  1. I would say that it is obvious that VY has some severe emotional problems and therefore probably wouldn't have been able to overcome the clot like TF did. Emotional stability is paramount in being a leader in tough times, that is what separates the two for their careers. Tommie was a better leader, VY was more talented physically but the mental part of the game is hands down Tommie's. Also, don't tell me Tommie had a way better team. VY had just as much talent, he just couldn't make them dominant as a unit like Tommie could. Vince Young had the single greatest performance in CFB history. If you argue that you either didn't watch the game or are drinking so much Kool-Aid you're about to drown in it. Tommie's Fiesta Bowl was great, but a lot of those stats came after we were kicking Florida's ass. He also had a weaker opponent and better RBs. Young almost single handedly made every play needed in that 4th qtr. That game was awesome as I was rooting so hard for Texas because I hate USC. Just my $.02.
  2. because I don't think Bo takes the "every position is up for grabs" thing lightly. Nobody has earned anything for 2009 yet in his eyes.
  3. You, sir have hit the nail directly on the head. Not a great passer beyond a first look and a dump off. We'll see as/if he develops. Wait...what?! As a true freshmen he completed 60% of his passes and had a 5 to 1 touchdown to interception ratio. (playing in the big 12 south no less!). If he played for Nebraska he would be starting, and we'd be thrilled to have him. Pretty easy to complete 60% of your passes when the majority of the catches were made by TE and RB. Not saying he wouldn't start here, just saying he isn't better than Robinson. That is ridiculous.
  4. My money is on Brett Maher, a redshirt Freshman out of Kearney. Thanks
  5. the article says that the revenue for football was 85% of the total athletic department. That should cause a raise right there. Also, don't you think NU is a prestige job? It is, and we will win a lot of bidding wars. I guess a sellout streak and total devotion to the program by millions doesn't give you any income? Why do you think that we can give a raise right now after buying out Pud and Callahan? It is because this program has money, I hate that we always try to pretend it doesn't. They have major cashflow. Even Osborne has said on several occasions that the athletic department is on "very solid ground", and with his calm demeanor....well take it how you want to take that. edit: also, if you don't think the head coach of Nebraska should be paid at least middle of the road in the B12 you are seriously underestimating the pressure this job entails. I would argue that is should be top 3 considering the expectations and history that come with this program barely ten years removed from the most dominant stretch in college football history.
  6. You, sir have hit the nail directly on the head. Not a great passer beyond a first look and a dump off. We'll see as/if he develops.
  7. Robinson is the 3rd best in the conference. IMO You put Robinson behind OU's offensive line and watch out. I agree with you.
  8. Here's kinda my rough break down. Offense Line: Pretty much set minus the right guard position, which has D.J. Jones as the front runner but Henry could be making a run. Don't forget about Christensen as well. Backs: Helu and Q are the 1 and 2 punch. Quarterback position is up for grabs of course, but from hearing the coaches (and following my own personal wants) I think Lee will eventually be named starter but it is still way too early to tell. WR's: Very open position but we pretty much know most of the guys would make an impact this year in Paul and Bell. Hopefully Mendoza will be able to wow/impress some people over there. Tight Ends: McNeil and Young are the most popular returning starters, but they both proved last season that their run blocking game wasn't that good. If somebody like a Redshirt Freshman Ben Cotton can step up I can see quite a few rotations at that position Defense Line: Suh is (all "competition" talk aside) the returner at DT and will probably have Crick next to him at the other DT spot, but Steinkuhler and Moore could make a run at some playing time given they have both have impressed coaches. Barry Turner will probably get his DE spot back if he overcome his last few mental hurdles and get back to his playing ability, but other than that I'm not sure about who the backups would be and who the other starter would be. The only other name that pops in my head right now is Josh Williams but I know i'm forgetting some. DBacks: Extremely open for right now. Asante, O'Hanlon, and Thenarse are names that pop out to me, but my knowledge is a little weak as far as who could be playing back there Corners: Knowledge on this spot is low too, other than the fact that Hagg has switched over there and after his big game against Clemson I'm sure he has been impressing a lot of coaches. Linebackers: Dillard needs to get back on good terms with the coaches and prove he can play. Kolton Koehler and Matthew May are in good position to get starting time, but there are also many young guys like Redshirt Freshman Will Compton who have been impressing the coaches a lot and could get quite a few reps this fall. The other DE you are looking for would be Pierre Allen, Sr. He started every game after Turner went down and did a great job considering his youth and inexperience. The DB's are wide open, but Hagg moved to Safety. I would look at Blue, West, Amukamura, and JC transfer Gomes I think is his name at CB. I would argue that Koehler and May were stop gaps and won't see the field much this year, could be wrong. Didn't May get moved to SS or was that speculation? Does anybody know who will punt for us?
