  1. You need to take a risk if you want to take the next step. I don't think it has to be AD career suicide though if the AD and fans both understand it needs to be a risk and that risk could fail. Big 'if', I know.
  2. I really like like this post. It's not that these recruiting rankings are bunk or highly inaccurate as much as we need to understand what they're doing. We sometimes see them as ubiquitous pools of talent or a straight rating of whose "better" (whatever that means). It's easier to think of them as baseball players ... this guy is a five tool guy, this one has 2 pitches and that one has 4 pitches. Sometimes that 2 pitch guy has 2 really good pitches, you just don't want him going through the order 3 times. The thing I'd add to this excellent post is the third criteria: the person. If you can find not just the right measurable a but the right person with those measurables, you have a big leg up. That's really hard to do with 17 and 18 year olds, though, and looks can be really deceiving. Sometimes that kid with the rap sheet is the one you're actually after.
  3. They're completing passes at 35%. It's 10 yards per attempt, good for #5 nationally.....but it's exactly the kind of situation you think it is.
  4. They absolutely could. It's not a good matchup for them though. Two common opponents between them (cin, mem) and the results are decidedly toward UCF in both. The game comes down to Navy getting stops. They don't win by very much, they beat you by generating tiny efficiency advantages. They don't get negative plays, they go for it on 4th quite a bit. The problem is UCF can sustain drives every bit as good but are several times more explosive. In yard per play differentials, Navy is +.4. UCF is +3.1. (For reference, Nebraska is -.3 and Purdue -.2). This is a massive difference. If Navy can't get stops, especially early, it's over. I think they can generate some big plays on offense as UCFs tackling has been shaky lately, but they can't out score UCF if they don't play very good defense.
  5. You have 200 teams trying to win in football now. You had a handful in the early 70s. Football was an amateur game in the 70s, it's corporations now. Even with all the differences, the data is similar, which should be surprising. Bobby Bowden, for example, goes 10-2 his second year at FSU. Schnellenberger, 9 wins his second year and third year at Miami, 11 and a title in his 5th. Switzer, 10-0-1 in year 1.
  6. NC in year 3, maybe a bit much. But if Frost came and he doesn't have the team back to an elite level by Year 3, I'd have serious questions to ask, because history is pretty clear that those first 2-3 years are very telling of what a coach will do. By the time we're where we are with Riley, we'd know the answer on if Frost was the guy or if we'd want to look elsewhere. I have as much belief he'll do well here as I did when UCF hired him, but you don't make the hire if you're not willing to fire. It was the same with Pelini for me. If the goal was to get past that plateau, I'd have fired him 2 years prior. If you have that really high expectation level, no use wasting time hoping you're going to get there, not in today's environment.
  7. Technically the thread has always been "on topic", only the initial post hasn't been about Frost. Personally, I think he'll use 1-800-ineedacoach. Be advised, lines may be busy in the southeastern United States.
  8. May be the early favorite for gold star of the week. Some big gambles there, but I really like Michigan vs Penn St. The betting line is dropping a fair bit. Michigan's defense is no joke, and Penn St relies a lot on Barkley. The flip side is Michigan has no offense to speak of. Dont like TCU vs KU, though. That's one dead bird.
  9. Only this staff would care. Every other staff would take advantage of the situation. Reporter asks the question, just give a little nod, talk about JD being awesome, know the trap is set. "Ooh, look, the other team is paying a lot of attention to JD today"......maniacal laugh Not ours: "Call plays to the outside receiver more, we must serve Lord Balance. All hail Balance"
  10. I'll take the one that out scores the other team. You can keep the clock.
  11. Please describe these alternative histories, in detail, especially those ones where Nebraska has more points, those are really nice.
  12. Intersting. Did you have any communication with Nebraska or any of the other programs about this? Was there any desire from any of these schools to build an institutional relation? That's a grab bag of schools there, so I'm a bit curious as to the ways different programs handled things.
  13. I was going to, but I was afraid they might believe me.
  14. You're not doing your due diligence if you're not at least covering the Keys.
  15. If you knew Frost as well as you pretend, and based on your posts I have serious doubts, you'd know he's not one to be strong armed into a decision.
  16. The defensive side of the ball, more than the offensive side, is filled with guys that weren't ideally sized for their position. Michigan has a LBer now that reminds me a lot of Lavonte David....that guy supposedly too small to play every down at the position. David is having a great NFL career, and this guy probably will to, because of high motor, high aggressive, smart play. Some guys you just can't keep off the field, even if they're too small or only have one hand. Hustle solves a lot of defensive issues.
  17. I'd play hard for anybody, but I'm the guy you kick out of a game of monopoly because I hate losing to random ass dice. Hypothetically speaking, of course.
  18. We say that because we know the result. If we gave up 8 TDs in a row blitzing, we'd blame it on the blitzing. If we're all truthful with ourselves, we know we wouldn't be more content, even a little bit, if we did things differently.
  19. I gotta disagree with you there, and here's an example. The entire video contains portions describing his decision making and such, but 3:58 begins a very specific sequence. It's a lot more detailed than Riley would give, but he's certainly putting an onus on the execution side of the equation. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HSqk9DqFIUU
