  1. I'm just curious to see how our members would consider themselves. Feel free to discuss your choice here. I have created this chart to illustrate the political spectrum: Personally, I am a right-leaning Libertarian (also called a New York Republican). Used to be a lot of us in NYC and the northeast. Now we hardly exist.
  2. Hahahaha! So true. When your world is limited by your legs, the stop-and-go of city pedestrian traffic, and public transportation, it can take forever to get anywhere. It isn't a problem though because nothing you would ever need is really more than a mile square from where you live - usually much, much less - unless it is the theatre district or something. For instance, I live in the West Village and my entire existence is between Houston and Union Square and from the Hudson to the Bowery (to explain it to you huskers, that is like 12 short-blocks N-S and 11 long-blocks E-W). I mean, sometimes I might venture out of that area if there is a very large compelling interest (Sporting event in NJ, Midtown at MSG, or Yankees in The Bronx, a Midtown club, or SoHo party).
  3. Also, I'm starting to plan a trip to all of these schools and it seems like it would be hell... 1) Fly to Iowa City (2 Flights) ~ 5.5 hours travel time 2) Drive from Iowa City to Lincoln ~4.8 hours 3) Drive from Lincoln to Columbia ~ 5 hours 4) Fly from Columbia to New York (2 Flights) ~ 5.5 hours travel time Total time in car, airport, or airplane: ~20 hours. Normally I love driving long distances and visiting new places, but that is when I am driving and usually accompanied by my friends. I once, on a school night at 11:30pm, spontaneously drove with my friend Tony more than two hours up to Albany to visit friends and then came back at 5am (Neither of us did really well in school...). But this is going to be with my father, who is a cantankerous old Yale man who has almost nothing in common with me. This is setting up too much like a Disney film for me to handle. So now I am off to see if there are small regional airlines (re: crop-dusters-for-hire) who will fly between Iowa City, Lincoln, and Columbia.
  4. Just checked out my account at the University of Iowa... I GOT ADMITTED! Unfortunately, I also checked my account at Ohio State and found out I got deferred. Oh well. So now I guess my three main choices are Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri. Still can't definitively rule one out. Can't wait to visit them all, which will be sometime this month hopefully.
  5. Still up at 0330. Have to get up for work at 0700. Training for college I guess.
  6. Thanks for the replies, everyone. Some other positives about UNL: It is the only school that I am looking at that receives a "Green Light" rating from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, which means it does not have any restrictive speech codes/policies that infringe on its students' free speech rights. That kind of thing is important to me. At Missouri, you can get in trouble for saying something offensive, as if people have a right to not be offended. They also have an anonymous reporting system where students can report other students who they think are offensive. All I think this PC/Speech Code bullsh#t does is inhibit the "marketplace of ideas" that college is supposed to be and make things even more backwards and less diverse by basically stating that the students are too weak to handle the freedom of free speech. I didn't enlist in the military to defend this nonsense, so I'm not going to accept it when I go to school. Also, I went to a Missouri forum (it was called tigerboard.com) and it is not very user friendly, or maybe I have some settings mixed up or something. The threads are in a weird cascading pattern and you can only view one reply at a time, so I'm not even going to bother registering. It looks very messy - like a rough draft outline of a paper or something. I like huskerboard a lot better.
  7. Canada is run by a Faggo-Nazi regime. Interesting. Never knew that. *Almost* as retarded as Mark Levin's "Islamo-Nazis".
  8. Don't buy a 9mm for home defense. The high velocity and small size of the bullet will make it go straight through unprotected targets, which could be dangerous in a small environment where there might be people/things you don't want to hit. Go with a larger and slower calibre like a .45 or .40 S&W... Actually I don't know if the .40 S&W is like that or not.
  9. Maybe it is just the media we are exposed to. Everyone on the East Coast hates the Midwest programs (perhaps a cultural element here...) and is all for the Big East basketball and PAC-10 football. Since the Northeast doesn't have any quality college football, the gigantic transplanted SoCal population here makes a lot of people PAC-10 fans, and since the national media is based in NY and LA, our media has more of a PAC-10 tie to it. All we ever hear is how much the Big Ten is an archaic failure of a conference when in reality they are just "average". I am not a Big Ten fan. At all. I am totally indifferent.
  10. Does anyone else think that the Big 12 is really up for grabs this season? I think Texas is not poised for as much dominance as last year with McCoy leaving (although their new rookie QB shows great promise) and Oklahoma is in a position to recover from last year, but Nebraska is also out for blood (emotionally) while other teams are sort of reorganizing at the moment. I think Texas A&M is going to be a big threat this year. I think a strong case could be made for the conference belonging to Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, or Texas A&M. Last year this was not really the case. Missouri also looks to get stronger in the coming two seasons, but not threateningly so. Should be an interesting season.
  11. I live in Manhattan. The good kind. A.K.A. New York County. Not the ridiculous K-State kind that I've heard of recently.
  12. 242 This game alone is a compelling enough interest for me to go to UNL in the fall... Is that bad?
