Price Playing Like a Veteran Despite Young Age

Recommended Posts

Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong said Monday that fourth-year Husker guard Givens Price is playing like “one of the veteran guys.”

Which is good, Armstrong reasoned, since he figured Price was still “probably the youngest guy on the team.”

Not quite. Not anymore. Price, who essentially skipped two grades before enrolling at Nebraska in 2011 when he was 16, is now 19. He'll turn 20 in October. And he's turned the corner, he said, as an offensive lineman.

“We're all men out here,” Price said after practice Monday. “We're all one team. You can be 21, you can be 17, and if you're good enough, you're going to play.”

A quick glimpse at NU's spring practices confirms as much. Price works at right guard with the top unit, and he'll compete with fifth-year senior Mike Moudy for the starting job next fall. He's looked particularly adept while pass-blocking, showing good chemistry with right tackle Zach Sterup, who also arrived in 2011. Price said he's now “consistent” instead of “complacent.” The 6-foot-4, 305-pound junior has put on 25 pounds since arriving in Lincoln. He said he's faster, stronger and smarter.

I was always intrigued by Price, being a part of the vaunted O-line class of 2010 but being the least talked about. Even though he was so young, he must have a good bit of talent to be offered that scholarship as a 16 year old, but he obviously must be very smart. Figured it would take two or three years just to get him on the field so he could physically mature into his role, but I hope he is ready to make some solid contributions.
