Recruiting Misses and Their Effect on Perception of Coaches
teachercd replied to Mavric's topic in Husker Football
Well then let's start targeting our next coach; the guy who always wins enough, lands bushel baskets of top recruits, and has never been blown out. You go first. But we hired a super experienced coach to avoid these things. That is the issue. People need to stop acting like Riley was some sweet up and comer who was at a small school and was getting his shot at a young age. You love Riley and that is great. I am totally indifferent on who the coach is I just want them to win. -

Yep, exaclty So what you're saying is that people make a bigger deal out of it when they're predisposed to not liking the coach. Then you mock the coach for being "likable." sh#t happens. We're thin. We'll know more when the games are played. Who's mocking the coach? teachercd. Who agreed with this post. Just to be clear: as much as we loved mild-mannered good guy Tom Osborne, most Husker fans would trade pleasantness for wins if that was the choice. Which it isn't. I am actually mocking the fans that pretend like they care if the coach is nice... -

We know the things that cost coaches jobs at NU. 1. Not winning enough 2. Getting blown out 3. Putting yourself on probation by not filling up your 85 scholarships. Riley is checking all the boxes and has 40 years of experience. That is scary. I LOVE LOVE LOVE what he has done with his coaching staff. I just hope that he can figure out the rest. If not...it will be fun when the next search starts. -

Interestingly, I've been re-watching last years games (shill for my youtube channel), and in either the Indiana game, the announcers mentioned that Riley is the 2nd most experienced coach in CFB (42 years), next to Saban (44 years). Wow! -

Riley is nice and well liked...that is why this is not a "problem" for a lot of fans right now. Sad thing is he is I need his 30th year of coaching and these are mistakes that new coaches make. -

How is this class Bo-like? I understand losing Blades hurt bad, but we had two better wide receivers than Keyshawn and two better than Watts is what it sounds like. Not having a secondary player in this class sucks, but look we got Tyjon who is elite, Gebbia who I think everyone here believes his future is really bright, Roberts who looks to be a great linebacker as a true freshman, McQuitty with high upside, and Thomas who has drawn raves of playing this year. This class is definitely better than Bo's classes. Blades was the only huge loss IMO. Keyshawn will be back but he wouldn't of contributed this year. Ranking wise...this is now a bo class -
Meh, swipe left. I know which way I am swiping!

2018 class is currently sitting at #22, around the same place we normally end up. http://247sports.com/Season/2018-Football/CompositeTeamRankings Would like to point out that we sit at 22nd with ten recruits. Ten. That is true but it is going to be a small class, like 18? -

The likelihood of a player qualifying is a huge factor when it comes to recruiting. A lot of very skilled players will not get offers from top schools because those schools are afraid of them qualifying academically. Can anything be blamed on Riley? First year was toxins...recruiting classes are on the players and high school teachers... Riley is starting to sound like my wife...never does anything wrong! ZING Never said he can't be blamed for anything. I just don't see how it is the coaches fault that a 18-19 year old kid decided to blow the chance of a lifetime. It is the kids fault he didn't qualify for school, not the coaches fault. The coach makes his decisions based on the facts before him at the time, he can't see in the future to determine the character of the kid. Finally, if you read my post correctly, I said people that were blaming BO and Riley are idiots, not just those blaming Riley. I hear you I do. But NU and Riley are probably not in a position to be taking guys that might not make it...we have heard about these depth issues over and over and their first job should be fixing it...not making it worse. -
just looks like more of the same Bo like class I agree...Kind of sad and in the end if the recruiting is the same and the wins are less...well...this is going to be the worst hire ever.i wouldn't say the worst hire ever he is very nice after all That is true!

Hope so!

Remember we were told that Bo was not fired just because he was mean but because he can't win big games and because he sucked at recruiting. Well...Riley's classes are the same and he can't win big games* yet. I know people want to say MSU but Bo beat MSU a lot. Just hate to see history repeated. -

Remember how Bo was crucified for having around 80 guys on scholarship entering fall camp? I 'member. #memberberries "Bo is basically putting us on probation by not having 85 guys on scholarship" Yep, I remember. So, basically Riley is managing the roster like he did at Oregon State, when he had a hard time getting anywhere near the 85 scholarship limit on an annual basis. Was that the case at OSU? -

1. Will the Huskers host a Friday night home game for sure in the near future? 2. How do you think this will impact the city of Lincoln as far as parking, restaurants, bars and possibly even the U having to cancel classes on that Friday (Not a big deal, I know) but it seems like for Lincoln this might be a bad idea?

I have seen fans (posting on other sites) that this means at least one more loss this year and that now they are "okay" with 6 to 7 wins. Ugggg