  13. The Big 10 usually has the worst match-ups in bowl games because they usually have their 3,4,5 matched up with another conference's 2,3,4. This year, OSU was an underdog to Oregon (both critically and in the rankings), Northwestern was an underdog to Auburn (although played very close), MSU was an underdog to Texas Tech, and Penn State was an underdog to LSU. Those aren't very favorable. Wisconsin @ Miami was even. ISU beat Minnesota. Also, the Big 10, similar to most Big 12 and Big East teams, always plays their big games in enemy territory. Big 10 isn't overrated in the slightest bit. Everyone thinks they suck, and it was only until the bowl results came out that some sportswriters gave them credit. They are on the way up though, 2010 should be a better season for the Big 10. Ohio State has lost two National Championships in a row, both to SEC teams. The buzz is that the best of the Big 10 is just antiquated and boring football and cannot compare to the SEC.
  14. What's the dating scene like at UNL? Is it mostly random flings/one-night-hookups or is there a legit dating scene at the university?
  15. The media is biased towards the Big Ten? Maybe only slightly so after the bowl games, but before that, the media has hated the Big Ten. Everyone picked Oregon over Ohio State. ESPN had this shtick about the Big Ten being slow, boring, conventional football that couldn't compete with the SEC or PAC-10 all year. I don't have any stake in the Big Ten, I'm just saying that our media has a hard-on for the SEC and to a lesser extent, the PAC-10. The Big Ten is always under the boot of the media.
  16. I wish you and your family the best. It is always scary when young children become sick. Hope she will have a speedy recovery.
  17. I actually applied to Penn State and Ohio State, but I really want to go out further west. Not entirely sure if I could get into them either. Penn State is also in the middle of nowhere and frankly too close to NY geographically. They do have one of the best meteorology programs (along with Oklahoma), but I don't think a slightly better program is enough of a compelling interest on its own for me to chose Penn State over another school. My grandfather also went to Ohio State and they have good football and Columbus is a really cool town, but I'm not certain I could get into Ohio State either. Still waiting to hear from these two schools (should be any day now).
  18. A lesbian trapped in a man's body? I've heard of those.
  19. Correct, but the major is titled: "Soil, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences B.S. Degree with an Emphasis in Atmospheric Sciences" (A mouthful...) Among the courses required by this major are: Soils 2100 - Introduction to Soil Science (3 cr) FW or Soils 3290 - Soils and the Environment (3 cr) F I'm not saying it is a huge turnoff, but I think it is unusual considering no other school's meteorology/atmospheric sciences program has soil sciences included. It is more appealing to see a school like KU that titles their degree "Atmospheric Sciences" and has areas of emphasis within the degree, instead of having the meteorology degree buried in another degree, like at MU. It gives the impression that the program at KU is better quality in this area. Of course, I could be totally wrong, but do you understand my reasoning?
  20. SkerChicago, I actually checked out KU after reading your post and I think I'll apply there. They have a good atmospheric science degree that isn't oddly combined with something else (like Missouri's "soil and atmospheric sciences" degree ) and have a wide array of emphases within that degree, so it looks like they take the program seriously. In terms of applications, they also have a 48-hour approval process when you have all of your materials in, which is pretty cool. At some point I am going to have to take off work and go visit all of these schools.

  22. Hey folks, I'm from New York, currently living in the West Village out of a friend's apartment. I graduated high school last year and enlisted in the Marine Corps, but I got medically discharged from boot camp after two months, so now I've been back in the civilian world working at a market research agency, which is a pretty good gig. I figured I needed to go to school next fall, and so I applied to a variety of schools in the Midwest and Great Plains area. I meet a lot of people in NYC who aren't from here - a lot of college students at NYU - and a lot of them say that they loved their home state of [insert non-Northeastern state], but always wanted to spend some time in New York City to see what it was like and then go back home; which is college for them. I decided that I would like to do the same thing in reverse. I'm very much a city person, but I would really like to spend time out in the Heartland of this country. A long story slightly less long, I got accepted into Nebraska and Missouri and I'm waiting to hear from Iowa. At the moment I am leaning towards Nebraska. Thinking of majoring in Meteorology at Nebraska because it is something I am interested in and it is very marketable to the Navy if I chose to return to the military. Actually, I'll put this in list form so it is slightly less painful to read through: REASONS WHY I WOULD LIKE TO GO TO NEBRASKA 1) Solid academic reputation, good facilities, renowned research 2) Has the major I want (meteorology) in a very interesting part of the country for this area of study. Storm chase team much? 3) Football. I am a very big football fan, and I watched the Big 12 Championship and thought that Nebraska put up one tough fight. Also Nebraska allegedly has great fans with a reputation for being very friendly and passionate about the sport. We'll, see, won't we? REASONS THAT MAKE ME THINK TWICE 1) I hear the school's administration is very strict compared to other state schools and the students are treated like children (common theme on review sites). 2) Extremely homogeneous population... Will I fit in? I think I'm an outgoing, interesting, and personable person. I founded my high school Rugby Team. But will the New Yorker be too different from Nebraskans? I'm Jewish, are most students hyper-religious (Christian) zealots or is this East Coast propaganda? I'm not terribly religious, by the way. 3) Lincoln, NE does not strike me a good college town as compared to Columbia, MO or Iowa City, IA. I would just like to hear some of your opinions on my opinions and whether they are completely unfounded or if some points have merit to them. This seems like a great forum you folks have here (I smiled when I saw there is a whole separate forum for meals & recipes!) and I look forward to chatting about football and other things. Respect, Manhattan
