  1. Uh oh. I guess Nebraska's offense better watch out on the 18th of October!
  2. I don't like that word "essential" in there. I don't think a few option plays are essential, but I do think they would help. In my opinion, running straight up the middle for 5-10 yards per carry would keep the opposing team's DBs just as honest while taking away some of the inherent risk the option has (i.e., freakin fumbles!!!). However, I am definitely not against the option. Just wanted to make the point that running the ball would be just as effective, especially since we are "supposed" to have an awesome offensive line.
  3. Exactly! But seriously, while this article makes me believe in the defense a little more, it's just not enough. Playing against our own guys does not prove how good or bad we are. Remember one year ago our offense looked nearly flawless during spring practice? Now we know why. Our first measuring stick will be Western Michigan, and then we can go from there.
  4. People's pants would be flying on the field!
  5. No one is forcing you to read it. If it makes you happy, I'm not. I'm just tired of it getting bumped to the top of the forum. 15 paragraph posts just don't do it for me. So, you aren't reading it, but you're responding to what I am writing? That's quite an interesting situation you have going on there!
  6. Anybody remember when everyone knew what we were going to run, and we still made big yards anyway? The defenses adjusted, they had people where they should be, but we just blew over or around them. Those were the days... Yeah, but times change, and defenses get quicker. T.O. also knew what type of player needed to be at each position to make the offense successful. He has been out of coaching for so long, I forgot what a great coach/play caller he was...especially in the mid 90s.
  7. No one is forcing you to read it. If you think these things have been said many times before, then don't read the thread. Simple as that. I, however, am enjoying our discussion about last season. We are discussing Nebraska football in......a Nebraska football discussion board. I don't see anything wrong with it.
  8. You missed the post where a guy said that ISU signed a deal with ESPN..... I do not know what you are talking about Dave. That's what I have in my prediction...
  9. Yeah, I liked the option, but hopefully it isn't too integrated into the new offensive system. I think it would be a good addition to the offense, especially: Zone Read and QB Slot Option Read. I would also like to see the "regular" option (QB + HB) but disguised so it can come out of many different formations. These ideas would keep the defense on its toes, especially if mixed in with some different running plays and passing plays. Make that defense think! Whenever playing a sport, at least in my experience, the more you think, the more you over analyze. The more you over analyze, the more likely you are to make a mistake. Of course, this doesn't apply to everyone. Yep. Looks like Glenn might be taking some huge leaps towards the LB position. We shall see though.
  10. Nope. How are those things incompatible? He took ALL the credit when things went well, but then pointed the finger when things didn't go so well (i.e., most of the time last season). I was just highlighting this point. When Ganz had that killer game, it was the system that worked, not the players. I guess I did see an "O" out there hike the ball to another "O" who chucked it down field to another "O". Man, that system sure knows how to play football... Okay. Well, if the players actually refused to do what they were told (which has not been proven), it tells me: that there must not be too much leadership at the top, players don't buy into the system, or both. Either way, if I'm the head coach and looking at these "slackers," I would bench them. What would have been the difference? If they weren't doing their job, what difference would it have made if we put in a second stringer? Looking back at the results, I would say: no difference. Sure, coaches can really only put you in a position to make plays (which didn't happen much last season either), but if players aren't playing up to expectations, then bench them. It's as simple as that. Yeah, pretty sure the same thing would happen to me. I would get benched for poor production. Also known as getting canned, fired, and laid off. Yep. I just listen to whatever the media tells me and take it at face value. You sure do know me. Yeah, and not once did I go out of my way to say how I loved the style of practice. To me, it was stupid. You don't recruit a bunch of 4 or 5 star athletes and bring them into play college football like it's the NFL. Yeah, it is a common theme. But I tend not to follow themes. When I see it, I will believe it. I feel we have the potential to have a great team this season, and it seems the spring practices are going well. That's really all I can say right now. I do have high hopes though, but it's from watching videos of their practices, not from what someone from a NEBRASKA newspaper is saying about a NEBRASKA team. Please show me where I said I loved the Cally practices? Actually, other than my previous post, show me where I said anything positive about Cally. I'll be waiting in my corner of hypocrisy.
  11. Okay, I don't know what network will pick up the games, so I will just say whether it will be on TV (basic channels) or PPV. Western Michigan: PPV San Jose State: TV New Mexico State: None Virginia Tech: TV (probably a main station...i.e., ABC) Missouri: TV Texas Tech: TV Iowa State: ESPN since it is obvious ISU has a signed deal with them Baylor: None Oklahoma: TV (probably a main station) Kansas: TV Kansas State: PPV Colorado: TV Those are my guesses. Yeah, I don't really know what the point was, but there you go. The games I really want to see this season are: Western Michigan (only 'cause it's the first game), VT (first "real" game...using the word "real" loosely), Mizzou, TT, and Kansas. Looking at the schedule makes me cringe. Looks tough to me. San Jose should be pretty good, New Mexico is okay, but the real threats are VT, Mizzou, TT, Oklahoma, Kansas (we will see), and maybe even Colorado. Screw it, the Big 12 is going to be tough this year. And hey, even if the games aren't on TV or you don't want to order the PPV (yeah right, I'm ordering any PPV there is!!!!), you can always catch the Bo Pelini show on Sunday.
