Or someone who maxed out athletically at high school sports so he had to work his ass off to get through school on his own without parental spoon feeding, debit cards or "allowance" and used the RA position and the free room and board to cover expenses on thier way to graduating Magna Cum Laude only to find themselves stuck every other weekend making sure that a$$hole$ that get drunk don't rape girls who might someday be your daugther.

While others have questioned your level of optimisim, I think this post is more a reflection of college football today -- scholarship limits and early outs for the NFL have leveled the playing field dramatically -- I think the odds of a team repeating as national champs in the next 10 years are very very low.

Will any other big time jobs open up? Assuming NU fires BC it's Michigan, Texas A & M & NU -- maybe the domino factor if Miles chases the Michigan job. Any other big schools about to pull the trigger ?? I heard a maybe on the UCLA job, but that is arguably a second tier football school.

9 wins is not out of the question at all -- 8 home games and non conference cup cakes except Virginia Tech I think -- plus the softer side of the South -- probably just depends on the definition of respectability.

What the hell are YOU talking about? Please point out from the posts before this one which of us were "bitching" about this article. Who is "hoping for a problem?" Seriously - where are you seeing this? I think he is saying that bad fan behavior by CU fans this year would help perpetuate one of the main things Husker fans love to complain about regarding the CU game -- let's face it, if CU fans acted nice and left Husker fans alone, would anyone say, "wow, it was great out this year" -- doubtful. Most would keep going on about the previous years of bad behavior because it is hard to admit others change for the better when there is so much emotion involved.

BC is a me guy -- I don't like how he, or any coach for that matter, refers to the team as "they" -- 'they played good at times.' or 'they practiced hard all week' blah blah. Leaders use "WE" -- 'we did not excute and game plan well enough' Listen to BC speak and count the number of times he uses "we" -- but don't hold your breath waiting, you'll pass out. I may just be on the Scout Team, but I'll question one theme from this post -- and it's not just this poster, but others too -- lots of feelings out here about wanting the team to play with passion, tradition, and pride. Having a chance to win and compete hard, never give up -- it's kind of the 'it's all we ask as fans' theme and I'm not buying into it much. It's about W's here, and at every other school, or at least the big time programs. It'll be a cold day in hell before I believe that Bo Pellini, BC, Turner Gill, Vince Lombardi or anybody else could coach NU to 3-9, 4-8 type seasons and fans would be happy cuz the the team played hard every game and had a chance to win each one. A little dose of reality along with the passion, tradition and pride would be nice to see occasionally cuz those kinda records on a regular basis get ANYONE a ticket out of Lincoln, including the next guy.

Well, who do you think did it?? Not TO - that would only reinforce BC's alleged dislike of the man; and I would not put it past Callahan to go off publicly if TO did ask him to resign since TO keeps saying "after the season". My gut is an Athletic Dept. person that works for TO so they can play bad cop to TO's good cop. Or perhaps an university leader that does not work in the Athletic Dept.

while i'm sure he can be entertaining, I try to take the ex-players who are joining in on the piling on with a grain of salt -- if it is so easy, why aren't more of them in coaching college football instead of broadcasting? He did some high-school coaching, but I guess it's easier to move on to media and use that platform to turn up the heat, build some website traffic and garner some ratings instead of answering questions from fans and media after a tough loss. yes.. possibly the case... but please point out these tough losses? ive seen Texas.. thats about it.... everything else has just been absolutely pathetic from the get go... not too tough of a loss when you get beat by more than 2 scores... My bad -- hypothetical tough losses in imaginary seasons? It's just a lot easier to be talking head spinmeister that can rarely be wrong than a coach who is judged and harshly so based on W's. Radio guy = weatherman: accuracy not a variable for career aspirations.

Anybody but Pavelka -- that guy blew; he took home team bias off the chart. It's fine if the "husker guy" wants the huskers to win, it's expected, but not to the degree that Pavelka reached.

There are people who think 9/11 was the work of our own government. When we explain to them how they are wrong, is that bad too? If, after those explanations are given to them, they still refuse to believe that terrorists were responsible, how would you have people react to them? It is the fault of the person who will not see reason, not those trying to speak reason to them. Callahan has helmed the ship during the worst four years of Husker Football since 1962. He has steadfastly refused to make halftime adjustments. He has failed to properly assess what’s happening during games, costing us points and wins. He refused to adapt his offensive philosophy to the abilities of the players he inherited in 2004, unnecessarily costing us both our winning season streak and our bowl game streak. He (along with Steve Pederson) has alienated the core of Huskers Past, the very men who made this program what they are, removing a vital resource from this team. He has hired an incompetent coaching staff and refuses to correct those mistakes, with disastrous results this season. His coaching philosophy has resulted in a team without heart, a team that has given up, a team that has no ability to battle back from adversity. These points are irrefutable. Leveling these wholly accurate accusations at Callahan are not “attacks,” they are facts. The ONLY reason a person would be attacked in a conversation involving Bill Callahan is if they refuse to see what is so obvious to the majority. Frustration with that level of blindness will lead to harsh words, especially in the anonymity of an Internet forum. Here are some facts you left out -- worthy of consideration, but unlikely to change the minds of many: 4 of the 6 losses are to teams currently ranked in the Top 15, two of those teams are in the top 7 and USC was ranked #1 when NU played them. By year end, NU might have played one of the 5 toughest schedules in the nation. 3 of the losses have been on the road; and the A & M game was 16-14 at the half, at home, and NU 3 turnovers to A & M's zero. While coaches influence taking care of the ball, players execute it. BC's offense has shown an ability to score points and his version of the WCO can help attract recruits looking to play in a system that throws the ball if they have NFL aspirations. In other words, NU might be better off giving BC and Watson the time to make furhter offensive improvements wiht an overhaul on the defensive coaching staff and scheme. I agree with some other posters that there is something to admire in a guy that refuses to quit, resign or give up when an entire state is saying FU and the horse your rode in on.

