  1. I would rather our DBs stick with the receivers and remain in position to make a play on the ball or tackle the receiver than trying to turn to find the ball and losing the receiver. I would hope every player is busting his butt each week during the season. The season's not that long. If a player can't bring it during the season I hate to think of how much slacking goes on from January to August. This is terrible news. Why is this tolerated by the coaches?
  2. Ok so... what do Starkville and Oxford have that Lincoln doesn't?Historically crappy football programs?
  3. MS State has beaten 3 straight Top 5 teams. Their schedule is brutal. That's the ONLY reason why they might not finish high in the polls. Neither LSU nor Texas AtM are "Top 5 teams." They're barely top 25 teams. That's the problem with early polls.
  4. Nebraska was ranked #5 after five games in 2010. Being highly ranked early in the season isn't that difficult. Let's see where they're ranked at the end. My guess is quite a bit down the ladder.
  5. Well, Purdue just took Michigan State into the fourth quarter before a game-sealing pick 6 put MSU up by two scores late. Michigan State didn't look like world beaters in that game. That was sorta discouraging. If Nebraska had come out against MSU with just a little better plan to open up the run and a little less timidity on offense we could have won. Oh well. On the other hand, that also shows that we can't overlook any team, not even Purdue. It is not going to be easy going 11-1. There's a reason it hasn't happened for 13 years.
  6. Yep, that's one thing I didn't like about Asante: the PIs every game. Both he and Stafford seemed to show up only for some games, and go missing for others. Both were hard hitters, but when they missed it turned into big plays. My enduring memory of Stafford is getting beat over and over against Wisconsin in the CCG. Probably not his fault entirely, but still... I think both played or are playing in the NFL, so maybe it was more a function of their immaturity, or the scheme, or whatever. Matt O'Hanlon was a great safety. Roach reminds me of O'Hanlon- a Nebraska kid who may be a little less athletically gifted but who works his ass off. I love players like that. If my choice is have the blackshirt shirt-handing-out-tradition in tact, or have the defense playing like blackshirts, I'll chose the latter. Generally, the defense has improved enormously since Bo returned in 2008. To me, that's what is important. I think he tried too hard with the shirts to make it meaningful again and ended up overcomplicating it. I agree with you, just hand them out to the starters in practice and call it good. Overall, the defense's mentality is probably as fixed as it's going to be.
  7. I would give Cooper a pair of arms. Has he wrapped up on a tackle all year, or is the plan just to keep spearing opponents? Its how he plays. I never really bought into Cooper as a star safety. He isn't very fast, and he runs very stiff. Gerry is a fluid athlete back there and he is obviously a superior safety athletically. Cooper is Stafford 2.0, can't tackle but can hit if your served up on a platter Other than not using his arms, I don't have any complaints about Cooper. He's not mentioned too often during games, which could be good or bad, or both. I wasn't a big fan of Stafford, nor that dude from 2009, Larry Asante. Gerry is a stud. He is, in my opinion, one of the best defenders on the team: a fast as hell eraser.

  9. So cover up a possible rape or allow boosters to pay a player to come and play? No thank you. I'm perfectly fine recruiting kids from bad neighborhoods with some legal history, but what college football offers is the opportunity out of that life- not the opportunity to bring that life along to college. I think that's what Osborne tried to do- offer those kids an opportunity out- and then tried to make sure those players got the extra help they needed to be successful. Often it worked. Sometimes it didn't. But you never cover up for them, and you don't pay them. Ever.
  10. At least it won't be too hard to chase him down.
  11. I thought the photo was hilarious. It wouldn't bother me a bit if it were players who took and posted it. I imagine it gets frustrating hearing from former players about how the current players aren't doing it right or doing well enough. That said, the film doesn't lie. Rushing for 47 yards on 37 carries. Allowing 5 sacks. Our QB knocked down another 14 or so times. A bunch of O-line penalties and bad snaps. For a team that prides itself on running the ball and a dominant O-line, those stats are garbage.
  12. How will Ameer and the offense, particularly the O-line, respond to the frustrating night at MSU? That is the question before them. Will they pack it in and hang their heads, or will they come out on a mission to demonstrate that game that night was a fluke? Lot of football left to be played this season.
  13. hes clapping. Could you tell why? Was he doing the same thing as #43 of MSU?
  14. BTN Originals will debut its second feature-length documentary Unbeaten: The Life of Brook Berringer Saturday, Oct. 18 immediately following the Nebraska at Northwestern game on BTN. http://btn.com/unbeaten-the-life-of-brook-berringer/ There's a little more at the link.
  15. Somebody re-watch 01:38 in the 2nd Quarter and tell me what Randy Gregory is doing. He's lined up on the left side at DE (bottom of the screen).
  16. When will Nebraska go back to holding up its end of a Oklahoma-Nebraska rivalry? Nebraska hasn't even been that "Nebraska" for 15 years. Texas did their damnedest to have a terrific rivalry with us but we crapped our pants to the tune of 1 win and 9 losses. We're not ready for another Oklahoma, but maybe MSU will be our new Texas Tech.
  17. I disagree completely with this approach. "Getting up" for some opponents implies "being down" for others, which is exactly what our problem has been. Until this team approaches every game as a big game, every practice as a big practice, every workout as a big workout, etc., they'll continue losing four games a year. It's also not enough to come into game week trying to get ready to play. If that's what players are doing, that's another reason they're losing games. Preparation for this season and these games needed to begin on January 2. It needed to continue through Spring, Summer and Fall. At least that's what winning teams do.
  18. Shawn Eichorst should hire JP just to roam the halls down there knocking everybody's ego down a couple pegs. That will cure any complacency going on.
  19. Ok, I just went through and watched the plays deedsker pointed out in the other thread, as well as most of the fourth quarter, and I'm now of the opinion this made an enormous difference in the game. Our O-line looks a lot better when the defense isn't able to jump the snap and #43 is no longer allowed to induce QB-Center exchange problems. Crazy! Too bad we couldn't figure this all out earlier in the game. I hope we do get them in the CCG. Without the advantage of a) interfering with the snap, and b) knowing the cadence, we'll beat them.
  20. I just rewatched the ending and noticed this too, although I'm pretty sure NU had mostly switched to silent hand signals before this point. Also interesting, re-watch when Ryker Fyfe is in for the two-point try- he claps a bunch of times before the ball comes out, then seems surprised when it comes, botches the handoff, and ultimately walks off the field in apparent disgust. I think the coaches figured this all out sometime in the late third or early fourth quarter, and it helped change the complexion of the game.
  21. How much experience does Beck have as a division 1 QB coach? How about ganz? We literally have 2 guys who have zero experience as QB coaches coaching the most vital position in football. Look up and down our staff and you see a substantial amount of rookies or guys that hung out at lower levels for far to long because they weren't good enough for the big leagues If NU wants to compete at all nationally we have to have a top 10 staff first and foremost. We obviously aren't going to out recruit many southern schools so we better be willing to out coach them I agree with you. I don't believe Beck played QB though I've been unable to find what position he did play in college. Now, that's not necessarily a requirement, and I also think years of experience teaching the position can substitute for playing experience. But it seems our QBs are not getting the type of developmental position coaching they need. It could be that the players themselves are just not able to develop more or faster. Prior to last year, the sample size consists of Taylor Martinez who, I think we can all agree, was a special case. Armstrong is still only a sophomore with what- 13 games under his belt? It could be it's too early to tell if Armstrong will eventually develop into more of a complete QB and whether Beck's teaching of the position will be vindicated.
