uh, there was a lot more than seven notes for Beethoven to use

 

In any given scale there are 7 distinct notes. There are 12 distinct notes total.

 

in any diatonic scale there are only 7 pitch classes, yes. However, there are other scales that have more. Some could argue that you could classify each note as it's own separate frequency. Therefore on an instrument like a piano Beethoven would have had 88 individual notes to choose from.

 

Still, I was more commenting on Lou's statement that Beethoven only had seven notes to use...when chromatically he had a full 12 to use.