  12. I like your answer better than MUTigerFan's response...
  13. I've got a whole cabinet filled with cans of Whup Ass...don't make me have to open a can of it on you Haha! Include me on the team, because I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum......and I'm all out of bubble gum.
  14. However, it pisses me off to see somebody say that it wasn't soley Cally's fault. Last time I checked, he was head coach. Head coach is responsible for the team's performance Not Callahan's fault that Nunn fumbled against Texas, that Smith fumbled his INT agaist TT, that Zac threw those 4 picks in the Big XII championship game, etc. Blaming everything on one person is incredibly silly. No, it wasn't his fault. Remember, his system worked and he did very good in all areas of the game. I mean...that D last season was stellar. I really loved the system they employed: trying to get the opposing team's offense tired by making them run up and down the field. Brilliant!!! Unfortunately, by the time the opposing team's offense was tired, it was too late to make our comeback...
  15. The times of the home games haven't even been announced. And unless NU really starts strong, it's unlikely that they will be on national TV at all. The top teams are the ones that get the TV exposure. Well yeah, but there are also numerous people that are interested what the new NU will look like. I know VT vs. NU will be on TV, but I'm hoping one (if not all) of the early games are on TV, or at the very least, on PPV. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease, I'm dying here!!!
  16. ...what NU games will be on TV (i.e., with the games with the Broncs be on TV)? I know it's really early, but I'm anxious to see the new NU in action.
  17. So how do we go from top 60 defense to bottom of the barrel with the same coaches in place? Answer: The defensive line and others that had been taught the fundamentals by Solich and Company. As soon as these individuals left, it went downhill real fast because there was new talent that had not been coached, and according to recent interviews, there was not a whole lot of coaching during Cally's era, period. I didn't really want to respond to this thread at all, because what's done is done. I don't have a problem with Coz or Cally. However, it pisses me off to see somebody say that it wasn't soley Cally's fault. Last time I checked, he was head coach. Head coach is responsible for the team's performance, including: how much effort each of the players put forth every game, practice, in the classroom, etc. If these players were not putting forth effort, they should have been benched. This did not happen. Let's take a look at some of the flaws I noticed with the Cally/Coz regime: 1) Practice attitude - Repetition, repetition. That was the key to the practices. Stupid. That's what I say. Especially since half the time they were practicing the wrong thing, and since the coaching staff didn't correct mistakes until AFTER they were off the field, these players could have been practicing the wrong thing for many, many reps. Brilliant. Both coaches had a laid back attitude about practice. Most of the time, the players take on the attitude of the coaches, and well, there was alot of attitude missing from these coaches. Granted when T.O. coached, he wasn't running around on the sideline, but ask any player who played for him and you would get the same response, "I would run through a wall for Coach" Would you get the same response for Coz or Cally's players? Maybe...maybe not. The point is the coaching staff was seriously lacking in the "win" attitude. When you say, "Hey, you know, a win is a win........Husker fans," or, "Well, this loss is only one game...Husker fans," it shows lack of passion for winning. Almost like winning is not important. Sure winning isn't everything, but when the coaches are being paid to win, it has to be important. 2) Not coaching - This is self-explanatory, and kind of ties in with 1. From many articles circulating recently (and from the performance on the field), you can see that the fundamentals were not being taught, and many were confused about what they were supposed to be doing. 3) Not making adjustments - This, to me, was one of the most annoying things. When it was obvious something wasn't working, they kept sticking with it anyway. If I was in that position and kept doing what I was told to do and it wasn't working, after a while I would kind of play half ass. 3-3-5 was not working against Mizzou, but NU stuck with it by-golly because, "that's what was practiced during the week." God. Those are just a few. But to keep with the subject of this post: 1) Recruiting - he did recruit alot of talent, and I have a feeling this season, we will see what that talent can do with a little bit of talent development. I hate it when people say NU doesn't have any talent on their team. I would strongly disagree. Almost the entire O line was recruited by Cally (I believe), and they are being labeled by Bo as, and I quote, "One of the best offensive lines I have ever been around." Don't forget about Ganz or Lucky. Both are returning this season, and I am confident they will have a super season, barring any injuries (please no!). On the defensive side, we should have a great D line. Potter and Turner both look great after losing a little weight and bulking up the amount of muscle (FYI: muscle does NOT weigh more than fat...it is however, more dense). Don't forget about Suh and Steinkuhler. My point is that there is talent currently at NU. The only problem is trying to convert that talent by teaching them the correct way to do things within the new system (both offense and defense). Offense obviously has the edge, but with Bo helping alot on the defensive side of the ball, I think the D shouldn't be too far behind. 