  9. I've heard this before and it is ridiculous. How would playing a team that couldn't beat the second string help them get any better?
  10. Because it's usually pretty clear by that time that the Chiefs aren't gonna be needing their stadium for football by that point in the season.... hahahahahahaha..... and the same could be said recently about the Cowboys, the other site of the game!
  11. Are you freaking kidding me? They're not going to know you're going to have a system that you blab to the papers about? Is it going to be like our brilliant new defensive gameplan against Missouri, or how we talked about how we were going to throw a lot of quick slants against OU? Maybe I'm missing something Yes you are... Pierre Allen said, and I quote, "They’re probably not going to know that we can do it" Which is completely different from, as you said, "They're not going to know you're going to have a system that you blab to the papers about?" One = knowing while the other = doing and they are completely different constructs. See the difference? Not sure what you are getting at. I'm aware that knowing and doing are two different words. Still. Is Allen not saying, at least implicitly, that "we'll be able to do it but they probably won't know that we will be able to"? I mean there's much talk about this being a surprise tactic. I don't see how the element of surprise is preserved here: As another poster said, maybe they are not giving away too much that an offense could prepare for anyway. But it just seems kind of like "hey everyone! guess what! we just came up with this brand new strategy where defenders do such-and-such!! can't wait to surprise you all with it!!" Maybe it's not that bad. It won't help opposing offenses any more than knowing that said offenses will look to the sidelines and get a check call would help an opposing defense. I wouldn't call this revolutionary but it is fantastic, it allows a team with a less than motivated (Dillard) or very green MLB make good defensive calls. Much like a young QB needs the help, so does the MLB. Having said that I now think I remember the SS in Pelini's scheme made the calls?? Something mentioned before about it being the hardest spot on the defense, I believe??
  12. “He’s really picked up where he left off,” Pelini said. “I think he’s bigger, he’s faster. I think he’s feeling good. He looks like he’s smaller and he’s actually carrying more weight. Obviously the strength staff did a tremendous job and you got to give credit to Roy. He worked his tail off and it’s paying off for him.” Generally if you look smaller and gained weight it is not fat, especially when the strength staff's great job is acknowledged.....
  13. Yeah, they are soooooooo great at that: Evidence #1 - this guy: Evidence #2 - this team: One..the Chiefs suck and always will. I'm talking the entire NFL. Two..if you go by the other ways to measure talent, Leaf would be superhuman. Parade all american, fantastic career in college, record setting for his conference. Overall the NFL is a much better judge of talent than a bunch of fat geeks using formulas for 40 times for high school kids. My point was NOBODY can predict accurately how someone will perform in the future - HS, college or NFL. There are too many variables. Brady was an after thought - Leaf got into a situation that wasn't productive for what ever reason. If he got drafted by another team his situation might have been better. How many Husker recruits were flame outs? I agree, but a good NFL career is a good barometer of how talented said player was in college. Much better than a recruiting "expert's" prediction before they are in a single college practice.
