  1. We did have a great line last year. But we only were able to play with them for half a season. This year we have more depth so we will be in a better position if we have similar injuries (as long as Lewis stays healthy). The comment about the old days. Not many top flight athletes are willing to play only a few seasons. It's all about getting to the league as soon as you can. High schoolers are closer to ready physically now. Guys like Tyler Moore (sore subject I know) don't want to come to a school they can't start at by their sophomore year.
  2. you mean the last 4-5 years? we've been "rebuilding" the pipeline for years now. I don't remember losing 3-4 starters from the line in the past 4-5 years. When Cally left there was a HUGE hole in depth on the lines. Bo has gradually filled that but it takes time. Last year we would have been pretty respectable up front without injuries. This year we are actually in a position that not counting Lewis, we can have injuries to other positions and not drop off significantly. We haven't been able to do that in a long time.
  3. Saw a response to Sam on Twitter, was in the car and didn't have a chance to save it. Anyway, they pointed out that if you counted sacks as pass attempts (which they do in NFL but for some reason college has always counted them as runs), we were actually a few yards better per carry over the season and about 1 for the 8 games he specifically targeted.
  4. Athletics go in cycles. The south, specifically the SEC, have had a great run for the last several years. But I remember the 90s when NU, Miami (Big East), Florida State (ACC), Michigan, Penn State, and others were mentioned nearly every year as title favorites. Sure Florida and Tennessee won theirs but it wasn't a given. Things will change, specifically I expect the 8 conference game season to be the SECs downfall. The B1G is gaining ground in bowl games against the SEC. In the near future I see a time when voters realize that the SEC isn't automatically the best and they have to start looking at resume. It may be that extra game against Maryland that Ohio State played that puts them over LSU who played the Citadel in week 10. Maybe I am wrong but human nature is to get complacent and that leads to failure.
  5. Do you honestly think Nebraska would be in a better position if they stayed in the Big 12? In what ways has the B1G hurt Nebraska? Voting us out of the AAU. If you followed the voting for the AAU membership you will remember our old foe. Texas went out of their way to ensure we didn't stay in and that they could still vote for us. This was nearly entirely because of us giving UT the finger. If I remember correctly there were a few B1G teams that voted us out but it was due to some technicality. And membership in the B1G comes with their research dollars and gives any graduate of NU the chance to get a graduate degree at another B1G school.
  6. I think he is discounting the line we had to play with last year. Also a hurt Armstrong or non running threat of Kellogg gave the D an advantage. If we stay healthy we will be fine. Lewis Cotton on the left will give us an advantage we haven't had in years.
  7. Phil is upset that the past 3 years he has picked NU to win the division and we haven't impressed. I think he is being reserved this time to hedge his bets. Also he is more of a historian. His predictions are 4-5 paragraphs about the last few years with a few sentences on the upcoming year.
  8. Sounds like we can all step away from the ledge. KW is not out for te season. Strained ligament and sprained ankle. With any luck he will be back by MSU.
  9. Brian Kelly just said that statement at the ND media day. Their schedule is below. Not exactly what I consider the toughest. Only 4 true road games. I see FSU and Stanford as top notch opponents. Michigan, Northwestern, Carolina, USC and ASU as solid but not world beaters. Then a whole lot of fillers. Honestly if we make the B1G title game I don't see a huge difference in our schedules assuming we play MSU twice or OSU.
  10. I will never get the idea that not practicing a relatively normal play leads to turnovers. I understand if it's a swinging gate or halfback pass or something like that. But if it's just a different set of routes for a pass play or new twist on a run play. It's not like a running backs assignment changes dramatically if they run off tackle verses midline. Plus even if it is different run the play 10-15 times the day you install it and you are fine.
  11. His breakdowns are ao thorough. There really isn't anyone else that dives into the details quite like Paul. Not sure if it's good or bad that I had the same 11-1 record for this year. Great minds...
  12. This says a lot more about Maurice and Williams than the starters. Curry realized even they passed him on the depth chart and he wasn't going to see much time. We can complain about losing 3rd string depth but the same people will also complain that we kept a kid on the roster for 2 years while younger kids played over them. Now we have another scholarship to spend in a year where our recruiting is already going great. The only negative I see is if injuries hit DT we may have to burn some redshirts.
  13. 8 SEC teams in the top 25. Great way to build up that conference. No matter who beats who someone is guaranteed to remain ranked. I have a feeling that this may be another year that the SEC takes a step back compared to the rest of college football.
  14. As long as RG4 stays healthy we will be fine at DE this year. He changes the game so much with his abilities. McMullen is solid for a strong side DE but does do anything the other backups or Collins (if he slides over) can do. The reason it looks bad is we haven't seen any if the backups play ball yet. I actually like our DE depth with the caveat of RG4.
  15. Wasn't alive for JR but I say no. Watching that video I realized the return he had against Bama was better athletically than the OU play. Both are amazing but one gets more pub from a great radio call and a great moment everyone from that era remembers.
  16. I don't see us doing it again. I know we didn't after the 2001 OU game. If not then I don't know what it would take.
  17. Had a conversation with some friends and were trying to figure out the last time the goalposts came down in Lincoln. I remember being at games in the 90s when they did but I can't remember when. My first thought was TOs last home game. That or after the 95 regular season.
  18. This type of event doesn't get enough credit. Congrats Graduate athletes!
  19. Actually recruiting at Wake for football is tough. They have a tougher academic standard to qualify and Wake is a really small school with a total enrollment of just 7,400, so they don't have the athletic resources and facilities other schools have. They have never made the financial commitment to upgrade their facilities and struggle to get revenues to do so, focus is definitely on academics. They also are right there with UNC in their geographic back yard. Obviously Duke, which has similar challenges, has turned it around recently but frankly they are at the level Grobe had awake at a few years ago by going to 3 straight bowl games. Not sure Duke can expect much more. Their recruiting is still a big tier down from their larger ACC brethren. I don't see much of a difference in academics to WF and Duke Stanford Northwestern Gtech etc. The amount of talent in the Carolinas is nearly equal to the entire old B1G footprint. A good coach and recruiter should have no troubles recruiting elite athletes to WF and Grobe did.
  20. Grobe was average at a school in a recruiting location with a poor conference to play. Throughout his career he never caught fire anywhere. He may have avoided some if the rookie mistakes Bo has made but overall we would be worse if we picked him.
  21. Turnovers are the most important stat other than the score. We will be better this year just depends in how much better we are.
  22. This is the line of thinking I use to justify my optimism. We weren't bad last year with tre injuries. We should be very good this year.
  23. Two very talented guys from SEC country. We have to get ~5 of these type players every year.
