  1. I know this probably won't happen, but if T-Mart ends up starting or being 2nd string, I'd really like for Green to take his RS year and develop a little bit more confidence. By the time he's competing for the job next year, he'll be much improved. That said, if T-Mart ends up getting lots of snaps this year, it will be hard for Green to close that gap next year.
  2. I'll give you the Missouri game, but scoring the 1 yard TD against Oklahoma proved nothing to me. I know he sucked it up for the sake of the team, I'm just saying that there were not many moments last year where I was encouraged by Lee's performance.
  3. Did he pass any of his "tests" last year? I wouldn't say he even came close. All the big games last year, he pretty much choked. I don't like the idea of everyone wanting Lee to start just because he has experience...he showed me nothing last year to prove that he was capable of leading this team to where it needs to go. If he has made improvements to the point where he can be an asset, great. I hope he has the best season a Husker QB has ever had, and I wholeheartedly mean that. I just want the best man to win the job, whether it be Lee, Green (no E on the end), Martinez (no hyphen), Carnes, Washington, Spano, Kellogg, or a 1-armed walk on from Alaska. Just give this offense the best chance at success by putting the BEST PLAYER under center. Not the most experienced, not the game manager...just best player, period.
  4. just getting ready to post it myself, good find, twitter is turing into a gold mine for husekr football news Twitter is a gold mine, period. Almost all the stories I read, I hear about from Twitter first. Definitely glad I started following some Husker writers/sources on there.
  5. Sipple's article on Martinez making a push
  6. I don't disagree, but I think it's closer than some would think right now.
  7. Not sure how many of you have seen the message board rumblings lately, but here is what Steve Sipple says about the QB race as of about an hour ago (per Twitter): "Lots of buzz about Taylor Martinez taking a big step forward in #Huskers QB race. One source gives me this advice: Believe the buzz." Also several other posters on various boards are hearing big things about T-Mart right now. I don't know about anyone else, but I just want the season to get here. This stuff just gets me so excited for the opener, only to realize that we still have 2 weeks.
  8. I voted for Lee, but in reality it could be him or Green (or even Martinez)...just so long as we get steady QB play. All the other guys are important too, but without a solid QB performance this year, this team has a ceiling no higher than last year's. I understand we almost won the big 12 without a good QB, but we can't put it all on our defense again.
  9. I'd love to see a return to that style of play...It really does make it easier to recruit QBs (you could take LaTravis Washington, Taylor Martinez and other ATH/QB type guys each year and let them do what they do best.), and it's a good way to control the tempo of the game. The only real drawback of the option offense is the inability to play catch up or generate quick scores. You really have to have a good defense in order to keep the other team in check while you execute your game plan. I truly believe that the running game and a good defense is still the most effective way to win games consistently...but I grew up watching the Bears and Cornhuskers, so I may be biased
  10. and who in the hell is that #1?? #11 has a great ability to go up and get the ball. Man, they had a lot of talent on that team. Ace Sanders was #1 on that team, he signed with South Carolina after defecting from USF (like Carnes) when the coach got fired. Carnes, Sanders and Blakely (he's in the 2011 class) were/are all rated as 4* players for Manatee, and another WR (#11) Bundrage will probably go somewhere decent after this year as well. He's already got offers from Iowa State, Cincy, and Marshall. Blakely (#7 in that video) is a RB who's got offers from Florida, Miami, Iowa, N Carolina, Auburn, Clemson, etc... That team was/still is stacked.
  11. For being rated nearly the same as Green, Turner, and Starling (all 5.8, 4 star dual-threats according to rivals), Carnes doesn't seem to get as much love. I'm a big fan of his, and I think he's got the ability to be a VERY good QB at Nebraska...Probably my 2nd favorite after Green, right now.
  12. I agree, Carnes has that look...not sure why. None of the other guys really strike me as "looking the part"...T-Mart maybe.
  13. The one who really put on weight was T-Mart, but his is all muscle. He looks huge for a pretty small QB.
  14. Go look at other pics of Cody from practice before saying he's put on bad weight. He looks very good in other shots.
  15. I understand people are optimistic that Lee will come back healthy and develop into a solid starting QB on a top level team...but I just don't have that confidence right now. I think he and Green will be closer at 1/2 than people think, but they are quite a bit better than option #3, Martinez. Martinez does bring some unique skills to the table for a wildcat type of situation, and considering he's a QB, that should be a very interesting wildcat type of formation. I think people are too down on both Lee and Green after last year. Neither of them were in good situations, and Green was a true freshman on top of that. Personally, my choice would be Green 1/Lee 2. I don't see it going that way, at least not initially. I think we'll see Lee get the starts for the first few games, and Cody sprinkled in every now and then, as well as packages for Martinez.
  16. Gotta believe there's no way Lee isn't the starter if healthy. I really do like both Green and Martinez, and I think they could both be very good in certain situations. I do not think that this is the situation for either of them, although we will see what happens when the WKU game comes around. I really am excited to see the QBs in live action, because each one brings a unique skill set to the table for this offense. Lee is our best passer, with okay running ability. Martinez is our best runner, with okay passing skills. Green possesses the best combo of the two, being better than Martinez at passing and better than Lee at running. Personally, I'd like to see Green take over, but he'll have to make some serious strides in fall camp for that to happen. It's going to be Lee's job to lose, IMO.