  14. 15. OK. I'll play. First, the assumption that talent on a college football team is best measured by the predictions of college football success based upon High School performance --- this is, based upon recruiting rankings, is very flawed. The talent of a college football team is MUCH BETTER measured by players exiting that team and making it in the NFL draft. On this basis, many of the Osborne teams of the 90's were very, very, very talented. Scores of players went to the NFL. Without looking this up and getting actual numbers, I'd guess that NU definitely, absolutely were in the top 10 most every year of the 1990's in terms of players drafted (perhaps not every year, but most years, and even in off years they were in the top 20 anyhow). Many years they were in the top 5 --- again a guess --- someone with more time can validate or invalidate this. The point --- the Husker teams of the 90's had a great deal of talent. Now compared to USC these past 6-7 years (that is NU in the 90's vs. USC in the 2000's) I'd guess that USC in the 2000's had more players drafted per year on average than did the Huskers and yes, I'd say that the talent edge probably goes to USC --- but probably not by as wide a gap as most would guess. HS recruiting evaluations (recruiting rankings) are meaningless compared to exiting players drafted. by this measure, NU was very talented and even in view of that talent NU over-achieved. USC is even more talented in the 2000's than was NU in the 1990's (likely by a closer margin than most think) but they grossly under-achieved. NU had a superior system and better coaching than does USC. For what it is worth, Pete Carrol is the most over-rated coach in the nation --- with the talent he has, he should have won at least one and probably two more MNC's than he has. USC has little excuse not to win essentially every game. Carrol can recruit (and it is easy to do so at USC), but manage the egos and get the guys to play hard, tough, consistent football at or near their peek --- no --- not so good. Osborne and his staff could and did maximise the productivity from what they had. This is why NU in the 1990's was more sucessful than USC has been in the 2000's. Osborne was a superior coach relative to Carrol. Carrol had more talent (again not by the margin one might think) but he could not elicit from that talent the performance needed to dominate. Actually, right now arguably Florida is the team of the 2000's, not USC. That is exactly what I have previously stated. Let the NFL be the judge of talent, not websites...
  16. BTW, not trying to start a fight here just saying there is more than one way to judge talent....
  17. Talent level of SC with RARELY ever getting top 10 recruiting classes and having walkon FBs, OL and DL... GET REAL! Did you even read the quote you highlighted? He said when we have the talent. So whats up with all the sarcasim? We may never have the talent USC has, but our recruiting classes will get better each year, now that Bo has us on the right track. Also you did not respond to my post above. IDIOT! The 90s teams very RARELY had top 10 recruiting classes, so their talent WAS no where near SC's, you need to get some reading comprehension skills! Nearly all their FBs in the 90s were WALKONS that earned ships! GET YOU SOME! This is about the 90s, not Bo and today! The 90s teams score big points and beat folks up while doing it. OU's fast striking offense caused their defense headaches and had them losing to UT and Florida. They ran the ball on the gators, but could not on Texas. I think you have fallen into believing that football talent is measured by stars out of high school instead of $ in the NFL. Those teams had an unbelievable amount of NFL talent on them, and nobody judges talent better than the NFL. Don't tell me they weren't as talented as USC is now. The best player from USC is Reggie Bush, the best player from NU is Tommie Fraizer based on college results. Yet Reggie isn't better than the third best player of that time for NU..... Ahman Green is a better RB than Reggie Bush. It isn't an opinion, it is a fact. He had nearly identical stats his Jr. year (based on carries) and was a MUCH better pro. Even earned All-Pro and several pro bowls. Ahman Green is the second best RB from NU during that time and third best overall player during that run.
