1. While practicing to learn and manage his Offense!
2. I agree. Pelini said we are going to get the personnel in there that can get the quarterback to the ground. We were in position to do so a few times and didn't get it done. So Pelini is using the excuse that the most athletic players are on the bench? Wasn't this the excuse last year? If we can't get a sack against Wyoming what is going to happen in BIG play? Seven or 8 replays of the CCG if something doesn't change in this passive scheme. These games are when we need to empty the bench of the "better, more athletic" kids and get them experience prior to conference play. IMHO, the Fresh and younger kids played better than some of the seniors on D.
3. Scared? No. Read posts on the thread. People are acting scared that their OC is a genius. People talk about the Wyoming game being so close because of their HC. BS. ie the Title of this thread. We should never be in the position that some bottom level program tests anything, but our back ups. I am tired of the excuses that the game was close because of the brain trusts employed by these schools. If this is true ie "geniuses" get more bang for their buck with "lesser" talent then it this proves the point that we should have spent the big money to get these "gurus" to NU. Imagine if we had some of the recognized "gurus" here with our talent and facilities.
4. Good stuff. I agree that Cross looked the best of the backs, IMHO. For game one. AA appeared a little less decisive than last year and didn't appear as "nifty". Agree about Gerry and Bando. More seasoning and I think they will be very good. Thought the same about Zaire. Why not bring in the "better" athletes in the dime and nickel to get the best on the field. Kind of like Hagg and the Peso.
5. Talent wins. That's why there has been an increased focus on our recruiting the past two years. My point being that we are now scared of tune up games because of the rep of their DC/OC/HC. Sad IMO. We should have gone out and sent Wyoming home with a paycheck, zero points on the board and a desire to never play NU again.
6. For 2-3 years I really thought this was by design until I realized we play so vanilla because we really are vanilla in the grand scheme of things. We do not have any exotic packages or stunts.
7. I agree. Our opponents pressure TM, and he has led the nation in turnovers for 3 years in a row. Pressure causes problems. This. UT (IIRC) gave the nation the template to beat our O. Get in Martinez face each and every play. This was in 2010 IIRC. Year 4 and teams still do this. Three years leading the nation in fumbles is not a coincidence, to a degree, it is by design. Get after any QB, no matter how good and mistakes are made. UCLA gave the nation a template to exploit our defensive schemes. No matter how good our DB's are, no one can cover a receiver for 5 seconds. He either gets free or the DB gets physical and gets the PI call. a lose-lose. Watching our DL, I believe that the object is not to get to the QB, but simply allow the back seven to make plays. We need to be attacking in which the front 7 make plays and the back 4 are there for the pass. VV looked like a beast (double teamed and held on every play) Moss, Gregory etc as well. Turn these kids lose and let them beat some a$$. Nothing gets the D going like flattening the QB for a 10 yrd loss or stuffing the RB in the whole. Allowing 1 or 2 OL to get to our "smallish" LB's in space is a miss match not even Bama could over come.
8. I wish I could find the article from around 2009 ref a comment from SUH. It was in regards to how pass happy the Big XII version of the spread was. Defenses running squared, couldn't stop it etc.... It was in spring or fall that SUH said Pelini had something new that would shut it down. He did and it did. This is the Pelini we need back. The defensive guru who can create a whole new scheme to stifle opponents. Maybe, it doesn't work in reverse ie they exploit you, but you can't stop them. Who knows. I know that he figured something out before (and relatively quickly) I just am lost as to why we have seen the same issues since moving to the B1G. Needs to get fixed or we are in for one long season.
9. Yep. Worried about tune up games. How far have we really fallen when we begin to make excuses because their team has a genius DC or OC. To get this straight, the board seems to agree that a defensive/offensive guru with lesser talent can give/beat a team with better talent.................imagine if we had one of these on our staff.
10. On another note, did Martinez look really lethargic the whole game. I had to watch it on B1G to go online so it wasn't the greatest, but he really looked slow
11. Dabo became the HC in 2009. Since then he is 40-21 overall. Been to the ACC CG twice and won 1. He has won or played for 3 Atlantic division titles. 2 years top 15 BCS final standings and signature wins over LSU and UGA. He also has the two highest paid coordinators in college football. (Morris and Venables) Not too mention back to back 10 win seasons. He knew he needed the experienced staff to help him and he got it. Wife is a Clemson grad so my 2nd team I follow.
