  1. It's that time of year again. Time to focus on our own. As always, be funny but be respectful. These are our guys, after all. Edit: Here's another one. Walker Ashburn and Muttley, from Hanna Barbera cartoons.
  2. That's a many, many paragraphs-long answer, and I don't want to write that any more than you probably want to read it. Further, without much research that I'm not going to perform, I don't know what current standards are on such searches. All I'm willing to say is, this goes too far. Of that I'm quite certain.
  3. The Spring Game has to be taken as nothing more than a fun time in the sun with something resembling football as the entertainment. It's not ever going to be a real game - it's just an excuse to get out and enjoy spring after a (usually) crummy winter, get a tailgate in, and alleviate some of the boredom in the off-season. As far as the "game" goes, I'd like to see the 1s-v-1s, with both units making some good plays.
  4. Regardless of whether you agree that people should be arrested for these offenses or not, they are arrested for these offenses. Once arrested, this ruling gives the police a blanket ability to BC search anyone they please. We can rely on the goodness of the police not to abuse this power, and in a perfect world we'd be OK, but this isn't that world. Power is abused, often.
  5. America is in a better position than Greece for many reasons. Not least among them is that we are the international currency standard, and will remain so as long as we have a strong trading relationship with China - read: for the foreseeable future. Our per-capita debt ratio to our GDP is better (about $47k per person, while our debt-to-GDP ratio is about 1:1) than Greece's (about $27K per person, but their debt-to-GDP ratio is about 2:3). Combine that with the fact that our unemployment numbers peaked at about 10% and have been slowly edging downward, while Greece's unemployment is around 23%, and you have very disparate pictures of the situation between the US and Greek economies. Greece will collapse without foreign aid. American needs to exercise more restraint in its spending, internally, and it'll be OK. HUGE difference there. 6. Look at the examples given in the article: You cannot convince me that the police have a need to strip-search leash-law violators, or those who have failed to pay child support. Individuals should have the right to remain unmolested by the police, even if they've broken minor laws. The reasoning behind this is fear-based reactionary nonsense. Citing the 9/11 psychos and Timothy McVeigh to explain the rationale to strip-search a person arrested for a noisy muffler? That's nonsense.
  7. It takes much more strict definition than any of those examples. If we simply give the police the power to BC search anyone, that can and will be abused.
  8. Johnny, you said you were going to find the numbers to support this allegation. Where are those stats in anything you've linked? Where are your stats, remember you saw a show that had the exact opposite numbers. You are so worried about my numbers but you haven't shown anything, what ya got, Knapplcy? I thought the point of that post was perfectly obvious. Apparently not.
  9. The probable cause standard remains the same. The opinion basically states that this applies to prisoners who will be released into the general jail population. It surprises me that this was not already settled law. Let's be clear what we're talking about here. There's the county lockup (jail) and the state pen (prison). The term "general population" most often refers to the prison population, not those incarcerated overnight for a minor offense. Nor does this law differentiate those incarcerated for a few months on minor issues. We're talking any person arrested. Anyone. For any reason. You shoplift a $10 DVD, you're going to get strip-searched. Involved in a fight, even if you didn't start it? Strip-searched. Public intoxication? Strip-searched. Even if your arrest were to be thrown out in court, you would have already been strip-searched.
  10. Would you explain? I don't see a happy answer either way in this case. This ruling gives a blanket permission for every person arrested to be strip-searched. Body-cavity searched. This isn't just talking about gen-pop prisoners in the State Pen, we're talking about anyone even suspected of a crime being strip-searched. The potential for abuse is staggering. People arrested on a bench warrant for failure-to-appear can be strip-searched. We do not need to be checking the body cavities of every single person arrested and held for even a short time. It's completely unnecessary for many, many people. We cannot simply say we have probable cause to suspect that anyone being arrested may have concealed contraband in a BC. It's not realistic, and the police should not have that power. Sure, we can say that, in an abundance of caution, we want to make sure that nobody is carrying anything at all illegal into the county lockup. But the number of civil rights violations that are going to come from this do not justify that abundance of caution. For goodness' sake - our homes are now more sacrosanct than our bodies. That's bizarre.