  18. May reminds me a lot of Scott Connot from Spencer. Connot went on to star at South Dakota State as a safety. After college, he was invited to a tryout with the Chiefs. He measured in at 6'2 217 and ran a 4.43. He spent 3 seasons on their practice squad as a Safety and was a differnce maker in NFL Europe. Guys like Connot are the type of athletes Nebraska needs to sign as walk-ons. You can win a lot of games with future NFL practice squad players as either depth or upperclassmen starters. Don't get me wrong, you need guys who will become NFL draft picks to win championships, but walk-ons who can sniff the NFL are imperative to Nebraska. That, sir, is a well thought spot on post. Bravo my man.
  19. I'm fairly certain North Carolina was an excellent basketball school far before Mack Brown or Brad Daugherty. Being my favorite team and my uncle being an ex-manager for the team, I have heard of this guy they called Dean.......
  20. 1999 finished the season ranked #2. 2001 Went to the National Championship game, and had a Heisman trophy winner. I would think those teams would be considered elite. Besides, he was talking about the program not individual teams.
  21. Let me see if I've got this straight - these days "almost everyone can see any football game on a given saturday (sic)" but a recruit will choose to stay close to home so that his parents can see him play...even though "almost everyone can see any football game on a given saturday (sic)"? I assume logic is not the poster's strong suit... There's a big difference between having your parents at the game in person and having them see it on TV. Used to be..We were good for at least three games on TV and an annual Bowl game at a nice resort town...even a few games at Hawaii to attract kids. One of the big roadblocks for these kids was homesickness..no matter how much they may have thought they wanted to escape Mom and/or Dad, they suddenly find they miss them...and the bratty little siblings, or to be able to see an old Girlfriend who now doesn't have a curfew. Us being on TV meant the kid could be seen by the girl he had a crush on in third grade who's family moved to the East coast before Jr. High..and he'd lost all hope of contacting again...Or all your Cousins in Colorado and Missouri could see you and you could rub their noses in it at the next family reunion...Maybe even be noticed by some hot Playboy Playmate and sought after...But the trade-off was that quite possibly..Your immediate family might never get to come see you play a game in person unless Nebraska played the College team near your hometown. Now..With all the extra channels/Satellite...Even East Carolina had more appearances than us last season.. More kids can be on TV AND have their parents at the game to pat them on the head after EACH game and fix them a fresh batch of home made Possum Innards..or loan them date money..or have a place to wash your clothes every other weekend...Or your Dad is near to help you work on your car or just give you advice about how to deal with a crazy teacher. We needed every advantage we could get our hands on because of our location (Population/weather)... We were so far ahead of almost everyone as far as weight training and supplements..(They were legal at the time, but still unknown about the long-term effects and it's probably still a race to keep ahead of the ban of any of the new derivatives....But now..almost everyone has copied our lesson plan and caught up. (Biochemists keep tweaking them to make them different enough to be legal..the laws keep changing to include the new offshoots). The only way I see of us continuing to separate ourselves from the herd is if we can afford to keep up or maybe even expand our walk-on program...It enables more reps..more specialization...And more exposure of the 5-Star guys to several guys with great work ethic and heart. And besides..the thing that made all of our previous successes so special...was that by and large we were made up of Mutts that flew under everyone's radar... with more heart than natural talent...Local kids and even kids from small towns across the country...where the town were small enough to have everyone pull for the kid and support him any way they could.. Oh..and a consistent Coaching staff that was going to be there all 4-5 years they were there who got them to play above their heads on a regular basis..
  22. I don't care for him anymore either. I would like to know what was said in Peter's book though. BTW, This may be becoming a stretch for the husker football forum. Christian and Jason's little brother Damian dove into a swimming pool the summer after HS graduation and broke his neck, leaving him paralyzed for a few months and obviously unable to play football anymore. On signing day that previous Feb Lou Holtz said that Damian was "the best offensive lineman that ND had ever recruitied." After the accident he was in the hospital for 8 months and never once got a phone call from Lou Holtz. No assistants, not one contact. Guess who did call, Tom Osborne. Several times in fact, just to make sure he was okay and if he could do anything. Eventually TO helped Damian transfer from ND to NU where he graduated. This was after Damian went to watch practice several times and was never approached by any coach at ND. f#*k Lou Holtz, f#*k Notre Dame. I hated those a$$hole$ before I read that book, now I wish failure on anyone associated with either Holtz himself or that university.
