AR Husker Fan
Quarterback Flutie retires after 21-year career Mon May 15, 1:33 PM ET BOSTON (Reuters) - Doug Flutie, who overcame his diminutive size by using his scrambling ability and leadership skills to play quarterback for 21 pro football seasons, retired on Monday from the New England Patriots. The 43-year-old played 12 seasons in the NFL, one season in the United States Football League and eight campaigns in the Canadian Football League to prove wrong the skeptics who did not think he could make it professionally. Flutie, 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, captured national acclaim in 1984 by throwing a long, last-second touchdown that gave Boston College a 47-45 victory over the University of Miami, the defending national champions. It helped him win the Heisman Trophy as outstanding U.S. collegiate player. He played his first pro season with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL in 1985, before joining the Chicago Bears and then the New England Patriots. After seeing limited action with the Patriots in 1989, Flutie moved north, signing with the British Columbia Lions to become the highest paid player in the CFL. In eight seasons in the CFL, Flutie was named the league's most outstanding player six times and led his teams to three Gray Cup championships. Flutie returned to the NFL in 1998 and became the starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills for two seasons. He later started for the San Diego Chargers in 2001. Last season, Flutie returned to the Pats but appeared in just five games. He finished with a flourish, however, converting the league's first drop kick for an extra point since the 1941 championship game. In his NFL career, Flutie threw for 14,715 yards and 86 touchdowns and 68 interceptions. LINK Quote Link to comment
