  1. I commented about this on the LJS. I can't believe they ran a story about this douchebag. I talked to at least a dozen Texas fans Saturday, and every single one of them said they'd been treated very well by Husker fans. What the hell is the point of running an article about the one or two percent of dumbasses out there who do dumbass things? It's not representative of our fans. Sometimes the JournalStar baffles me. This is one of those times.
  2. May I introduce you to a friend of mine? He's called "the period." This is what's so frustrating about Niles - you're wrong that he's not a playmaker. He most certainly is. He can put the ball in the end zone every single play - or he can fumble it for a defensive touchdown. It's about a coin flip which we'll get on any given play, which is why you have to keep the guy out there. I love Niles Paul to death. But sometimes... I think he's going to be the death of me.
  3. I also refuse to believe that the grief we give players here is even 10% of the amount of grief Bo gives them. If they can handle Bo in the meeting rooms, at halftime and in practice after a game like this, they ought to be able to handle some hand-wringing by guys on a message board.
  4. It was abused. Besides, there's no reason to -1 the guy when you can make mincemeat of his post with a solidly-worded retort. Exercise your writing skills and show him the error of his ways - and do it nicely. That's the art of the message board, which you/we do pretty well around here.
  5. disagree.. so your saying cuz you a buy a husker shirt.. you have the right to talk about the players personal life? i guess we have different morals, but thats fine.. i can't sway you and change you.. definitely and interesting outlook Actually, I do want to respond to this directly. In no way have I advocated talking about a players personal life, at least the part of it that does not directly involve the team. Fair game for a player is anything that directly involves his play on the field, or his representation of the jersey he wears. If a player gets a DUI, that is most definitely fair game – they represent the team in everything they do. Their behavior at 2am on the streets of Lincoln makes national news when lines are crossed, and it is entirely unrealistic to expect that they won't take flak for that here or at the coffee shop or at the water cooler. What is not fair game is his familial relationships, his personal relationships, his religious beliefs (if he intends them to remain private), etc. We do not need to know what brand of boxers a player wears, nor should we care. We do not need to know whether he likes blonds or brunettes, guys or girls. Such things are irrelevant, and I would (and have) shut down such conversations if they were brought to my attention. But if a player gets involved in a dispute with his girlfriend and it makes the paper, it's fair game here, too. Even then there are lines not to cross. Recently a former player was convicted of a crime and sentenced to life in prison. His situation was discussed here and he was thrown some grief for his actions – justifiable grief, and the same kind of grief we would toss at a private citizen (and have, if you look at threads in the Shed). To insinuate that I (or anyone else here) have crossed the line with a player and feel justified doing so because I bought a t-shirt is a gross oversimplification of the situation, and completely misrepresents what I've been saying. Your straw man does not represent my morals.
  6. I hope they do look. I hope they see that the ratio of praise to griping is probably 75:25, varying with the play on the field. I also hope they take to heart some of the criticism thrown their way. We have some awfully smart football guys here, with some very pertinent analyses of the play on the field. You could be a Husker player. For all you know I could be a former player. I suppose that's why we're not using our real names, isn't it? And to your comment about players' personal lives… that’s a gray area. When a player is involved with the law there is no way we're not going to discuss it here. When they accept that scholarship or walk-on offer, they're giving up a portion of their personal privacy. It's not exactly a fishbowl around here, either. There are a lot of times when certain players could justifiably accept a LOT more grief than they've been served here for their very public disgraces. However, as a board we tend to curtail such activity to realistic levels. There's a balance between justifiable outrage over criminal activity and digital lynching. 99.9% of the time our members at HuskerBoard stay within acceptable bounds. There have been times when the line has been crossed, and we've shut those members down, sometimes permanently. That's a case-by-case situation, and again, bring anything you find questionable to our attention and we'll look into it. I can't stress that enough.
