  1. The Star Tribune's premier sports writer (Sid Hartman) is calling for the hiring of Frank Solich as its new coach.
  2. Most of the ESPN announcers are bone heads however, it sounds like Trev Alberts had it coming with his too big for his own britches antics. That being said, I would still like to see him come back even though we all know it will never happen. I also heard that Trev's ego may have gotten him in trouble at ESPN. But this morning I watched his interview with Dan Marino on CSTV. It was soooo much better than anything that Mark May, Lou Holtz, Desmond Howard, Todd Blackledge, or Lee Corso could have done. But I guess journalism isn't something ESPN is looking for in its college football coverage.
  3. I see in today's Strib that Sid is calling for the hiring of Frank Solich. On another note: I don't see how building a 50,000 seat on-campus stadium is going to solve the Gopher's football problems. That capacity will put the Gophers in 10th place in Big 10 capacity (in front of only Northwestern). If attracting southern football talent is a concern I would think playing inside would help recruiting and not hurt recruiting.
  4. Tommie: was this announced before or after Dan Barriero's Sunday Sermon show? I didn't get a chance to listen to it, but I bet Dan went on the rant-of-all-rants this weekend. He loved to pound Mason.
  5. And that game becomes the straw that breaks the camel's back. Glen Mason is fired by Minnesota on New Year's Eve. His ten year reign in Minnesota. Interesting note: the final two candidates for the Minnesota job was Mason and Frank Solich.
  6. ESPN fires a guy like Trev Alberts so they can feature a guy like Desmond Howard. The only thing worse was when they put Tony Dorsett on the Greatest Team Ever Challenge.
  7. I think Callahan has always "got it" when it came to OU. 2004 he kicks the field goal on the last play of the game to avoid the shutout. 2005 he has the slashing episode. 2006 he apologizes for not coaching better. I could be wrong, but I think Callahan looks at OU as the program he needs/wants to beat more than any other B12 team. He just seems more emotional about this game than the others.
  8. NU was emotionally spent from the TX game the week earlier. When OSU made their move NU couldn't respond.
  9. Agreed. The last thing we need to do is to burn up a scholorship on this guy.

I will watch a college football game on ESPN, but I refuse to watch any of their pre-game or post-game material. Yes, part of this is ESPN's Big 10 biase. Living in Big 10 country each Saturday morning begins with a minimum of three Big 10 games on TV. ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 all have 1100 B10 games. I hate this!! Now the real problem isn't ESPN. The real problem is that the Big 12 was unable to get a TV contract from ESPN. Until the B12 gets an ESPN TV contract the conference will always suffer a lack of coverage on that network. Its nice to have Fox competing against the ABC/ESPN duo, but let's face it: college football is a second class citizen on Fox (NFL #1) and you can tell by the announcing teams that are assigned to the typical Fox college football game. Brutal comes to mind.
  11. Go Cowboys - pound the Tide. There has been so much national level debate about Alabama and the coaching situation that I think it would be hard for the Tide players to concentrate on the bowl game. But then I remember how the NU players responded after the Solich firing. Anyway - I always root for the old Big 8 in bowl games.
  12. My vote goes to the recruiting coordinator - Watson. Organizing the effort is the key to getting a top-to-bottom quality class (which I think NU has this year). Its interesting that the year NU lost its "best recruiter" in Blake they are putting together a great recruiting class.
  13. I agree with this statement 100%. I haven't been to the Cotton Bowl since the late 1980's, but I still cannot believe its worse than the LA Coliseum. The worst football venue I've ever been in.
  14. What was Glenn's injury? I don't remember here exactly what it was. A sprained foot?
  15. FARVA Thanks for the extra support. I'll consider it pay back for 1986 when I attended the Cotton Bowl and cheered on your A&M team against Auburn and Bo Jackson. I had such a good time with the A&M fans that A&M became my favorite SWC team. Have a great time at the game. In addition to the GO BIG RED cheer we have another very complicated cheer: HUSKER POWER. I'm sure you'll catch on very quickly.
  16. This is the real issue. Who cares what offense or defense the Huskers run? It's all about winning games. And winning games is all about bringing talent into the system. Tommie Frazier would have been great in the system that West Virgiana runs. But if he hadn't been apart of 2 National Champsionships would it really have mattered?
  17. I'm excited about having a safety who will come up to the line of scrimmage and knock down a running back for a loss. A safety who will make a receiver pay for catching a ball in the middle of the field. Our safeties were not physical last year at all.
  18. My favorite chain remains this: Montana St beat Colorado
  19. Iowa over TX and KSU over Rutgers were big surprises. I would like to see Iowa beat TX, but it sure doesn't seem possible. 6-2 for the Big 12 - I think the league office would take that.
  20. I loved the fact that Barry Switzer said that if he was coaching college football today he would run the "Tom Osborne offense". Pretty high praise in my book. Much better than Herby asking, "did the 71 team pass the ball?"
  21. Remeber the old days when they used to show coaches on the sidelines during bowl games calling recruits? Is this practice still legal?
  22. I would disagree with the: "A review of Callahan's three years shows they haven't beat anybody they were not supposed to beat." comment. Without going back and reviewing every game of the last three years I can say that last year's Alamo Bowl victory was against a favored Michigan team. So there's one.
  23. My take is that anyone who shows up at the parking lot 20 minutes before the kickoff isn't a college football fan that I want to go to games with. Who shows up 20 minutes before kickoff and then complains about THE FANS?? This guy isn't a fan. He's going to the games for another reason. Just my take.
  24. The point Kirk should have made about the diffence between the 95 Husker team and the 01 Miami team was this: In 1995 Nebraska DESTROYED the SEC Champion. A team so good that many "experts" believed they would defeat the Huskers. The '01 Miami team beat a team that crawled into the NC game, and a team that didn't even win its conference championship.
