He should just be our starting RB at this point. While I was hopeful he was the clear starter after NW, I agree with all of your points. The ironic thing is, if you combine the 2 QBs in what they do well, that's exactly what we need lol. AM needs to be more decisive with his throws and run up the field quicker when the opp is there... Luke needs to learn the concept of a pocket presence and not getting happy feet. I was on the Luke train but its clear why other schools did not give him a serious look at QB. I say he should be our RB because that look of 2 AM and him in the backfield truly gave OSU something to think about. Why in the hell did we show this within minutes of the season yet haven't had a similar look since? Its clear that Frosty isnt giving up the QB read play...I'm baffled why he isn't scheming formations with both of them back there. Luke is too good of an athlete, as has been shown, to not be on the field. But its clear, QB is not the right spot for him now or long term (assuming he has NFL aspirations)

All valid... I feel like context is key here tho. Its not like AM is a fellow freshman and we don't quite know what we have. The fact of the matter is, 2AM doing half of what Luke did is EXACTLY what he did against northwestern and exactly what he did for the majority of last year. If these 2 had similar experience, and age, I'd fully agree with you that by no means was Luke's performance reassuring, if anything, there are more concerns particularly around our ability to pass. That being said, he's being compared to a guy who has had more than his fair share of opportunities to solidify the QB job and he didn't get it done. While I agree 2AM has a much better arm, something is off with the guy either in his ability to go through progressions or just a lack of mental confidence he can lead a receiver open. While I want more down field passes from Luke, I still would make the argument the offense just seems to have more of an edge with him out there compared to 2AM. Old adage still rings true, you dont have 2 starting QBs in a qb battle, typically you have 2 back ups that has major flaws preventing one of them from being the clear cut winner. Might not be pretty but i'll take the offense with Luke, for another week, over reverting back to an offense that looks more disjointed, slower, and one that has too weird of an obsessions moving the ball sideways instead of north and south like we've seen for 2.5 years now under 2AM

If yesterday is Luke's absolute ceiling the rest of the way then most likely Smothers will win the QB job, perhaps as soon as next year.

How much of this tho is on frost and an inept offense leaving em hung out to dry in the 2nd half? don’t get me wrong, this defense is still a major work in progress, imho, but it’s definitely shown improvement in areas (more so than the offense has in 3 years) frankly, I don’t think this defense is going to take a massive jump until we get a guy who can simply get pressure by himself.. the one thing that makes me cringe is chins calls way too many safety/corner blitzes where the guy doesn’t have a shot at the qb because it’s too delayed or he’s too far back in coverage and doesn’t even come close to getting to qb. He’s gotta bring pressure cause we don’t have the guys yet on the d line/olb that’s a beast solo- yet many a times he’s drawing up these plays that don’t put pressure yet opens up more windows in coverage... baffling

Lol, bro. He was trash man. He wouldn’t have that pick on his record if he didn’t have a horrendous display of decision making on a pass thrown a second too late. The guy can’t lead receivers open if his life depended on it and he takes so long to make up his mind by the time it gets to a receiver all of 3 yards past the line of scrimmage but 15 yards in the flat, the wr is tackled immediately and can’t do a thing. If this was the second bad game I get it, but this is the same inconsistent crap we saw last year. The guy clearly hasn’t improved at all and coaches/defenses now have tape on the guy- literally all of his passing stats have declined each year: If we lose this game we’re gonna go 12 months without a damn win. You’re right about one thing, passing success isn’t everything but IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AS A QB. Even his running, he takes too long to run and would rather juke his way for 3-5 yards then take a for sure 6-7. While it’s not 100% on him, QB is literally the most valuable position in all of sports due to strong correlation historically between a teams success and the level of play at QB. Real question- what would you actually need to see for you to say it’s time to make a change?

I think the key difference though is we’ve been seeing this sub par junk from Martinez now for the past 2 seasons (this year and last), both of which have been a clear regression compared to year 1. There’s a saying in football, when there’s a qb battle typically you don’t have 2 starting qbs you have none... while Luke most likely isn’t a world beater who’s gonna save the day, I’d argue the unknown upside is why we need to give him the reigns given 2AM now has had opportunity after opportunity after opportunity to win the job, and he hasn’t. last thing I want to see happen is we waste a development year sticking with AM because, in paper, he should be the starter yet we witness another inconsistent output from the guy without knowing what we actually have in Luke