  17. To write a kid off before he starts his TRUE SOPHOMORE season is premature. Yes he's got a long way to go as a passer, so does every other QB on our roster. Also, it's fairly obvious that this staff is starting to look more towards athletic QBs, which bodes well for Cody. All these guys (Green, Martinez, Carnes, Starling, Turner) are great athletes, NONE of them have the most desirable throwing skills if you ask me. Can anyone honestly say that any of these guys would perform better as a true freshman in a jumbled up offense with iffy WRs? Heck, Lee couldn't do much and he's been in our system for years. To be quite honest, Turner is my favorite out of all the QBs (current/committed) and I think he's going to be the biggest challenger for the job next year when Lee graduates (assuming he even gets healthy and regains the job this year). The kid is absolutely explosive and has a great attitude. He's going to be fun. But in the meantime, I'll give Cody every benefit of the doubt until he proves he can't get it done on the field. Obviously the coaches like something in Cody.
  18. Based on the fact Lee is returning next year, you'd think that would be enough for Watson to nail down exactly what offense will succeed from the 1st snap in 2010. But, what if Cody Green steps up this spring & hits a homerun as the clearcut favorite for the job? That's another new QB for Watson to figure out & yet another Watson mid-season offensive overhaul just waiting to happen. If Cody makes himself the favorite as early as this spring, there's no reason we can't have our offense in place in plenty of time for game time. Plus, I think the direction they are going with the offense is more intended for a Cody Green than Lee anyway.
  19. They seemed to pretty much be talking about the QB spot for spring ball and how Cody and Taylor have a chance to prove themselves with Lee out. Seeing as Carnes won't be here for Spring ball, no sense in even bringing him up. Plus, for anyone to expect Carnes to start as a true freshman is unrealistic. Would it be fun to watch if he was that impressive that he forces the coaching staff's hand? Yes. Would it be beneficial to the team to endure more inconsistent QB play? No (but there's no guarantee anyone else will do any better)
  20. You're right. It is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too early to predict crazy things like that. I can dream though, can't I? Scratch that. If I were actually dreaming we'd have a 4-year QB who wins the Heisman & takes us to the promised land. Crazy talk I know. No harm in dreaming. And yes, a stud QB to take hold of the offense and bring us to the next level would be a dream come true. That said, I don't think we need a star QB...just a good solid performer in crunch time.
  21. It's far too early to make predictions for 2011-2013 starting QBs. First off, Carnes and Turner have yet to step on campus, and Turner still has a ways to go before he can even officially be a Husker. It will be fun to watch it all unfold, but literally NOTHING would surprise me as far as the QB race goes.
  22. Are you kidding me. He might never not ever get here. Looking at our history of Recruit QBs changing there mind and going somewhere else. I think it a 50/50 chance he ends up here. Well... 1. He took two unofficial visits up to Lincoln this year for games. Unofficials are all on your own dime. 2. He went to the CCG ON THIS OWN DIME. 3. He drove FROM ARLINGTON, TEXAS TO SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA FOR THE HOLIDAY BOWL ON HIS OWN DIME!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4. We were his first offer. So no I am not kidding you. I THINK there is a GREAT chance he ends up in Lincoln. Have a nice day. Didn't you know his middle name is Gabbert...which pretty much means he's never stepping on campus at Nebraska
  23. From the tape I've seen on Carnes (which I'm assuming is the same as everyone else has seen), here's my impression: Carnes is definitely a pass-first guy (at least in their system), always keeping his eyes down field. You have to love that from a young QB, because so often you'll see a guy with athleticism rely on his legs far too much. Carnes really only ran when it was called for or as a last resort. He really impressed me with this aspect of his game. Moves in the pocket very well, good feet and a nice release. I also love the fact that he's used to being on a team where he acts as a point guard type of QB, just getting the ball to his playmakers. That will serve him well as he moves up. He's obviously a very talented runner too, so he can be a threat on the ground. A few things worry me about Carnes. #1 is academics...you never want to have a QB who struggles with getting a system down, and a lot of time grades can reflect on the players ability to master a system. #2 is the fact that a lot of the throws I've seen were pretty wobbly. If he wants to be a big time QB, he's got to get those spirals tightened up. Finally, I worry that a lot of his success could have come from relying heavily on his weapons on offense in HS. Yes I know I mentioned that I liked him being the point guard type, but he got away with a lot of throws he wouldn't get away with if it weren't for Sanders/Bundrage. Does he have a chance to start as a True Freshman? yes. Not very much of a chance, though. I think if we go to an Oregon-style offense, he's got a real good chance to be something special. He'll have his work cut out battling Green and Turner, though.
  24. I like both of these guys a lot. And i've got a fresh looking #17 jersey in my closet...basically I love our QB situation the next 6 years or so
