  1. For posterity, it should be noted that these were the "passing years". I, for one, am glad they are about past. If you have, at minimum, a great passing quarterback, they could be good years. But.... These years should not be forgotten or ignored lest once again the coaches start to think NU needs to be a passing team. Back to time when the opponent knows we are going to run and they know there is not a thing they can do to shut the run down.
  2. I was not there but can understand this can happen. Lots of frustration to vent. Criticism can be tough to take especially if you know you suck and then the whole world sucks. It is too bad energy can not be focused in a more positive way. I would guess most college football players could hold their own in a bar fight with other college students, but clearly the Husker players are getting whipped on the field. Too bad some of these guys don't take a leadership role on the team.
  3. Not to dis the players, but this thought crossed my mind seconds before I saw this thread. They held it together in the first half and I thought maybe they had a winning attitude, but I am puzzled at the second half. Are they running out of gas? From comments I have read, I wonder how their conditioning is.
  4. In the wins the rest of the season poll, I voted 2 games won. With the change, I expect we will blow away ATM today. I would vote for 5 wins if I answered the poll today.
  5. I have been down on sp and bc for a couple of years, just have been more vocal on a board lately. I expect a lot of emotion from everyone tomorrow and believe many people (national media, other college fans, recruits) will be watching player and fan reactions tomorrow. I was pleased to see many comments on keeping things positive (maybe the Husker spirit will even enter bc tomorrow) and believe positive is the only way to act and react tomorrow. Husker fans have had the "reputation" and "tradition" of being "classy." I hope that thought is only reinforced with cheers for all associated with the program tomorrow.
  6. Many businesses are this way. One company I am quite familiar with is this way. Of course, this company has a 30%+ turnover rate annually which, I believe, is the highest for that industry. Big corporate outfits are this way and most probably have to be this way. BTW, I can understand how this could create problems in the athletic department and explain some of the turnover in those not at the very top of the foodchain.
  7. Not sure if NU had the reputation of a powerhouse football program before Devaney. Issues around Devaney which could have threatened his job are probably not documented in any history book. Not as clean-cut as TO, but who is? One thing I remember hearing was the Bobfather was very good at beating the point spread (for the gamblers) whereas TO was not as good, or did not want to be as good, as Devaney in this respect. Fact or fiction? One of the Devaney-Osborne legends I remember.
  8. Then and now? Seems like a lot of comparisons focus on the last 10 years or back to the first of the last 3 NCs. I can't believe that a Husker nation whose team has 0 losses or 3 losses looks ahead at the last 5 games of the regular season and says if we go 3-2 in the last 5 games we will be doing good. Although in the poll, I predicted 2 wins the rest of the season considering the state of the program, starting with changing some leadership, hopefully an attitude will begin to change. I now expect 5 wins to finish and a win in the bowl game, gentlepeople. It is the Husker way! May I leave you with a poem you probably have read, and, like myself, have forgotten. The Man Who Thinks He Can If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don't. If you like to win, but you think you can’t. It is almost certain you won't. If you think you'll lose, you've lost, For out in the world we find success begins with a fellow's will. It's all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are. You've got to think high to rise. You've got to be sure of yourself before you can even win a prize. Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man But soon or late the man who wins is the man who thinks he can Walter D. Wintle
  9. While I have no illusions that TO will become the permanent HC, it would not surprise me if he, indeed, leads the team onto the field one more time. The man is older and certainly has higher priorities (family) than the Husker program. TO never showed his emotions, as I recall, in trying times in the past. Most or all of our posters remember the 1990's NC years, but there were some lean times, as NU football goes, earlier in TO's HCing career. The late 70's were tougher times and some near-miss NC in the 1980's had to be quite disappointing. TO probably had pressure and doubters in trying to measure up to the Bobfather. TO, and maybe Nancy, are the only ones who know what TO is thinking right now. If TO played poker, which I sincerely doubt, he would be one of the toughest reads out there. BC better get his ship in shape and fast. BC will make some changes, if nothing else something to get the players enthused, and there will be only two people in on these discussions. If BC is smart, he will ask for TO's input. While I have been deeply critical of BC, maybe he just needs some guidance, but I truly think BC is a lost cause.
  10. Megan, As a motorcycle enthusiast who rides a shaft-driven, liquid-cooled motorcycle from Honda, I will borrow a popular saying from the Harley Davidson enthusiasts to comment about the passion, obsession, dedication, love, and interest that people have in Husker football. "If I have to explain, you would not understand."
  11. Okay, I know I will be forever stricken from posting here or anywhere again as it will be determined I am utterly insane. I have no sources, just my own thoughts and dreams, and have not read this thought anywhere else, but here goes. TO will be named interim AD at the press conference today. Since BC is a wounded duck, and the whole world knows it, the Husker Nation will be put out of its misery as TO fires BC as his first official action. Since acquiring a new HC at this point is out of the question, TO will be the interim HC for the rest of this season and the bowl game. I do not know if NU has the talent, but if it is humanly possible, there is one person in this world, and one person only, who can turn this season around. Can you imagine the crowd reaction the first time the new interim HC leads our team onto the field at Memorial Stadium? A person can dream, can't he?
  12. Callahan will collect his money. I suppose if he resigns under pressure or is fired, he collects. If he resigns voluntarily, he might not. I might guess he could use the money for his retirement. He will not move up when he leaves this position.
  13. I joined this Sunday after the OSU game as I was wondering when the locals were finally going to get fed up enough to make some changes. I have not followed the Huskers that close the last few years being disappointed with SP's attitude, BC's plan, and overall performance. The spirit, to me, has been waning. Checked out a couple other places - one that appeared to be another popular board seemed to be cheerleaders for the present, and recently present, people in power. The measuring stick I use is playing a competitive game and getting wins, not getting blown out. The rest of the stuff - ethics, infrastructure, academics - better get done, but winning football games is also a Nebraska tradition. It appears to me that this board did a good job of informing people, allowing them to express their opinion, and quite possibly helped get the needed changes started quicker, which, IMO is way past due. I am looking forward to a return of Nebraska as they were in the past - maybe not #1 nationally (I was converted to NU in 1976 and remember many disappointments) - but a class act and a contender. Thanks for letting me participate. While I usually spend my limited forum time on a motorcycle forum, when it comes to the Huskers, this would be my first choice.
  14. Thanks for keeping this common person informed and up to date with developments better than any other source I could find. (Granted, the board went down for a bit, but it was loaded up with users big time.)
  15. Knee-jerk? No. We lost way too many games over too many years. This pimple finally came to a head. This change has been too long coming. If SP would have fired BC before this season or last season, SP would still have the job. This is no knee-jerk. Enough people finally got fed up and started howling.
