Maybe he was late in getting noticed or seen, perhaps grades are an issue. I dont know why but those are two pretty big offers to start with!

He's from SC, give him a break - I'm sure people were saying the same thing when Stein chose nebraska in 2008. We weren't exactly top-notch then that's for sure. (the difference being SC won't be top notch any time soon)
