and it's gonna taste great."

It's the first Big 12 title and the school's first since 1988 when it won the old Big Eight Conference. With three more victories, Nebraska (26-0, 13-0) can become the second team to go undefeated in the Big 12. Oklahoma ran the table in 2006.

"This game was a microcosm of our season," said Nebraska coach Connie Yori, whose team was picked to finish sixth in the coaches' pre-season poll. "This team has shown great toughness, incredible focus and desire."

She paused 10 seconds to collect herself.

"I cried a lot during (her 1-15 first season at Nebraska)," Yori eventually said. "Tonight, I've been going back and forth between crying and laughing."

The laughter was generated thanks to senior post players Kelsey Griffin and Cory Montgomery. Griffin scored a season-high 30 points with 13 rebounds. Montgomery scored 34 and made four-of-eight 3-pointers. They scored 19 of the Huskers last 24 points.

Oklahoma (19-8, 9-4) coach was asked what happened during Nebraska's 18-1 game-winning run over the last 3:34.

"Kelsey Griffin and Cory Montgomery took over, that's exactly what happened," she said. "They were tougher and stronger than we were down the stretch."

The only significant play that didn't involve Griffin or Montgomery was Yvonne Turner's steal and three-point play with 2:57 remaining that gave Nebraska a 67-63 lead.

"That was the biggest play of the game," Griffin said. "It shows how mentally tough she is. She wasn't having that great a game on offense but she dug in on defense and made a big steal."

Turner picked up two fouls in the first 1:17 and spent the rest of the first half on the bench. She was expected to guard Oklahoma's Danielle Robinson. Reserves Nicole Neals and Kala Kuhlman took Turner's minutes and at halftime Nebraska had a 33-29 lead.

"You don't win with just five players," Yori said.

You also can't upset third-ranked teams shooting 37.4 percent. The Sooners had plenty of close-in opportunities they didn't convert. Nyeshia Stevenson was 2-of-12 from the field and at least six of those misses were layups or drives. Nebraska outscored OU on 3-pointers 21-6.

Here's another number to close this out. Defending national champion and top-ranked Connecticut, which hasn't lost since the Eisenhower Administration, came to the Lloyd Noble Center and defeated Oklahoma 76-60, on Feb. 15.

Ten days later, Nebraska won here by the same 16-point margin. Draw your own conclusions and comparisons.