2) Winning Big 12 North - Hey, he did win the Big 12 North and even though they lost, did make it to the Big 12 Championship. 3) New offense - In my opinion, this was one of my favorite things Cally did right. While he wasn't a good head coach, he was and still is a great offensive coordinator/play caller. Watson said he thought he knew it all, but when he talked to Cally about play calling/offensive schemes, it was like he (Watson) learned 10 years of information in 10 minutes. His system worked pretty good (keep in mind, the players made it work though...it was not just the system). The power running game mixed with option we had during the 90s was fine, but once Solich took over it showed some pretty big flaws. Namely, it was very difficult to come back from a medium to large defecit without a solid passing game. The WCO, in my opinion, is a great offense because it seeks to take control of the clock. If our offense is on the field a majority of the time, the other team's offense cannot be out on the field. I like this style of play. It also has the ability to come from behind if needed by passing the ball down field for huge chunks of yardage. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out the way it was planned most of the time. To summarize: yes, Cally did have some huge flaws. But in my opinion, he did some good things before his departure. Let's just look ahead and get pumped for the new season to begin. It's getting closer and closer...
  18. Not sure if this is even relevant, but just for fun I wanted to see how the 2007 NU team fared against this rating system: Nevada - W (by 42) = 42 Wake Forest - W (by 1) = 1 USC - L (Top 10 team) = -10 Ball State - W (by 1) = 1 Iowa State - W (by 18) = 18 Mizzou - L (Top 10 team) = -10 OSU - L (Unranked) = -60 A&M - L (Unranked) = -60 Texas - L (Top 11-25 team) = -30 Kansas - L (Top 10 team) = -10 KSU - W (by 42) = 42 Colorado - L (Unranked) = -60 Total = -136 Rating = -11.33 I probably could have made a mistake somewhere along the way, but the rating definitely syncs up to what I thought of the 2007 team and coaching staff. Here's to a positive rating in 2008!!!
  19. Great article! Reading all the Spring Practice notes/articles is getting me psyched for the new season to start. I am anxious to see the revamped Nebraska team under Pelini's leadership (leadership was a huge characteristic missing from last season's team). Physicality is obviously very important. Something I am looking forward to will be the amount of turnovers this defense can rack up (I think this is directly correlated with how physical a team plays). In my opinion, creating turnovers should always be a top priority for any defense. Not only creating turnovers, but if a team can create turnovers early, the team definitely will start to build momentum while deflating the other team. What would have happened if NU created some turnovers early in some of the blowouts? Who knows? However, if NU can keep the momentum in their favor by playing physical football and create some turnovers early in the game, I think even some of the better teams on our schedule may be in trouble.
  20. Hmmm... I say let him try it a few practices to see what happens. I have my doubts that 3 weeks of spring practice and the fall is going to be enough time for him to be able to play a LB in Division 1 football in the Big 12. But like I hinted at: you never know.
  21. This definitely doesn't have anything to do with moving people in a football stadium. I appreciate what you did, but please stick with the subject. Okay, that's great. I never questioned if you were a fan or not, and this doesn't have to do with the gentleman being moved either. Your comparison doesn't make much sense because in your example, my parents HAVE to move to a different house; this gentleman is not being kicked out of Memorial Stadium, he is just being asked to move to a different location. Also, you seem to be pinning this decision on "my" generation. Last time I checked, T.O. (the person actually making the decision) was not in his 20s, and therefore, not part of "my" generation. Again, I don't think the University is dismissing his fanhood or anything else by asking him to move. Being a huge fan of the program and most likely wanting what's best for the program, I would think he would be okay with this. I guess not. But he just mentions how much he has given to the program and feels that for this reason where he sits is more important than the big picture (the program's success). So alienating the student fans the University does have is the way to go? I don't get it, please explain to me how that makes sense. Since, in your opinion, many of them are not life long fans, why not get rid of the student section completely and let some of the "real" fans who donate money and purchase regular priced tickets move into their seats? Based on what you have said, your definition of a fan is one who gives alot of money to the program and then expects something in return. I disagree.
  22. I am definitely excited to see just what this season's team will be bringing to the table. However, I am still worried about what kind of shape our defense will be in (the "x factor" in my opinion). Any chance we can get Carriker to come back and disguise him as Potter? Just curious...
  23. Apparently, you're not familiar with Social Security. Ha! So that's where my damn money is going!!! It's a shame it won't be around to support me when I am old.