12. Is Zaire fast enough to play nickel or peso. Big enough to reprise Super D from 2003? Seems too good an athlete to not be on the field because the O runs a spread style O.
13. This^. Since UCLA, any team with skill set has game planned our inability to cover the middle when a guy goes in motion or drags across on a delay. Agree, it's not players. No one in the middle is a faulty scheme OR players who in game after game continually play wrong. The scheme is flawed and tems are feasting on this. No matter how ound or thletic our guys are, you can't stop a play without a body there. Crouch said in an earlier interview that the offensives of today, scheme to go where the defense is not. We are not covering the run as we patty cake 4 on 6 and the LB get run off on the motion.. They all attack wherer we are not. The middle. Again and again and again.
14. The 602 is total yards. Pelini's teams have consistently been leaders in pass defense. Our defense will gel as a unit over the next game or two as Pelini and Pap get the chess pieces in place. I should have prefaced that. 219 on the ground (30-219) and 383 through the air. Either way, I can't see any way to find solace in those numbers. They are horrific. Looked at individually or in the totality. This is Wyoming. I can't believe how far we as a fan base ave fallen, when this is ok and we continually point to the defensive genius that is Bo. I am baffled by the thought he owns 4-10 of the worst performances EVER. Hell, Cosgrove only owns 2. Also Smith put up the 4th highest yardage total in History against the Huskers and Wyoming got 35 first downs. Again, the most against the Huskers............. I am sure (I hope) that Bo realizes he is facing some serious issues as it relates to his defensive calls. I am behind Bo. 100%. He is our coach. I admire his commitment to Darlington, the way he runs the program and his support of team Jack. BUT he needs to re-evaluate our defensive scheme. Time to scale it back, dumb it down and let the guys just go hat on hat. Switch to a zone at times to confuse the O. I am just tired of teams putting up Madden like numbers against our D and teams saying they knew what our D was going to do prior to it or like Wisky saying it was the easiest D to game against. This is friggin NEBRASKA. Time to get back that apply foot to neck and press mentality. Either Enunwa or SJB said when we got the lead they all went into "relax" (not his words) mode. The staff needs to keep these guys focused and intense. I do not know if I have witnessed a complete 4 quarters from this team under Bo yet...........
15. Smith not the only player to say this. IIRC, last year several teams said the same thing.
16. Bama. And their DC is one of the best in the biz and getting paid over 1 million to do it. Clemson pay Venables over 1million. I am seeing a theme here............ Yes. The theme is pay someone and that makes them good!???????? No. Bama and Clemson (to name just 2) went after proven coordinators and too date it is showing success. We, on the other hand, promoted from within, two guys, with little (being gracious) to no experience. We are seeing the results. Beck made some bone headed calls Sat. If Bo calls the D (like some suspect) then why do we have Paps? IMO, when we give up 600 yrds per game in our last 3, that is an issue. When opponents seem to use similar games plans to beat us, that is a problem. When Bo owns 4 of the 10 worst D performances, that is an issue. Bama played 11 Fresh last year. OSU and UM played 16. I am tired of the excuses, youth, new conference, over looking opponents, Smith made awesome plays and is a Hypesman contender etc...... We make too many teams look like world beaters. I still haven't forgotten getting mauled by Wisky and their 3rd string QB. I know we had a DE as a DT because of injuries, but who develops the depth and recruits to the needs (present and future) of the team. We have some serious issues. Wyoming a team ranked 90th in rushing last year hung 602 yrds on us. This same team ran 78 plays and was only in 3rd down 8 times. 8 times.............
17. Yes but the same scheme held opponents to major lows in 2009 and 2010. The scheme is not to blame...period. So opponents have four years of film on it, and they've figured out how to defeat it. They adapted, and now it's up to Bo & Co. to adapt as well. Football is a game of adjustments. From series to series, half to half, game to game and year to year. You cannot do the same thing over and over and expect it to always work. Not only this, but 2009 and 2010 we were in the Big XII. The match coverage worked because of SUH and the QB's in the Big XII spread play differently than the dual threat guys we see in the B1G. Like Knapp said, BO busted out the Peso and found a way to "shut down" the spread. OC's saw this and schemed to defeat this. They have. To the tune of 600+ yrds in our last 3 games. To the tune of 4 out of 10 "most yards allowed" have occurred on Bo's watch. His scheme needs to change. It is not working. UCLA drove that plan into the ditch and has shown every team how to beat us. Had Wyoming had better talent and depth, last night would have been a "L".