NU -- preseason AP / UPI was ikn the 20/ 19 range -- you have to hit "view complete poll" to find ND. Even if ND did get to a BCS bowl game last year, if a team returns zippo they should have much lower expecations. You could easily add Louisville to this list -- preseason nearly Top 10 and today they sit at 5-4 with a loss to UConn and Utah, and a win over mighty Murray State -- ugg.

For him to caoch the guys in 2002 after Solich got fired (which pissed a lot of players off) has to say something about him. Well -- all it really says is that he was more loyal to the players and program than he was to Solich - which is not inherently bad. What it probably says for sure is he guessed he would have had a better chance at the head coaching position by staying on to coach the game: had he bailed out when Solich got fired it's a lock he would have gotten zero consideration from Pud. Admittedly I'm less passionate about this upcoming choice than others on this board, but I lean with others who suggest BP is not the best choice. I think TO will go with somene hat has a good track record / has proven himself in the role of head coach, not coordinator. I also think that at least one or two of the current staff will stay on -- TO is big on continuity for the sake of the players and incoming recruits. My guess here is Watson.

The levity is a good point -- it hit me tonight that with all of the BC bashing an run him out of town mentality, that NU might end up playing one of the toughest schdules in the nation this year -- 4 of the 6 losses are to teams ranked today in the top 15. SC, MU, KU and Texas. Ironic that of all teams close to this boat, CU -- MU, KU, OU and Arizona State. At least both will be battle tested by Thanskgiving weekend.

I think Okie State is going to burst KU's bubble this weekend in Stillwater -- just a hunch. On to the other question, I'll root for Mizzou to beat KU and take the North -- I think they have the best chance to beat a South team and win the Big 12.

How would the radio guys even know this? Arguments about running up the score are worthless now -- it takes more than a revenge factor to win future games.

There is at least one more win out there -- two is a stretch. Nobody is saying much about this: NU can play free and easy and take chances all day long and it won't matter much, similar to this week against Texas. KU is undefeated, KSU has an outside crack at the North -- both could play a lot more conservative and tense than NU -- it is better to be the hunter than the hunted. CU is beatable -- pressure the QB, take away the short and medium passing game cuz CU does not stretch the field. I say one win is a lock; just not sure which one.

Here's the risk I see in a lot of posts and theories about the current state of NU. Most posters / fans are convinced that the players have talent -- where is the proof in this? Strong recruiting class rankings? Rivals 100 and their kind are not measured objectively for any sort of accuracy -- they are in the (big) business of selling and providing information that is subjective at best. Has anyone ever seen an objective analysis of the top 25 recruiting classes and correlations to wins, BCS bowls and NCs? I have not. Is "the players have talent" true because the radio play by play guys says so? My point is that while the coaching staff can take blame, it might also be true that the current roster of players is not as good as some would believe. And the risk comes in turning over an entire coaching staff only to see marginal results again. Say Pellini does come to town, brings his own staff and then NU proceeds to go 7-5 or so and finishes 2nd in the North next year, then what? This is entirely possible (i.e how many thought NU would be 4-4 right now) and could lead folks to re-think their belief in the current talent level at NU. That said, it is much easier to run coaches out of town and boo them than direct frustration toward 19 to 22 year old kids who are just playing a game. All I'm saying; is their compelling evidence that these players are really all that good?

I read the article today -- essentially Shatel asks BC to do everyone a favor and resign. While I do think BC is done at NU, I doubt he will resign -- I could be mistaken, but I don't think technically a resignation automatically results in a contract buyout. I believe a coach or anyone in a contractual position has to be fired from a legal perspective to trigger a buyout clause in a contract. So they'll dance in a few weeks, or days, TO will fire BC but BC can say he "resigned" and NU will buy him out. From a PR perspective the university will probably want it to look like "the best for everyone."

TO said all the right things and will do the right things -- but during his press conference he did not do Callahan any favors by suggesting he would attend practice and help if asked to do so -- this puts BC in the ultimate no win situation; and I was surprised that TO offered it up. I know why he did it, but man no matter how much you might hate on BC that's a tough spot to be in.

The camera's que'ed in on Keller after that play and you could see he was seriously pissed off Jose...and rightfully so. He's trying to do his part with little to no help from the O-line and the D. Didn't Keller throw his helmet into the bench area as he was coming off the field? I thought I seen him throw something I noticed that too. The coaches need to get the same fire that Keller is showing!!!! Here's the weird part of all this to me -- Tom Osborne always seemed pretty stoic to me too -- he'd get fired up once in awhile, but TO was as really good at coach speak and staying emotionally on an even keel -- maybe in his day there were some assitants that would get the team fired up? I don't remember TO's staff well, but NU sure won a lot of games and TO did not have to break out fire and brimstone very often. I just don't think the defense believes in Cosgrove or his system, and with doubt they lack passion.

Keller is not the problem -- he is not getting any help; and last night there were several drops. As others have pointed out, at least he cares and shows some emotion. If OSU wins this weekend and hangs big yardage on the defense, Callahan could lose this team emotionally and this could get really ugly -- like it or not, this week is huge. A win and NU can maybe bubble gum and band aid there way to 8 or 9 wins -- a loss and it could be a 6 win year.

It also could be that everyone else has just caought up -- NU dominated with power in the 90's in part because of a strength and conditioning edge -- others caught on, and caught up.

This is the one "record" that will never fall -- I use it the quotations on purpose -- when boosters or the athletic department step in to snatch up the last 300 tickets to Nichols State or Ball State or any other team, the "sellout streak" is more mythical than the old national championships won in the polls.
