FEC Near Shutdown, just in time for 2020 Elections

Recommended Posts

The FEC is close to a shutdown, as they don't have a quorum and can't meet. They don't have a quorum and can't meet because Congress won't discuss replacement appointments to the retiring Vice Chairman, even in spite of Trump nominating his own lackey candidate, Trey Trainor.

People (generally Republicans) are saying this is a non-issue, as the laws on the books have a statue of limitations of five years. But other folks see what this ultimately means for the upcoming Presidental election:

But Meredith McGehee, executive director of Issue One, a campaign reform group, isn't so sure they will [follow the law]. "It's kind of like saying there's a law against robbing banks," she said. "Ninety-nine point nine percent of the population will still not rob a bank if there wasn't a policeman. But there's always that element there that's going to be looking for an opportunity to get away with it.

"And I think what's really different about politics is that there's both so much gray area and there is political disagreement about the laws anyway."

So...how concerned should we be that there's not even a fox to guard the hen house?

Just so I'm clear on this.

A federal investigation and every intelligence agency in the country agrees that the Russians influenced (illegally) the 2016 election.  They also have said they are continuing to try to influence the 2020 election.  Those efforts include attempts to hack state election systems.  Those efforts have been shown to support one candidate....the President.  The President repeatedly has denied the Russians are doing what they are doing.  He openly and publicly took the word of the dictator of that country instead of believing his own intelligence community.

Now....the organization that is responsible for keeping the election organized and safe is about to shut down due to lack of congress's efforts to fill the board.

Am I close on this?

What a time to be alive!!!!

If Putin sticks to what he's done in the past, they'll support and attack more than one candidate just to sow more confusion, but the majority of their efforts will be to get a particular outcome (probably helping Trump).