  23. Because those two statements have absolutely no correlation to starting for Nebraska. Jamal Lord? Cool, but what does that have to do with now? Iowa State? Neat, but what does that have to do with us? Nothing. It's pretty easy to "win" an argument using logical fallacies. most of them are just stumbling around the point of the thread because they dont want to go against what the media has brainwashed them to believe. Tebow is average at best yet some people cant see it because they only look at stats they do not actually watch him. That is one of the most ignorant comments I have ever read. I hate to break everybody's hard on for Joe Ganz, but he is average at best. Seriously, you guys don't think Tebow is a better player than Ganz in college? This is asinine. Do you think Eric Crouch would start if he were at NU right now? How about, as Guy put it, Tommie Frazier? If you say that Tebow wouldn't excel in this offense then they wouldn't, and that is just plain retarded. Take off the rose colored glasses, put down the Kool-Aid. I liked watching Ganz, and it sucks not to have him anymore, but let's not make the guy out to be Joe Montana, Brett Favre, and Johhny Unitas all rolled into one. Ganz is a hard worker, a leader, but he's not even top 5 all time at NU (Frazier, Crouch, Gill, Frost, Tagge, S. Taylor, Humm, Ferragamo). No way Ganz is better than Tebow, no matter the offense. All that being said, I hate Tim Tebow with an unbrideled passion that burns hotter than the hellfire and brimstone commanded by Satan himself. Frankly no i do not think any of eric crouch tommie frazier or tim tebow. we run a pass offense, they are/were running qbs. have you even watched any of our games this past season? how would you even think that any of them would thrive in a passing offense. after calling my post "ignorant", you went on to prove why you are incorrect. the pros that you compared ganz to were all, well pros.....and some of the best of all time. saying that ganz is not top 5 all time at NU is inaccurate ass well. you are comparing mostly running qbs to a mostly passing qb that ganz is heads and shoulders above when it comes to passing. but yes you are correct that these running qbs are better runners than ganz. the thread that was started basically asked "would tebow start over ganz in THIS offense?" not "which player would you rather have?" we pass the ball more than we run the ball and after just watching both passing the ball again ganz is still who i would choose to start in THIS offense. when watching tebow the only thing that i see that makes me think that he is slightly above average is his ability to lower his shoulder and break one or two tackles and even then he is not a shifty runner and he is not going to make you miss him with his agility. everything else about him is average at best, he does not read through his progressions well, he is a bad passer, he keys in on his receiver as soon as he gets the ball in his hands.........need i go on? just watch him and you will see it. The reason why your comment, post, and understanding of THIS OFFENSE is ignorant is because the west coast offense and the spread offense, not to mention this cooridinator, adapt to the personnel you have. They don't force a square peg into a round hole. That is why Tebow would be better than Ganz in this offense, because it would adapt for him and his strengths. Strengths that, frankly, fit the midwest and the wind and cold better than slinging the ball all over the place. Also, I made the point about the pro QB because some are overrating Mr. Ganz a little bit. I purposely picked the three best of all time. Like I have said before, he was fun to watch and won some games for us and I wish we had him another year but he is not an all time great here where Tim Tebow would be. All this and I don't even like the guy, I agree with your assesment of his passing ability. You are overlooking the fluidity of the offense Nebraska runs now and thus dismissing Tebow's talents in a run spread offense which Watson would run to take advantage of said talents. I know you don't like Tebow, and he isn't going to be a good pro QB. That much is true, but don't allow that to skew your judgement on his ability to be an excellent college QB. That is why I compared him to Crouch and Frazier, they were recruited for an offense and did nothing but win championships and awards. Just like Tebow.