  11. I see the argument for it. I vehemently disagree with that argument, but I can see it.
  12. Sure... but we can all agree that if the score at the end of the game is not in our favor, then obviously it's because of the uniforms, right? Oh yes. Absolutely. And Herc, you are evil for posting the all-red game. Sooner Magic. Yuck.
  13. Thank you! You're fun. Stay that way. Thanks. You stay golden too, ponyboy.
  14. This Supreme Court is out of its mind. First we get Citizen's United, which was one of the worst decision by the SCOTUS in decades. Now we have this: The Supremes have lost their minds. You cannot allow strips for EVERY SINGLE PERSON ARRESTED. This is granting the police way too much power. I am concerned this Court is going to create a huge mess before they're through - a mess the likes of which we haven't seen for years, which will take a generation to clean up.
  15. Congratulations, Maud. He's going to be a lot of fun - in a year. Just be ready for being irrelevant for awhile. The sun rises and sets on Mommy for the first year or so, and you're just kind of there for some random entertainment. After that your importance grows. Don't take it personal if he's Mommy's little guy for a while. On another note - I'm the only one to +1 the newest Husker? What's wrong with you guys? (I'm talking to you, HuskerBoarders)
  16. I think, in general, I'm in favor of keeping the uniforms unchanged. But if they change them for a game, that's not going to kill me. Concern about score at end of game >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> uniform they wear.
  17. You can only cry "wolf!" so many times before it loses effectiveness.
  18. If I'm not mistaken, NCLB was my point in this conversation. It's, perhaps, a valid point to say that some schools were failing before NCLB. I have yet to see how you're pinning that failure on the Democrats rather than both parties, though.
  19. Here we go. Obligatory shot of the main east entrance. They've put up a number of new beams (as tschu jokingly pointed out above) since last week. The crane looking straight up from the columns. I'm a budding artist. The view from Ed Weir Track. This shot got me thinking about the distance between the new facade and the original stadium, and how much of the old stadium will be visible when this project is complete. That wondering led to this shot, where you can see they're putting the north end so close to the original stadium that they've actually cut into the border of the inscription to put the beams up. Apparently the inscription on this side will be flush with the new facade. Now I'm wondering if they're going to be terribly clever and have a room inside this facade where you can walk up to this inscription - which would be tremendously cool. I'd hate to think this will be essentially wallpapered over. From the track I swung around to the south side to get a few shots of the inscription there, to see how closely they were putting the facade to this side. I was surprised to see that the stand-off space was much, much further away on this side. This is about how far off the west stadium facade is from the original west stadium. Now I'm wondering why the big difference in stand-off space, or if it's just a matter of the south side not being complete, and they'll swing in closer to the inscription here as they move south with the structure. I walked over to the most famous of Memorial Stadium inscriptions to get a shot of how they retained our ability to see the inscriptions on the west side. I then went atop the parking garage just west of the stadium and took some shots of the Arena from that perspective. There really aren't any good spots to get a good perspective of the growth of the arena, since none of the buildings surrounding it are public. This is an OK shot. Note the progress on the upper deck, which sprung up in just the last few weeks. My weekly pic from the Haymarket foot bridge: And my other weekly pic from the parking lot just south of the Post Office:
  20. Did my weekly walk-around this AM. This is really becoming a second spectator sport here in Lincoln, and it's neat to see all the out-of-town license plates drive by taking pictures. It's also a lot of fun to walk up to a random Husker fan taking pictures and talk Husker sports. Shoutout to Phillip, whom I met today in the East Loop parking lot, and to Luka from arenatree.wordpress, who lives in the Haymarket and has been taking near-daily pictures of the arena as it goes up. I'll put my pictures up in a little bit....
