Eric the Red Posted May 11, 2006 Share Posted May 11, 2006 AP The Associated Press has ranked college football teams since the first poll was released on October 19, 1936. Including pre-season polls (which began in 1950), the A.P. has released 938 polls from the 1936 season to the 2005 season. On January 6, 1948 there was a special post bowl poll between Notre Dame and Michigan. The A.P. ranked Michigan #1 and Notre Dame #2. However, the postseason poll did not supersede the final regular season poll of December 6, 1947 in which Notre Dame was crowned the National Champion. That poll is not counted as one of the 938 polls released since it only was for two teams. The chart below lists only the current schools playing in Division 1-A. There have been several schools, other than the current 119 Division 1-A schools, to be included in the AP rankings. Of those schools only Cornell has managed to be ranked #1 and they have been ranked #1 in four different polls. The last being on November 5th, 1940. Of the current Division 1-A schools, 100 have found their way into at least one ranking and 19 have never been ranked. Quote Link to comment