18. Bama. And their DC is one of the best in the biz and getting paid over 1 million to do it. Clemson pay Venables over 1million. I am seeing a theme here............
19. Maybe a dozen times out of, what, 78 plays? The vast majority of the time it was the same ol' patty-cake we've grown accustom to. They were 1-8 on 3rd downs. That would lead me to believe that the majority of their 600+ yrds was done on 1st or 2nd down. Think about that. 1-8 on third down. They ran 78 plays and were only in 3rd downs on 8 plays. This is Wyoming, not some top 10 or up and coming program. Our scheme sux unless you have the likes of SUH, Prince and others, BUT this was against the pass happy Big 12, not the dual threat QB's or "traditional O's" we see in the B1G. Call me stupid, but year 6 and Bo owns 4-10 of our most yards allowed and I would say we have a problem.
20. This is equally if not more important to figure out as getting pressure on the quarterback and disrupting an offensive rhythm. It's not just this year, either - it's been a consistent problem the last three. Opponents continually find ways to attack the middle of NU's defense for huge chunks of yards. The D-line isn't getting penetration or disrupting the LOS, which allows opposing running backs access to NU's second level defense where there's no linebacker in position to make an early tackle. NU is obviously young at the most important part of the defense - the front seven. But, 600 yards? To Wyoming? Slice it any way you like - that's unacceptable. I trust Pelini knows how to coach a defense, but be it talent, experience, or his assistants, there's something wonky there and it's worse than it should be. Offense had their issues last night, but this one is mostly on the D. Just look at the drive chart for Wyoming. They suffered one three and out. Just one. Then there's a smatter of six play drives, five play drives, eight plays, seven plays, six plays, eight plays... It goes beyond Cosgrovian. Crouch or Bennig said last night against spread teams (when we have one LB) they will motion or delay a drag across the middle. If the LB goes on the motion, they run counters to the hole. If the LB stays, they were delaying the RB or TE to hold until the LB commits and then drop their guy into the middle. Even against traditional teams, they find ways to motion or line up that has our LB's in our match schemes pull themselves right out of the plays. Last night, IMO, Gerry's speed and athleticism allowed him to get back and make some plays. Much like David a few years ago. He was athletic enough to succeed IN SPITE OF the scheme we use.
21. This^. Year 6 it is not the following top excuses: Not BO's staff New coordinators Not Bo's players New Year in Conference Guys not recruited for this type of XXXXXXXX Not athletic Not big enough/fast enough The BS excuses are over. It is a coaching/scheme issue plain and simple. Bo and this staff need to own up and fix it. I am sick of hearing that guys were in position, they just didn't execute. Benning and Crouch did a great last night showing over and again how the man match with safety "brackets" opens ourselves to issues. now imagine we play a team with a) depth and b) better talent Offenses evolve and D's need to evolve with it. We haven't. Bo now owns 4 of our top 10 blowouts and some thing its not scheme or coaching? Clemson knocked off LSU and UGA with the 2 highest paid coordinators in college. Not a coincidence........ If the staff refuses to make schematic changes, I can see us dropping 5-6 games and the staff (possibly Bo) being gone next year.
22. He also said that by "bracketing" which is the base of Bo's system allows the LB's to be run off and the middle of the field to always be open. Also said that when the safeties (one) comes up and leaves the other teams will audible into pass as we are saying "we are playing the run". We have the talent, per reports, but the scheme needs to change. 4 guys rushing 5-6 is always a losing proposition. Depends on your definition of "rushing". There was still a lot of patty-cake going on. Other than that, totally agree. HAHA! I should have said 4 guys trying to "contain" 5-6. I agree with your description more.

24. That Bo FINALLY realizes he needs to adjust the scheme of our D.
25. I don't get it. How do they not address this? Especially since money is not as issue for NU. Why do we hire unproven coaches and then give massive pay increases? NU should be looking for a top, defensive coach, and pay him a high salary, maybe more than Bo. If NU starts to lose, and the sellout streak ends, then money will be a huge issue, and other sports will also suffer. This has been going on for too long. The new AD needs to have a meeting with Bo. Clemson just knocked off UGA with the two highest paid assistants in football. Coincidence? Me thinks not!
