Trump & War Crimes

Recommended Posts

We all know about Trump's affinity for Putin, Erdogan, and MBS. But what is going on with this recent pardoning of war criminals?

Army 1st Lt. Clint Lorance was convicted of two counts second degree murder in the death of two Afghans and attempted murder.

  •  Nine of Lorance’s soldiers testified in 2013 that the first lieutenant ordered them to shoot at three unarmed Afghans.

Army Maj. Mathew Golsteyn faced murder charges next year for a similar crime.

  • Admitted to CIA interviewers during a polygraph test that he had killed an alleged Afghan bomb-maker and later conspired with others to destroy the body.
  • During an interview with Fox News, Golsteyn again admitted to a version of the incidents involving the killing of the alleged Afghan bomb-maker.

Special Warfare Operator Chief Edward Gallagher was recently acquitted of a string of alleged war crimes.

  • Three Navy SEALs witnessed him fatally stab a non-combative, wounded ISIS fighter who had been brought to him for medical treatment.
  • He threatened to kill anyone who spoke about it.
  • Three more SEALs witnessed Gallagher shoot two civilian non-combatants — an old man and a young girl.
  • Gallagher's fellow SEALs became so disturbed with his killings of civilians that they tampered with his sniper rifle to make it less accurate, and would also fire warning shots at civilians to prevent Gallagher from shooting at them.
  • Trump reversed his demotion.
  • Trump has now called for Prosecutors to be stripped of their medals.

Army Lt. Michael Behenna was convicted of killing an unarmed suspected al Qaeda captive who had been stripped naked before being shot.

  • USA Today noted it was "the first presidential pardon of a convicted murderer in modern history." (Lorance would soon become the second?)

What is the angle here? I haven't heard much defense for any of these actions.

They didn't get captured, so they are winners in his book.

It appears old Bone Spurs prefers to be known as the military president and not the law and order president under the mistaken belief that pardoning some criminals will garner and solidify the red meat 'patriotic vote'.   Yet anyone wt a brain should be able to see that his actions actually undermine the military by cutting in half the chain of command and the authority that rests in that chain of command.  Trump's action now allows the criminal element in the military (criminal/self serving individuals are found in all sectors of society) to brush aside the rules of engagement and the authority invested in the commanders.  To me, these pardons, are a disparate act by a disparate President to solidify his base before the election.

I expect more of these kind of actions.  I heard a report on NPR this morning in which it is reported that if Trump had his way, he would cut our ties with NATO.  The re-election of Trump would embolden him even more to do this - to leave NATO - which would play directly into his puppet master's hand- to Putin's delight.  If Trump is re-elected and even more so after the failure of the Senate to convict him, a Trump second term could be very scary.