  7. Of course, and I think we do a good job of that around here. I have seen a lot of frustration but nothing over the top. Like I said, if there are posts that cross the line in their criticism of the players or coaches, report those posts and the Mods will take a look at them. We have removed several threads/posts since the Texas game, but to my knowledge those were mostly Texas trolls. Again, I have yet to see a post that crosses the line. Let me or any other Mod know if you do, and that goes for everyone reading this thread. thank you knapplc.. no bad blood here.. for ex. do we really need to bring up duis, mips, mics after it has happened and go into it? ive never seen this but i could def see it.. ppl posting about kids not being able to play due to grades etc..and breaking it down and calling the players idiots, morons, dummies... you know what i'm saying? that has nothing to due with us fans. Does that have nothing to do with us fans? I'm a taxpayer and a booster and an ex-student of UNL. I've gone to more than fifty games and I have bought entirely too much Husker merchandise over the years. A lot of my money goes into that football program – far more than I can afford, really. Doesn't that kind of support grant me some rights to feedback for the coaches and players? I think it does. The whole of Husker Football is a symbiotic relationship. Without the team there are no fans. Without the fans there are no Huskers. Without each other, we're nothing. I think we most definitely have a say in the program, even if that say is from way, way, WAY off the sidelines.
  8. I think this is an interesting post. You have a point that many of the things that are posted here wouldn't be said to the players' faces, but that cuts both ways. It cuts several ways, in fact. First, I have met several players over the past year, including Zac Lee three separate times. I've chatted with Lee each time, just general stuff about the game, how his arm is doing, stuff like that. I asked him how he felt the day after he took 1,000 body shots against Oklahoma last year. One thing I did NOT do was gush all over him like a schoolgirl with a crush, even though I've gushed about him several times on the boards. You just don't do that in person. It's not in the nature of most Nebraskans to be overly effusive one way or the other in person. I have never met Niles in person. If I did, I'd shake his hand, tell him how happy I am that he's a Husker, and wish him well. I would not overtly criticize him to his face, but I would also not overtly praise him, either. In person is a totally different dynamic than over the internets.

  10. There is no "but" about it. These guys know what they're getting into when they come here. If they don't they've failed themselves and they've been failed by their parents/coaches/counselors. This is big-time college football. It's not a place where you go if you're unsure of your commitment to the game, the school and the fans. It is entirely reasonable to expect that a kid who accepts a scholarship at the University of Nebraska, a flagship school in the college football world, plays like they belong there. It is MOST CERTAINLY reasonable to expect that of our Seniors. It is also reasonable to expect that if they do not perform as they should, they should take some flak for it. If they want to play for a school where they're not going to be called on the carpet by the fans for asinine play, they went to the wrong school. Bottom line, end of story.
  11. They are young men. They are not children, and they are not going to cry themselves to sleep because the naughty people on the internet said a cross word at them. When they play like dog ass they have a reasonable expectation to take some flak for it. Posts like this just baffle me. What do you think the fans are going to do? Be happy our team played 200% below the level of ability we know they have? Do you really think we're not going to cry in our beer a little bit? Do you really think the players that had bizarre mental lapses which cost us the game aren't going to be discussed? If so, you have an entirely unrealistic view of the world. Further, I recommend you take some time, google some message boards for other teams, and see how those fans discuss their players and coaches after losses. If what you're seeing on HuskerBoard bothers you, you're going to flat-out have a conniption when you see how other fans react to their team's losses. Better have some paramedics standing by. EDIT - This goes for anyone reading the boards: If you see a post where a player or coach is unreasonably attacked, report the post. The Mod team will look at it, and take action if necessary. Maybe I'm missing some posts where the criticism goes over the top. So far, I haven't personally seen them, but I don't read everything on these boards. Mostly I just follow Fro around and read his stuff.
  12. That Calvin Johnson call was the worst call I've seen in... maybe ever. Ridiculous. The NFL is reviewing the catch rule this offseason, based largely on the uproar over that call. I think there was another, similar case recently, but the CJ call was the one I watched live. I knew the Bears had lost that game and I was standing in shock when they ruled it a no-catch.
