  1. I learned that this team looks and feels more like old Nebraska. And that I have missed this more than I thought.
  2. you young pups need to check our some Eric videos. That guy was the entire offense and got hit on almost every play (as an option QB). As far as I know the guy never went out of bounds and was tough as nails. To have him behind TM makes me think Nebraska fans need a refresher. Now get off my lawn.
  3. This. This. This. This. He is still trying to make a football play. Probably because there is a good chance we could fumble the ball. The block is also a football play trying to stop him from recovering the possible fumble. Come on refs. Holy balls
  4. yep--my boy loves the "trains" (Purdue). At least they are not very threatening. When we play football on our own (more like wrestling with a football) we rotate through names. about half the time he says he wants to be the Huskers but at least 10% of the time he picks the Tigers. I don't ask which ones, because...well there is just some information a dad can't handle.
  5. It is pretty safe to say that the staff knew what the guys where going to pick. "Guys--should we stick with the 3 man front that is getting destroyed or switch to our basic defense?" The rather interesting part was that they chose to get their imput rather than just tell them to do it. Pretty smart way of getting the team to take some ownership. It seemed to work well. kudos to the staff for this one.
  6. I think it is important to remember that if that ball is dropped we are calling for a new coach. a coin flip chance and we need a new coach. I'm not sure exactly what that means--but it seems like such a small bit of chance can influence our decisions.
  7. so, here is the deal. If the next few years involve us playing option football with TA-I really hope we DON'T have to change coaches. I would enjoy watching this offense for the next few years. Just stay with it! At least it is an identity!
  8. It isn't all bad news. Some good stuff going on there on the O side.
  9. Not saying it is over--but if it continues like this I would predict that could be as early as next week
  10. I think this is a good week to remember that every week half of the teams that play lose. Look at Oklahoma/Texas Penn St./Mich. Missouri/Georgia, Stanford/Utah. Most of us watch these games and cheer on the underdog and think "that was a fun game". To those fan bases they want to fire their coaches and reinvent their "schemes". Some of those teams that won wanted to (still want to) fire their coaches. The bottom line is that good teams are going to lose. The good Ol' days of Nebraska football might be gone, but it isn't just because Nebraska isn't as good as vintage Nebraska. It is in part because any team can beat any team. Sure we might be 75% favorites '(win 75/100 matchups) with a team. But if you put 4-6 of those kind of teams on your schedule you are going to lose 1 or 2 of them. I can't think of any more cliche to put in this post so I will end here. Bottom line--we may be a ways away from Bama--but maybe not so far away from that next tier of teams. Maybe that isn't such a bad place to be. Have a great week Husker Fans!
  11. I had it on a tape in the early 90's. I had a whole tape of Husker songs including some by the band. It was a tape someone made for me, so it wasn't official. I have also looked for that song--but can't find it.
  12. Good grief, it is like you all got dumped by the prom queen. Wallowing self-doubt pitty party going on here. Bro-code demands that you go out, get drunk, and find some other chick. Maybe that happens on jan 1, or maybe it waits for next year. Either way, stop acting like a bunch of Mizzou fans.
  13. let me state the obvious, because it is fun... when it comes down to it, with a couple better 4th quarter plays against ucla we are in the national championship conversation. I'm not saying we should be in that conversation now, or that we haven't had our share of breaks (we have). Still, it is fun to think we are a play or two away from being in that conversation. Of course we are only half a dozen plays away from being near .500 team that wants to fire its coach.
  14. Remember when 1st and goal from the five meant you could go grab another beer because it was as good as putting 7 on the board.
  15. Tom Osborne did this ALL the time. 4th quarter, up by a ton, still running up the middle or triple option with the 3rd string. The defenses were usually so beaten down that they would break off huge runs right up the middle. Tom would often go for it on 4th down in these situations and would later say he didn't want to run up the score by kicking a field goal. I remember saying that it wasn't running up the score because everyone in the stadium knew what play was being called. All they had to do was stop it. I'm sure if you ask Iowa state, Kansas state, Kansas, etc. they would have called that running up the score. At any rate, last I saw the game was football and the huskers got their ass handed to themselves with or without that score.
  16. As a 35 year old man who has lived in 3 cities and has always purchased the paper in those cities, I still get a little excited when shatel posts an article online. He is better than anyone I have seen in any of the places I have lived (Kansas city, st. Louis). Good at sports, better at telling a story.
  17. It isn't that odd. This isn't a knock on Martinez, but he isn't even the best running quarterback in his division of his conference. I don't get all the hate for Martinez, but I don't get pretending he is better than what he has shown he is so far. He is fast. He used to be and may return to be very fast, but he has not shown he is a great "runner". We can all hope that this is the year.
  18. People who have the power to make these kinds of decisions do not typically ask the opinion of people lower on the chain of command for their input. Maybe they should, maybe they shouldn't...they just usually don't.
  19. If I was a player, I couldn't help but feel a little ripped off when I know the schools are making huge dollars off my work. I think that would be natural. I also think the "but your college is being paid for" thing wouldn't hold a lot of water to me as a college kid. It would probably even feel like a bit of a slap in the face. But as a 33 year old man, who is still paying off student loans (and I am not complaining about that--it just is what it is) the value of what they are getting is a little more apparent to me than what it would have been as a 21 year old. The key would probably be, that you have to be getting something out of your college education for that to really be a value. If you are just taking blow off classes to stay eligible then your college education is really a waste of your time and energy and then you would really feel like you should be getting paid. If you are progressing in a degree that you are passionate about, then it probably feels like more of a value. I obviously don't know Kenny, and am not pretending to know anything about his college. I do appreciate him advocating for what he believes in, and think he did it in a reasonable way.
  20. mother f'ing yes---this team may have some problems, but that was a tough win. good for them and shame on all of us doubters. Nice work boys.
  21. I hate to say this--but I agree. Been a husker fan from the womb... but come on Huskerfan, stop being such crybabies!
  22. a lot of huskers feeling down today. How about a quick shout-out to Burkhead. The guy is a stud and basically took this team on his shoulders for the last 4 games. The guy is young and may end up being in the conversation with some of the best. His guts and tough play make me feel good about the future. The thought of a healthy Martinez and Rex 1-2 years older makes me think that this tough/fast tandem will be a huge problem for the Big10(+2).
  23. how many times do you see another program fire coaches or coordinators only to find out that the person they replace them with is about the same or a little worse. You don't change just to change--you need to have someone who can do the job better. (and remember--there is a lot more to the job then calling plays. recruiting players for one). By most accounts Watson is a perfectly average coordinator. (rivals had him ranked as high as 8th in the nation, for what it is worth). A average OC who can recruit and is a good human being is probably good enough for Bo to be in the mix every year. and before everyone jumps on this post. I am not saying average is good enough. I am just saying it may be the best we can get for right now. I doubt chip kelly is looking to move to OC at Nebraska and I love Scott Frost as much as the next guy, but anyone who would rank him as a better OC then Watson is a major Nebraska homer. to bring the point home--careful we don't fire another Solich for the sake of getting another Callahan.
  24. most the time we never see freshmen mistakes because they are not on the field. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and realize that martinez is learning while on the field what most QB's learn in 2-3 years of practice.