  13. Cry me a river. Niles is a big kid and he can take it. We're not saying anything he isn't saying to himself - or should be saying, if he's honest. Niles a scholarship athlete, a senior, a team leader, a guy who publicly and in a very un-Nebraska like way demanded the ball, then proceeded to ONCE AGAIN put the ball on the turf. Being the "best fans" doesn't mean we have to sit back and accept this, and it's foolish for you to trot that line out in response to wholly deserved criticism of Niles' game.
  14. That is a good find, zoogies. Makes me feel a little better about this loss. If only we got a case of the drops against any other team, I'd be OK. But against this team... unbearable.
  15. I knew how to use Illustrator. In 1998.
  16. I am just happy we have a guy like Zac to fall back on when "it" hits the fan, and we need to pull our frazzled young starter. That game could have spiraled out of control and turned into an embarrassment, but Lee steadied the ship. You have to appreciate a guy like that. Also, if we have the North wrapped up by the time we play Colorado, I'd like to see Lee get some significant playing time. He's given a lot to this team, and he's been a class guy all the way.
  17. That's the problem with Niles Paul. You can't bench the guy because he's one play from the end zone, every time. It would be like if Martinez suddenly got a case of the yips - do you bench him when he fumbles, knowing the next play could be an 80-yard lightning streak down the sideline? That's a hard choice to make. Paul has all the ability in the world. The most frustrating thing about the guy is he could be a marquee player for this offense, and we've seen him do it several times. He's had brilliant runs after catch, and the next play dropped a sure TD. The one single play that best summarizes Niles Paul's career at Nebraska was that fumble against ISU when he made a pretty nice catch, eluded the DB, then as he was tight-roping down the sideline at blazing speed he knocks the ball against his own body, fumbling it IN BOUNDS, and away from himself so quickly that he can't recover it, AND right into the hands of the ISU safety. Pure brilliance followed by mind-numbing boneheadedness. The Niles giveth, and the Niles taketh away.
  18. We used to have a guy on the team a few years back who always looked for the big hit but never wrapped up. It cost us several times, as I recall. I think his name was ......Ricky Thenarse. Seems some guys just won't learn.
  19. Methinks we can help Bo here. What say you? My first "out of the box" idea is get rid of the lucky horseshoe and get rid of the flashy tunnel walk, even though the fans love it so much. I'm pretty sure we, the fans, love winning a lot more. Serious question here - what role do you think tunnel walks and lucky horseshoes play in Husker losses?
  20. We still have five mythical national championships to their four. And three Heisman winners to their two. It's small comfort, but it's some comfort.
  21. Not sure where else this would go, so here is probably OK. Fact is, this is bunk, and some simple googling would have shown that to the writer(s) of this article. Not only has cancer been known about for thousands of years by physicians, but there are fossilized tumors in dinosaur bones. The very name "cancer" comes from tumors' resemblance to a crab, and is ancient Greek in origin.
  22. You really need to know the rules before you complain about a call. This applies to the game commentators as much as you. Eventually someone clued them in that the college rule is different than the pro. The whole issue is whether the ball breaks the plane or not. The player can be almost fully in the end zone as long as the ball doesn't break the plane. That said, the ball might've broken the plane, but we never saw that view. As for the Sirles hold, as he was toppling over backwards he grabbed the guy's jersey, enough to throw him off balance and fall. Blatant hold, and unless the guy was falling anyway, it was going to be a sack. You could call it a ticky-tack call because he didn't get much jersey or hold it long, but I don't see how anyone can say it wasn't a hold. I think a lot of the griping about that call is coming from the dozen or so pictures people have seen from the last 10-15 games where our D Line has holes ripped in their jerseys from holding that is never called.
  23. I think we'll lose at least one more October game. Too many areas in which to improve, too little evidence showing that we will.
  24. Sorry, I missed your post. My bad. +1 to you, too.
